Ok, I am actually crying here. No joke! And I'm a woman. Yeah, sure it's quite disgusting, but you gotta look at it from the comedy side. Oh Simon, you're too precious! Hahahahahaha love Dawn's reaction too!
I think that was one of the most hilarious stories!! It is totally natural - sharks have to eat and this is just a natural survival method that has been deviated. Imagine the poor sharks who think they are about to eat and then hoisted into the air - punctured in the mouth/gums with a hook. For me it is even better because it is a true story and informs on the nature of sharks!
@TomKennyIsLovely She was having "rather a heavy period" is a line from the Monty Python movie The Meaning of Life. Some characters leave a show (I think after the penis song) and a female actress excuses their leaving early by saying that. The next line said by the actress was, "and I don't want to start bleeding all over the seats!" Very gross, and in the context of the movie very funny.
Thing of it is though, I can see why the audience might not go for it. It is funny but only because we trust that it is an actual story. In a stand up situation, if you think the comedian is making it up for a laugh, then in this case it could come off as a bit misogynistic and just making up a story to ridicule someone having a period. This interview is a much more open and genuine setting for that story to work.
His joke is not at women's expense. It's at his own expense. He's mocking himself and his ignorance. He's describing an absurd situation and his own willingness to believe that he's an ice fisherman and that boats might have automatic chum pumps! It's a put down of his own ego. I can see how you might feel that a man talking about a woman suffering a heavy period could be bit insesitive. But sexist? Dawns laughing, even as she cautions him on his insensitivity... which he admits.
You can see how it's funny and you can see how it's disgusting/sexist, but I can understand it from either side. I'm unoffended by Simon 'cause I love him. :-)
That's ok, you're clearly a decent person :-) This might be tricky to explain but, here goes: The reason his joke is kind of sexist is because it's at women's expense, by exaggerating their periods. See what I mean? I wasn't offended by the joke, and I'm not a feminist, I just looked at it from a few point points at once.
If anything I think it's the opposite. It tries to normalise the fact that half the population bleeds regularly, even if it's exaggerated for effect ;)
It's the responses Simon Pegg says he gets to that joke that I think are sexist.
Almost any other subject is fine for comedy, but as soon as you mention periods everyone suddenly turns into a prude.
You don't need to worry about being a feminist, it's a good thing. Favouring one gender is where it goes off the rails.
I didn't mean for it to sound like that, I just said in the last post that I wasn't and you said that I was: I was just correcting you, that's all. :-)
"Effectively chumming the water" Haha, thats hilarious! Im shocked this never got a good laugh, since it made me piss myself! No human bodily function should be safe from comedy, and I think those uptight people (esp women) who disagreed are feckin hypocrites!

Are you drunk?

@tainteddeity
I never drink, and I don't see the point in explaining. I'm not saying Simon's sexist though, 'cause he isn't. I'm a big fan of his.
EllenRebecca3 2 years ago
No no, I'd like an explanation as to how this joke might be seen as sexist because i honestly can't see it myself.
I might have been a tad harsh in the first comment, what is it?
