@parmesancrisp yeah, i kind of got that feeling too in some other jimmy carl black interview. Maybe he never got over being replaced by 5 out of the 10 greatest drummers of all time
you cant watch fuck all on here without a part being missing i had to skip part 3 because it's not there every time either that or on one video the sound is missing what a joke youtube is
@wipers86 You can find part 3, but some damned company owns one of the songs on it (or thinks it does) and prevents anyone else from uploading it to youtube. So this person who posted the documentary had to block out that section of the audio. It's only a minute or two.
Sounds horrible? What? It sounded Supr lovely frm the 1st note I heard!! But the my first album where the Spotlight Kid Album. Pretty groovie album that to.
What WMG seems not to know is that when people watch and LISTEN to these documentaries, they might be interested enough to go out and BUY a Captain Beefheart CD!
Man, Matt Groening's description of his experiences "getting into" Trout Mask Replica is TOTALLY like my own...RIP Don...hit that long lunar note and let it float
'Like covering the cymbals and the drums with cardboard, and overdubbing his vocals with no earphones, hearing only vague leakage through the studio window rendering him only slightly in sync with the actual track that he's singing on. That's the way he wanted it ...'
Frank Zappa makes a comment at 2:50 that if Beefheart had ever been paired up with a famous producer there "could have been a number of suicides." He worked with Ted Templeman, who produced "Clear Spot" in 1972.
What Matt Greoning (didn't expect him to like Captain Beefheart) is completly the same to how I got ito him
I was on our Itunes, looking through the collection when I saw captian beefheart, played trou mask replica and called it "A piss stain on the music industry"
Then I got into zappa and now i've got all the captain beefheart albums on my wish list
Dude, I was just going to type that - about the suicides comment. And how he keeps a rather straight face after saying it! I think he really meant it! But, in Drumbo's (john french) new book, apparently he goes right into the details of the recording of Trout Mask, and how Beefheart would psychologically break the band members down, until they were completely obedient to him - sleeping for 2 to 3 hours, eating nothing but beans and hotdogs, and practicing 12 hours a day! Madness
I remember seeing him in Berkeley a outstanding concert...like the crowd was noisy and he shouted at them "You've had to much to think" always remember that ha great gig
I forgot all about the Residents. I always wanted to check them out when they were active before the internet existed which meant taking a gamble and buying their album and I was poor back then. Gonna look them up now.
Love Frank's comment "I think that if he had been produced by any professional, famous producer that there could of been a number of suicides involved." LMAO! And what Matt said seems to be so true--Troutmask on first listen can be hard to take. But when you listen to it a number of times you really get to understand the shear complexity, the extraordinary musicianship to pull something like that off--it's legendary. It's an American masterpiece of creativity,my opinion. John French=genius also!
It's also a record that keeps on giving. I first hear it about 12 years ago and have listened to it many many times since, and I'm still finding new things in there!
@Hvitiris I think that's the main reason why I, like matt groening, consider it to be the greatest recording of all time. more than any other album I've ever heard, you can replay this and replay this and it never gets old. My other favorites, Pet Sounds and Sgt Pepper's, are the same way-- but not to the same extent.
At 2:58 Frank says that if the Captain had used a major producer for Trout Mask - there could have been a number of suicides involved! And he wasn't kidding!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Matt basically brainwashed himself into loving an album with Frank Zappa's name on it. He taught himself to appreciate the Emperor's New Album? LOL. Probably.
I've got a better idea, why don't you go do something creative to yourself with a dildo. I'm fairly certain it's the only action you'll be getting. You can listen to Trout Mask Replica all through it if it'll make it all nice for you. Just do the neighbors a favor and wear your headphones. Thanks.
The 1st time I listened to "Trout Mask Replica" (a little less than a year ago) I was stunned. I really didn't know how to approach it or understand what I was hearing.....so I didn't listen to it for a while. Then, out of nowhere I felt like giving it another shot and boy...did it amaze the hell out of me. It gets better with every listen.

I used to be friends with these guys who WORSHIPED the Grateful Dead and had a band. So one day, I go over there, and one of the guys says, "Hey Crazy Neil, You'll like THIS>" And he reaches behind the couch, and grabs this loose LP record that is lying against the wall, full of dust. And it was one disc from Trout Mask Replica, the one with Pachucco Cadaver. Maybe the most important record anybody has ever given me.
I was just like Matt Groening - I bought Trout Mask even tho it was expensive, took it home played it, thought it was crap. Played it again, played it again, and again. In the end I thought it was the best album I'd ever owned, and I played nothing else. Avaunt garde genius.
