Hey,
During the 1990's i was stationed at the Air Force Geophysics laboratory at Hanscom AFB. They had a group called the space experiments division which used high altitude (or space balloons) for atmospheric research. We launched many of these from new mexico, and they generally would float towards texas... When the experiement was over we would detonate cords in the balloon itself to bring it down, and it would fall exactly has you have seen. Although, they are generally much, much bigger.

Chase planes were required to have sight on it before det, and would monitor it all the way to the ground. I would often be the first on the scene to recover the remains.
Harmless stuff, but very cool. We had to really work hard usually to convince the landowner that all was ok.

Basically, the Roswell "balloon" story has changed at least twice. It was first described as a simple weather research radar target used to track winds aloft. Then it was explained as a "Project MOGUL" balloon which was a purely military project.

#1 - Something crashed in Roswell, NM in June/July of 1947
#2 - It was first reported to be a "flying saucer" and later identified as a "weather balloon".
#3 - We have no physical, indisputable evidence of what a crashed flying saucer looks like.
#4 - BUT...NOW...we DO have physical, indisputable evidence of what a crashing/crashed weather balloon looks like.

NOTE: If you are expecting this video to contain some long-lost archival footage from 1947 then I'm sorry to disappoint you. What it does in fact show is a modern day crash landing of a 2,500lbs research balloon. The video clearly shows that a balloon of this type leaves almost no debris field and very little impact evidence on a grassy surface. More details available upon request.
