No, the penny has copper in it and i soaked it in a base over a flame. This is an older penny so it has a high amount of copper. it does not work with newer pennies because there have a replacement that doesn't contain copper the copper in the old pennies were worth more than a penny. I hope this makes sence to you :)

basically u need liquid sodium hydroxide + zinc fillings, heat them together. Add penny into the beaker of naoh + zn. Stir and the penny should turn silver. Put its over a fame to get a gold looking plate around the coin! MAGIC. its not gold its brass btw
