Reminds me of Boh3m3. I am sure you don't remember when we chatted when you have your first big break on YouTube. I worry about you and others who found unexpected success but did not have advisors and support to handle the likelihood that it would not last and where to go with it. I have not watched any of your videos on a long time but I really enjoyed seeing the old Bryony again. More than 1 1/2 years had passed since you posted this and I hope you are well.
This is the you that I fell in love with watching. Tbh haven't even regularly gone on YouTube for years, for reasons similar to those you described, ie the business / commercial aspect of it. It seems to prohibit creative freedom, eliminates the fun and carefree nature, seems far less real and true, etc. Wishing you all the best from a not very dedicated but long time follower
Back in the day, I subscribed to Paperlilies because it reminded me of myself. I could tell that you were just a normal person living out your life and just having a lot of fun. I miss the old Paperlilies and your Sarcasticy Wittiness.

Hi! I love your videos. I am new to this channel but I think this is great.(I only knew of papperlilies) We all watch you because your amazing. I am loving these truthful rants. I know u want to stay away for awhile but please update us soon!!!!
I watch your videos and love them. I find you interesting and wish that I could be a bit more like you (creative, a thinker, not stuck in a traditional work situation all the time)... I feel like I'm so restricted all the time. Well cheer up!!!
Oh and you def should go red, that was my favorite video from way back in the golden years and it suited you. It actually inspired me to dye my hair red (I was in need of a life change so dying my hair sufficed)
I think you should show us more of your figure. may be in you next blog, you could sit there wearing only some pink underwear. and maybe dance around a bit.
thats what I call entertainment baby. You'll definitely gain more viewers.
Hey Bryony, take care of yourself. I know the feeling of setting yourself up for something great to accomplish lots of things and then feeling as thought you are just coming out with nothing. I think you can at least take away some of the great experiences you had and connections you made! Hopefully this year will be more successful and productive to you. Good luck!
Another idea! You can also make some page, it's should be easy for you. We can help you if you want. And make some money on it. Like GoogleAds & stuff like this. You have to just find out some interested body!
I watched the hole video and it definitly wasn't waste of my time. So don't thanks for watching this ;d Imho maybe you should look for some 'normal' job. If you're not more intresting in youtube stuff, just leave it. Try somethig new. This year gives you a lot of experience. You have to choose. You wanna continue what are you doing or not!
P.S.
Choose definitly red/orange colour like about three years ago! I'm a guy so i don't discern colors. You've been so appealing!
I think I understand your dilemma about being yourself on your main channel. I think it's a good idea to think about why you started and why you like youtube. I think that it's also important to know that most of your subscribers watch because we like you and your videos, not because you're popular.

If you have to find a regular job to survive, it's not the end of the world. You've done it before, you can do it again. Better than starving or moving back with the parents, I bet!
definitly do the red hair thing. don't wait around for things to happen be more proactive. you have thousands of people that listen to you no offence just talk. you pretty much have like a virtual army read about some stuff going on in the world. start a charity or a orphanage or shelter or food for Ethiopia lol or something that will make you not think that you wasted another year. you were one of the first ppl i subscribed to and still listining to your point of view thats my point of view :)
i guess the question is, did you enjoy 2009? It doesn't really matter where it "got you"... tons of folks living in LA trying to "make it big" as actors go through a similar experience. at some point, they either "make it" or they have to change career paths entirely. so you go for it and you try something risky, and if you hated it, well, then be glad it was only 1 year. if you enjoyed it, then it shouldn't really matter where it brought you. you tried something, you entertained us. Thanks!
When so many of us subscribed long ago, it was cause of her wonderful sarcastic wit. She still has that, but too many of the videos are "updates" about a movie most wont see, or how she went to such and such an awards show that nobody would be able to see and cant relate. Wish she'd go back to mocking redneck stars and world events. Let others be a "commercial" for youtube. There are enough ads on the site as is. Old school paperlilies is great! Hope to see it again soon.
Sitting on your ass waiting for "something" to come along was stagnation, and as a gamer you know that stagnation is death! Since you started IZM, your rate of video production and subscriber growth has slowed. Since the economy is in the shitter, it would seem that building some inertia in youtube videos would be the safe bet.
and yes. It seems like partners are influenced away from some video making because of monetization while non-partners are holding back on more time consuming videos until after they can get some compensation for their time.
You did what you wanted to do; therefore, you aren't a failure. You are famous because of your personality and creativity... not to mention you got to do awesome things because of that with the premieres and such. I think most people would be proud of that. I vote for the red hair! I hate having to pay to get my roots done all the time too. :)
You don't even have to try and your videos are still awesome. Just the way you talk and the things you talk about are entertaining. You are wicked awesome Bryony! ;D
Your vlogs were actually the first that I ever watched, and were what opened the door to me finding so many other great channels out there. Without Paperlillies, YouTube would have been nothing but Fred and bad late night tv clips, funniest home videos and of that god awful crap XD Stay strong! Stay inspired! We love you.
I've missed your vlogs, a lot. I really got into youtube through vlogs, and now popular people seem afraid to do what made them liked in the first place.
I think you made more videos back then as well, when you weren't focusing on "in the moment" comedy sketches. You were involved in youtube as more of a community aspect.
I wish you the best this coming year, and really hope you use this channel to start talking to people again. Sorry about your tax bill. I've got taxes coming up myself.
oh man i liked this video. bring back the old vlogs fosho. also, if it makes you feel any better (i don't know) i've always found you to be endearing because you're honest about feeling hopeless or failing. ever since you first started vlogging its been a struggle with having different jobs, looking for jobs, battling haters, etc. (PS you should make more art videos in which you show your recent stuff)
I was looking at your past vids like from 3 years ago.
Id love to hear your thoughts about what you think about America now that you've been here without you parents and how your preconceived ideas matched or didn't match up.
and i know exactly what you mean. a similar thing has happened to me (not on the same scale, obviously), but it's weird. i don't know how to explain it.
I know that feeling of hiatus. Me, I spent the last two years at uni - a different course each year - lacked motivation, failed, and left. Now I'm in a ton of debt and I'm unsure of where to go, though I'm strongly considering doing a foundation degree in Media at college. But yeah, point is, I know the feeling of sort of hopelessness.
I would like to see more blogs. I need you to say lots of words (because you actually use proper English), so I can improve my Texas dialect. I like brunets, however if you like blond... its your hair.
Yaay shoutouts for meee. Also, thank you for reminding me to do my taxes. Also, you're probably being a little to tough on yourself. Also, it amused me the way you annoyed yourself at the end.
Cheer up, Bryony! What you're going through is called "growing up" - I bet you thought you already had - well, some people never do, so you're showing all the right signs! Good luck, I'll be watching to see how you do.
hey bryony, you should post more videos on this channel... just talk.. you don't have to worry about being creative.. don't delete anything... i like hearing what you have to say regardless what it's about.. even if you don't think it's interesting.. i think you have a large enough following that, on the whole, people will think it is interesting
Ugh, please don't go ginger! I think that brunette suits you the best. Blonde is fine when you are playing characters, but it doesnt really seem like you to me.
what has become of youtube and youtubers is actually quiet sad. i used w love ur videos and u were the reason i started watching youtube. k80blog is one of the few ones who stayed real and in a way I feel sad that my film is actually giving youtube a good name! none of the people on here r what they were when we were filming
@filmester I agree. YouTube had every opportunity to listen and they didn't. They're the reason we all changed...it was made most clear when the "community" actually had an advocacy panel in direct contact with YouTube, and they found they really couldn't get YouTube to pay attention to the notion of community. Too small a concept to be worth money apparently. So many of us felt either alieneted or a sense of forced assimilation.
absolutely! all what became of YouTube is another version of television...only this time the people who actually have som following and power are uneducated and unprofessional children
Was it a fun year, that's what counts. I do envy you earning enough money to owe a grand in tax for, as you put it, sitting on your ass. I love your xPLx videos just as much as Paperlillies. Pity you don't do more of them.
I miss the golden days of youtube. I used to troll through those videos like there was no tomorrow. and bryony...you've been a favorite since the beginning. 2010 seems so far from the epic days of 2007....sigh. Cant we go back?
Hey! I'm one of your new viewers, I recently subscribed to both of your channels. So, basically I've loads of videos to watch. I've watched a whole bunch of your videos and I think you're such an interesting person. You seem so friendly and sweet, and I just love people like that. I appreciate your honesty in this video. As long as you always follow your heart, you'll be happy (:
i love the honesty of this video. i've been subscribed to you since the early days and i miss the old days - few people make videos like this anymore. i think you should put vlogs on your paperlilies channel. people would love them - you have great charisma, you're really clever, you make people laugh, and people relate to you, especially when you are just talking about your day. shame the bafta thing didn't help, but you were maybe a bit ahead of your time for bafta - just wait!
don't stress out , get a beeping job ,,, ,for beep sake , beep me come on i mean beep , ,, forget about paying that beep'n beep tony blair pension ,, you money is going to help poor kinds get there teef fixed ,,, : )
i love your videos. but i guess in terms of income you could always start doing daily vlogs as well? haha i mean so many people are making a living off of it. but its not a safe career...as it could be gone any second. so I dont know... but best of luck to you!
I think one of the harder things about being a creative person is that you write your own job description. Your struggle to figure out which balance of activities results in the best cash flow seems to me to be the same thing creative people have been dealing with for years. And just like those before you, you'll figure out what balance works best as you try out different things. So, I definitely wouldn't call the past year a failure for you. It was just one step towards a great future. :)
You were one of my first youtube subscriptions and the reason I subscribed in the first place was that you done your own thing... it wasn't a scripted 'Paperlilies Inc' show.
I remember when you'd make a couple of videos in a day on anything! Whatever was in your head. You'd talk for 10 minutes about Sandy Thom, not being able to buy expensive design software, trying to get work, stuff you were interested in... your collections, etc.
Even this vlog is interesting & refreshing! Keep it up!
i like the old skool vlogs! and the youtube experience is such a strange phenomenon - very few people would understand it if you tried to explain.
*these may/may not be the views of BenLoka Corp. We take no responsibility for any humour, sincerity or reality that may exist in this comment subconsciously or otherwise. Shop at Tesco.*
Just yesterday, cleaning up my computer, I came across myself singing Bohemian Rhapsody for a certain collab - well, you've done stranger things in that mercurial YouTube career of yours! I guess if you occasionally saw something through... you would be yet another boring streamlined YT celebrity. We all know in our heart of hearts that nothing beats a good old-fashioned vlog, full of crappy attitudes and with no end to it! But who can afford to make them anymore?
I'm sorry for the way stuff worked out, but you seem like you've come out the other side having gained more perspective, or something. Life lessons maybe? I don't know.
It was great to hear someone talk honestly though. I feel like everyone's so crazy about trying to appear together and on top of everything, even to their closest friends, and it's good to hear real things that I can relate to.
i loveee your videos. you're one of my favorite youtubers. i cant just listen to anyone sit and talk about stuff, but you're great. you're relatable. so yay! and i think you should just post stuff you want to on your channel and ppl WILL like it!
I think what you're feeling is a normal reaction to not having a 9-5 job, yet not having lottery win style income. I've spent the past two years in a similar situation & sometimes feel the same way (and have the same tax issues!)
With the main channel, remember that most of us signed on because we saw someone who seems nice, doing normal things, rather than 'The Paperlilies Show'. If you do 9 vlogs & 1 comedy piece that's fine with us. From a commercial POV, your sub base should make it OK.
i dont know anything about taxes, im 18.. blah blah blah but i thought they deduct tax before it goes into your bank account. the only reason i can think of why you need to pay this huge sum of money is cause you do freelance? idk...
This video was really nice and relaxing to watch, thank you :) It's like your old Vlogs (not to say I don't like your current videos!), personal and the great honest person we can relate to. :D
I like your vlogs, PL. I do understand, however, that you are torn between doing those videos and doing ones that get more viewers. So could you alternate? Do a commercial video on your "Paperlilies" channel, then do a personal video on your "xPLx" channel, then do another commercial "Paperlilies" one, then do another personal "xPLx" one and so on.
see i like these just as much or maybe even better than your comedy/character videos (which are great!) but i miss your vlogs a lot! your personality alone makes your videos great(L)
Reality rocks! Thanks for the honesty. Nice to watch someone and feel like you can relate! We love you....you just gotta get your groove back whether its YouTube or wherever!! You can do it!!! Great video! xoxox
You worry way too much about what's on your channel. We like you whether you're vlogging or being silly. You fretting about it, is what's killing it. Go have some fun. Film dust motes floating through the air, give them names and make fun of them for being fat.
I'm looking at your videos since a long time now... this all youtube affair is a strange sort of trap : but there is just one way out, and i believe you know it : just be the most sincere that you can. That's what you allways are, i guess. Mostly ! That's a lot ! Thank you Bry.
The Hair : any colour will be ok, if you like it !
I remember the days when you were making lots of videos and you had lots of fun, and I hope you have the inclination of bringing a little of that back because I miss it. I remember how big a downer it was when commercialism and nasty commenters made you stop reading comments and interacting. But I do remember how delicious that sandwich was. Remember? Oh I know you do. It was a terrific sandwich.
It's really encouraging that the desire for real interaction on here is coming back to you, and I wish you lots of luck in your offline job opportunities. You DO have a good resume as far as content creation both video and design, and your creative sense is evident. I like the character videos you make and obviously I'm not alone. Good luck, keep smiling, and don't let the bastards get you down! :o)
I like these "normal and boring" vlogs with you just pontificating, stream of consciouness style. Try setting aside bits of cash as you go through this year for next years bill? Alternatively do a Shane Dawson and grab easy views with annoying Video Thumbnails. You could play Shaneeze Drewson, a "classy" bird from the North-East or the East-end. Definately do another Cheryl Cole video anyway! *Big Hugzz for Paperlillies*
Much Love Bry <3 hopefully things will look up. You can still make YT a career, it just needs work. Personally, i dont go seeking subs or partnership because I want my channel to be what I want it to be and no influenced by commercialism. Do what you love on YT, and you will be happy. Remember, people subscribed to you when you were doing those videos that you loved. Im sure if you went back to doing them, they would stick around and watch. In the words of bastion "be confident atrayu"
Your hair looks good now, but your normal hair color is fine as well, red does not suit you. Where can we watch the Zombie movie? The economy sucks so good luck with your career pursuits. Wouldn't it be ironic if YouTube became your meager, but sole source of livelyhood. That is how life works, so be prepared for it. Why isn't an attractive talented young woman like yourself married yet, are you dating the right men? Don't be shy. How about a London economic update.
The videos like Sarcasm girl and Miss East Carolina were the ones that got me watching your channel... but the vlogs like this are what kept me around.
Blonde does suit you. Please keep making videos no matter how "boring" other people may find them. Some of my most favorite videos from you were just blogs or times when you were showing us around your old room or when you were painting something. Please keep making videos and video blogs, we will watch no matter what.
i do miss vlog videos, just in general. i think there can be a good balance between entertainment and plain vlogging. both are interesting. and if youre thinking of an easy colour to maintain.. you should stick with something close to your natural colour - just my opinion.
I don't know how I'm subbed to you because I never heard of paperlilies (although I just checked it out). But this was a good vlog, and maybe you can use the basic premise for a comedy piece - the pitfalls of commercial success - You do the character-actor stuff well so why not a Hollywood Downfall tragedy.
I now this comment was useless but I'm trying to be supportive - not my forte. ; D
Good Luck with the bills - and remember: They don't own you.
I like all the random videos you have! The whole reason I like watching you is because EVERY video is not some thought-out "haha" video. I like how you make video blogs about stuff like this, and talking about whatever and being 'real' and then you post your hilarious comedy videos. What may be boring for you to talk about is generally interesting for us haha. Don't turn into all the other stupid youtubers who upload nothing but super fancy comedy videos.
You could talk about mundane stuff and I would still watch it. Or you could ask a comment question of the day and pretend you care about what people think to get more comments :)
you were one of the first youtubers i ever subscribed to back when i only followed about 5 people on the site. But nowadays i am sub'd to about 60 people - most of which have a weekly schedule and so we always know they will have a new video out. I believe that if you could promise to make a video every couple of weeks that you really could make a living out of youtube - once you hit the front page all these people who are newish to the site will find out about you. good luck =)
Hey, I had a huge tax debt once too. In Australia they let me make a payment arrangement. I'm sure her majesty's civil servants can arrange something like that for you. :-P Your year wasn't a waste for me. I enjoyed your videos (and your art). What constitutes "professional advancement" anyway?
A lot of YouTubers now depend on their partner status for income, and that's definitely hard to maintain (except if you're like Buck, covering weekly events). If you've found a way to make money on YouTube, more power to you. I started watching you for your vlogs and crafts videos, but I don't mind the comedy stuff if that's going to get you views. You could still pursue that for side money, but I think it's risky as a main job.
Oh and I hate you for being able to pull off all hair colours. :p
Also.. your channel was the first one I really watched. And you inspired me to make some videos as well (even though they suck). Also, I admire the courage you have to put everything on Youtube.
Anything you talk about is interesting. You talking about what you're thinking or what happened throughout your day is worth watching in my opinion. Love ALL you're videos! ; D
There's something that inevitably seems to change once a channel is monetized - exactly what you described about it becoming almost like a business where you no longer feel comfortable posting whatever you want even though its your own channel. The interaction between video-maker and viewers also seems to become more one-way after a while.
It was largely K80blog's channel that helped solidify my decision to not join the partner program when I was sent an offer. Her channel is creative freedom :)
I couldn't agree more. Paperlilies was one of my first subscriptions, and therefore my gateway into the whole YouTube experience, which has seen me travel to places across the world just to see fellow YTers, including of course TheRavenOfPoe.
I think it would be easy to miss what an amazingly positive influence Bryony has had on our lives. I think many of us can trace very good things back to some random English girl talking to a camera in her bedroom.
I miss the real you, the xplx one, the paperliliesart one, these are the videos I am always waiting for coming from you, the ones that actually show you, I hope you will just keep posting that which you feel like posting, it's the way I do it and it's what I like seeing the most, the 'real' people, you always were one of my favourites, thank goodness for your xplx channel...stay real
I find the youtube community has decreased in my eyes. I find all the big one on youtube or people who I use to love barely make video an i wish they came back. it angers me a bit if I had 10 000+ subz I would be more active :) so thank you for coming back :) and giving it a chance :) I appreciate it :)
Reminds me of Boh3m3. I am sure you don't remember when we chatted when you have your first big break on YouTube. You are famous because of your personality and creativity... not to mention you got to do awesome things because of that with the premieres and such. I think most people would be proud of that. I vote for the red hair! I hate having to pay to get my roots done all the time too. :)

I know that feeling of hiatus. Me, I spent the last two years at uni - a different course each year - lacked motivation, failed, and left. Now I'm in a ton of debt and I'm unsure of where to go, though I'm strongly considering doing a foundation degree in Media at college. But yeah, point is, I know the feeling of sort of hopelessness.

what has become of youtube and youtubers is actually quiet sad. i used w love ur videos and u were the reason i started watching youtube. k80blog is one of the few ones who stayed real and in a way I feel sad that my film is actually giving youtube a good name! none of the people on here r what they were when we were filming
filmester 2 years ago
@filmester I agree. YouTube had every opportunity to listen and they didn't. They're the reason we all changed...it was made most clear when the "community" actually had an advocacy panel in direct contact with YouTube, and they found they really couldn't get YouTube to pay attention to the notion of community. Too small a concept to be worth money apparently. So many of us felt either alieneted or a sense of forced assimilation.
P00P0STER0US 2 years ago
absolutely! all what became of YouTube is another version of television...only this time the people who actually have som following and power are uneducated and unprofessional children

i love the honesty of this video. i've been subscribed to you since the early days and i miss the old days - few people make videos like this anymore. i think you should put vlogs on your paperlilies channel. people would love them - you have great charisma, you're really clever, you make people laugh, and people relate to you, especially when you are just talking about your day. shame the bafta thing didn't help, but you were maybe a bit ahead of your time for bafta - just wait!

bbloodyangel1 2 years ago

Keep it up!

Glassorchids 2 years ago
I'm sorry for the way stuff worked out, but you seem like you've come out the other side having gained more perspective, or something. Life lessons maybe? I don't know.
It was great to hear someone talk honestly though. I feel like everyone's so crazy about trying to appear together and on top of everything, even to their closest friends, and it's good to hear real things that I can relate to.
I'm convinced you'll sort it all out :) x

i loveee your videos. you're one of my favorite youtubers. i cant just listen to anyone sit and talk about stuff, but you're great. you're relatable. so yay! and i think you should just post stuff you want to on your channel and ppl WILL like it!
JillStrif 2 years ago
I think what you're feeling is a normal reaction to not having a 9-5 job, yet not having lottery win style income. I've spent the past two years in a similar situation & sometimes feel the same way (and have the same tax issues!)
With the main channel, remember that most of us signed on because we saw someone who seems nice, doing normal things, rather than 'The Paperlilies Show'. If you do 9 vlogs & 1 comedy piece that's fine with us. From a commercial POV, your sub base should make it OK.
zebidee55 2 years ago

I like your vlogs, PL. I do understand, however, that you are torn between doing those videos and doing ones that get more viewers. So could you alternate? Do a commercial video on your "Paperlilies" channel, then do a personal video on your "xPLx" channel, then do another commercial "Paperlilies" one, then do another personal "xPLx" one and so on.

It was a terrific sandwich.
poopslingingmonkey 2 years ago

*Big Hugzz for Paperlillies*
plica06 2 years ago
Much Love Bry <3 hopefully things will look up. You can still make YT a career, it just needs work. Personally, i dont go seeking subs or partnership because I want my channel to be what I want it to be and no influenced by commercialism. Do what you love on YT, and you will be happy. Remember, people subscribed to you when you were doing those videos that you loved. Im sure if you went back to doing them, they would stick around and watch.

I now this comment was useless but I'm trying to be supportive - not my forte. ; D

But nowadays i am sub'd to about 60 people - most of which have a weekly schedule and so we always know they will have a new video out. secretsareboring 2 years ago

shearin18 2 years ago 2
There's something that inevitably seems to change once a channel is monetized - exactly what you described about it becoming almost like a business where you no longer feel comfortable posting whatever you want even though its your own channel. The interaction between video-maker and viewers also seems to become more one-way after a while.
It was largely K80blog's channel that helped solidify my decision to not join the partner program when I was sent an offer. Her channel is creative freedom :)
