I was privileged to attend a Shtokolov performance in 1980. There was something utterly colossal about him. His voice, his soul, his pathos, that intangible the Spanish call "duende"...
People say that if you want to understand a voice , you should hear it without any accompaniment ...i remembered those wise words now , after having listened to this marvellous singing ....
If there's a better example of a voice that can encompass and define a people and the land they come from, I've yet to hear it. This is a most hauntingly beautiful work that speaks directly to the soul. Simply amazing!
WoW!If there was ever a better basso profondo than this man,I don't know who it would be.I understand no Russian whatsoever, but Shtokolov's beautifully resonant timbre and wonderful phrasing goes straight to your heart. What an absolute shame he was almost unknown to westerners.Che peccato! Bravissimo Shtokolov!
This song, made a cappella, by our beloved Boris, sounds like the very voice of the russian land itself! He feels every word he sings, making them alive! Great artists like him should live forever! His death is a neverending loss for the entire world...

4 minutes of fantastic, resonating, sensitive, "a capella" singing. Did not waver from the key. Bravo! (Thanks CFS)
