  • Nice ARCA brakes, Hollenbeck.

  • larry races up in michigan currently at kalamazoo speedway.... 62 sportsman

  • That was nice of Kenseths crew to help repair the 44

  • I thought he was dead when i saw this.

  • @cousinearl216

i thought he was as well. i think speed did as well. they wouldn't show replays or the car right after the wreck. sheltra is a local boy done good from Illinois. he use to race LM's alot a few years back. i thought he had a nationwide team this year?

  • i remember this. my friends were about to come over to watch the bud shootout and they had just goten hear. we were like, HOLY SHIT!!!! i believe he suffered a concusion and he was out cold for like 3 minutes or something. it delayed the bud shootout.

  • The only driver in ARCA that knows how to use brakes is Logano because hes in NASCAR and there's alot of big ones in the cup.

  • patrick was NOT ok, he was in the hospital till March

  • I think he was in a coma for a little bit actually...

  • ARCA=Another Rich kid Crashes Again.

  • Sometimes I swear that ARCA drivers forget to use the brakes when they see a wreck in front of them (see 2005 ARCA race at Daytona case in point)

  • i saw this live. it was bad. i agree do arca cars have brakes. its like oh... crash gas gas gas

  • do arca cars come equipped with brakes? seems like they never slow down for wrecks.

  • @justin05iowa ARCA = Always Ready to Cause Accidents

  • @justin05iowa its because sometimes its safer to do so, if you slow down, you have a better chance of hitting someone because your breaking and you wont be able to move as easy to miss something, greg biffle talked about it one time, i beleive i got what he said right

  • the guy who hit patrick probably didnt even see what happened through all that smoke

  • One of the scariest wrecks ive seen ever. Glad he's ok.

  • OOOOOOOHHHH.... I felt that one from here...

  • That's why you need spotters.

  • somewhat like it.

Renshaw hit Martin square on the door, this crash, the 60 took the shot more on the rear rather than square on the door, but still a vicious hit regardless

  • the brake is on the left #23

  • The scariest part of the whole thing when it happened is that they would not show a replay, or even show a shot of his car with the emergency crews helping him, so I was sure at the time it was a fatal crash...

  • wow! did you hear the sound of the crash when it was live??? i have 5.1 headphones and that ceash sounded bad.

  • @e521soediv ow

  • @e521soediv My GF and I were sitting over to the right of the start/finish line in the Petty tower and it was even very loud from where we were...we thought for sure at least one of them was killed...It was a horrific to watch in person...We had enough time to go back to our Hotel and change to warmer clothing for the Shootout and come back during the Red Flag for this it was so long.

  • hollenback did not know sheltra was there. That being said he still should have slowed up at any sign of smoke.

  • I agree. You can not miss a blinding neon car like that. And the superspeedway lights made it even more bright. That was sick.

  • attempted murder? wat r u smokin?

This crash still scares me-so happy that Patrick's ok and came back and won his very next race.

  • Look at 2:48, it almost seems as though the camary behind the pacecar has strobes. It must just be a reflection lol

    It sure looks cool

  • didnt the spotter of 23 say anything to that driver or was the 23 driver just stupid

  • 23 is very irresponsible.. he had plenty of time to get slowed down.

  • I agree. At least from Superspeedway racing. He had so much time to back off the gas and move to the bottom and didn't.

  • Heard him on sirius today, thank goodness he's ok!

  • should have said back it down and stay high not floor it with the way the 60 was sliding to a stop if he had been there 1/4 or 1/2 second later he probably barely clips him at 135 and everyone walks away.

  • im surprised they didn't wreck while lining up on the wall for the red flag

  • The spotter said "Floor it and go high"... so no he didnt do all he could do. When the yellow comes out they need to get out of the gas. Holleneck is an idiot.

  • This kind of thing happens again and again and again in the ARCA series

  • You may be right on that, actually. I had forgotten all about that series completely.

  • Look back at years past at Daytona and Talladega (hell, throw Pocono into that list too) - driver still don't slow down from a wreck in front of them in this series.

Didn't a pace car driver get killed at Daytona a number of years ago because of somebody not paying attention in ARCA?

    I stick beside Mystrsyko's statements whole-heartedly too!

  • i think that was goody's dash. i remember somebody was killed after being hit by one of the cars on the track. the driver was i think either paraplegic or handicapped and was driving a different type car. i forget what year it was

  • I count 7 seconds between Sheltra's car first pouring tire smoke, and the impact from Hollenbeck. That's plenty of time for Hollenbeck to slow down and move out of the way. And spotter errors or not, you don't go blasting through a cloud of smoke at full speed. Like I said before, this is a reoccurring mistake that ARCA drivers make way too often

  • its pretty hard to slow down from 170+ mph. plus remember what driver is thinking, he's trying to make up spots as others spin out, and if he tries to get out of the way too quickly he'll wreck himself. Just a simple hesitation results in an ugly wreck like this. I agree that he could've slowed down, but its harder than it looks.

  • The field is froze when the yellow comes out. He can not make up spots on the spinning cars...

    Hollenbeck has no excuse.

  • Actually, it was about a 1620 0.o

  • These ARCA drivers shouldn't be racing at Daytona or Tally because they are TOO FUCKING STUPID to learn not to race back to the caution, especially since the crash is happening right in front of you!

Sheltra was almost stopped when Hollenbeck creamed him at full speed!

Absolutely pathetic on the part of Larry Hollenbeck and his spotter!

  • They aren't stupid, they are usually just not as experienced on large tracks so this stuff happens.

  • Dont trash ARCA drivers just because 1 spotter is an idiot. There are a LOT of talented drivers in this series and there's one spotter who's not paying attention. That doesn't mean that all the drivers are "too fucking stupid"

  • at least that's what i think

  • it's not the drivers it's the track and other things...... on Daytona they aren't even thinking of ever putting on the brakes unless they are basically pitting and they might not have even known about the crash ahead of them those things happen so fast just didn't have that good reaction time

  • That's what spotters are for.

  • He had over 7 seconds of time. The yellow was out. The ARCA cars have a light on the dash that comes on when the caution comes out. They also have lights around the track that blink when the caution is out. He had time to back out of the gas and slow down. Plus he had a spotter, a dumb on infact who said "Floor it, go high"....

    Stop taking up for him.

  • it never changes. i dont think i'll ever see an arca crash where the drivers actually use their brakes. un-friggen-real

  • Kenny Wallace said on SPEED Channel today before Cup qualifying that Patrick Sheltra was alert and complaning about his back; nonetheless, he is feeling ok.

  • Why didn't we get a bunch of replays of this wreck like they always do. They had plenty of cameras there to cover the Cup race. The shot off the wall would have been awesome.

Very similar to the Debra Renshaw wreck at Charlotte when she killed the driver. This guy had plenty of time to stop. This wreck was 100% avoidable.

  • NASCAR and most other racing series networks (like SPEED) don't always immediately show replays of a vicious accident in case the driver is killed. Once they get the OK that the driver is alive, the film begins to show.

First one I can think of was Geoffrey Bodine's huge crash in the trucks in 2000 in Daytona. They showed no replays of the accident for 20 mins or so until he was extracted from the remains and was confirmed alive.

  • Because it was Live and they did not want to show a replay of it since both drivers were injured and not out of the cars.

  • Im in daytona still..they are both alert and okay..They got held over nite for further observation..they guys wrecked all over the place and hard hits too..mostly cuz guys werent slowin down

  • omg dude when that one guy hit that green car it scared the crap out of me.

  • Im not a driver but it seemed like the yellow had been out long enough to slow, Seemed like an idiot move on Hollenbecks part, maybe Im wrong. Does ARCA race back to the line like CUP use to.

  • Possibly Sheltra might have died too, if it was the 80's.

  • If That Happened in the 80's Hollenbeck would have died.

  • damn, that was a horrible wreck.

I heard about this wreck last night listening to the World of Outlaws race, hope he is ok.

  • Any word on Sheltra's condition?

  • He's listed in stable condition at Halifax. He said he has some back problems, but other than that hes fine

  • Patrick Sheltra was taken to the hospital and has not been released yet he is awake and alert god bless him

  • Both drivers were taken to the hopsital Patrick Sheltra and Larry Hollenback. Hollenback was cut out of his race car. I don't think patrick Sheltra was though

  • thank god they are ok

  • Was that Kenny Schrader announcing?

  • Yes, Schrader plus the usual Truck team of Rick Allen & Phil Parsons.

  • That was real bad. I saw the wreck on TV and you could hear it, my heart stopped. Thank God both those drivers are alive.

  • Hollenback almost hit Bobby Gerhardt by speeding by him after a crash the caution before this. He needs to learn to slow down when the caution comes out, (maybe he just did). Other ARCA drivers were doing the same thing, crashing 20 seconds after the yellow is out is rediculous. Glad to see they are both alive , i wasn't too sure about Sheltra.

  • I hear you right there, that guy was driving with his head up his ass Days of Thunder style.

  • probably one of the hardest crashes in the last years.

  • THE LARRY EXPRESS !

  • Man, I cringed when I saw this live; reminded me of Richard Petty's crash in '88. Thank God they're both okay.

  • When it comes to crashes like that, there's not much ARCA or the teams could do. They just happen at the end of races. It's just part of running at Daytona.

  • man, i was watchin it on speed earlier today, 3 big multi car wrecks, lots of hard hits... then this... holy shit that was a hard it. i freaked out when i saw it, just glad there both alright. they took a while extracting both drivers

  • Damn! I remember Larry Hollenbeck from a few years ago when he ran a busch race at Talladega. Glad his ok, that wreck looked scarey! For some reason, SPEED TV never would show any replays of this crash durning their coverage.

  • Because they didn't want to show either guy being killed or seriously injured. Other networks have done it as well, its just been such a long time since a very scary moment like this.

  • It's been years since I've seen a crash like that. I heard Patrick Sheltra is being held overnight for observation. He's a good driver. Finished 2nd at DuQuoin last year.

  • This crash reminds me of Steve Park a few years ago at Darlington that almost ended his life. So happy Patrick and Larry are ok, hopefully ARCA can learn from this race, because it was not pretty, and this was the worst of the ugliness.

  • I know. I was there, and they would not show any replays at the track either. I think it was because they were afraid that he had been seriously injured.

  • I think that's it. ARCA and the broadcasters did not want to risk replaying a competitor losing his life or sustaining major injuries. That was the worst wreck I've seen in a long time. Years.

  • They'll probably show replays of this wreck at the next televised ARCA race, they did the same thing with that huge wreck at the end of the Daytona race a couple years ago when Billy Venturini was injured. I think they finally showed replays of it at the Pocono race.

And I really think ARCA needs to reconsider running at Daytona. It seems like there's always at least one serious accident caused by dumb driving. There were several in this race, and this one could've easily been fatal.

  • yes it could have easily been fatal becasue of the hevay impact by both Drivers Larry Hollenback and Patrick Sheltra

  • Not only the impact, Patrick Sheltra could have been killed by the shear G-forces of the spin after the impact.

  • From the ARCA website front page: ARCA RE/MAX Series drivers Patrick Sheltra and Larry Hollenbeck have been admitted to a local hospital following a late race accident at Daytona International Speedway. Both drivers were conscious and alert when transported and will remain overnight for further evaluation. The families of both drivers reported they are in good spirits.

  • ohhhhmg

  • i just watched nascar nic. they r both ok

  • worst wreck i have ever seen right there.

  • Howq many cars ended up finishing?

  • YEs he is awake and conscious...both drivers are. NASCAR Racaday reported this info on SPEED Channel about twenty minutes ago. Thank God...my stomach lurched into my throat!

  • Raceday said they are awake and alert.

  • oh my god...listen to that impact!! o_O, i was scared to death when i say this, i was hoping for the best, thankfully, both alive,

  • good thing hes ok.....i didnt want to upload it before i knew they both ok, but since you already got it i wont upload it now

  • Sheltra didn't come out of the car contious. He was uncountios.

  • this race was a one big destruction derby. Thank God hes ok

  • Yeah, that was a really hard hit. I think Hollenbeck had to have had a broken nose because I think his nose was bleeding from top to bottom. I don't know about Patrick Sheltra. I pray that they are ok.

  • I have the link that says that Patrick sheltra is in stable condition at the Halifax Medical Center, just can't post it in the comments. Send me a pm for me to send it.

  • send me the link to pm
