  • Guilherme você está perfeito!

  • at the end

  • Man I would love to hear the tenors suspend on the 4-3.

  • Beautiful music!

  • Here's what struck me, and I wonder how many others noticed, each of the vocal parts has its own clef sign!!! It's odd, but very appropriate I think, to publish choral music with the respective Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass clefs. Took me back to my high school Music Theory and Concert Choir classes where we saw these all the time. Sadly few publishers use these now. Instrumentalists know them choristers should too.

  • WaO..! que bello

  • that tenor part at the end...always gives me chills!

  • It should be in a flat lol but the score says f major

  • 1:39 the bass part leading into the chord....heaven

  • It's very pretty

    Like a deer

  • @Fordrasyle before it gets shot

  • @TheJboysfilmcorp The Latin translation comes out to be "As the hart longs for running water, so longs my soul for you, O God."

"hart" is the renaissance word for deer.

    Just so you know. :)

  • excellent!!! :))

  • 1:36

Ese 'anima mea' de sopranos y contraltos siempre me emociona! :)

  • Anima...

  • What key is this in? It's definitely not in F major on this recording! It's pitched too high for that...

  • @edders05 it's in A flat, not sure why the key signature is in F... lol

  • @edders05 Wow that's a sensitive ear you have. I never would have noticed, but when you mentioned it I checked, and it must be in F# major because the opening two notes, which are written as a G, were actually sung as a G#. So I guess it is a half-step higher than written.

  • Pelstrina probably got his dick sucked a lot for making awesome music back in the days.

  • Quelle merveille...

  • beautiful!

  • Simply beautiful! Thanks for sharing :)

  • Palestrina was, in my opinion, the perfect composer. He never wrote a bad piece of music, and every time I listen to or perform this song, I end up crying.... and i'm a 16 year old guy.

  • There are many versions of Sicut Cervus out there but this is the best and in my opinion this recording is the most beautiful piece of music ever written and performed. Thank you for uploading it.

  • This is a chalenging piece but arnt all the good ones XP love the post

  • such a difficult song to memorize...especially as a tenor!

  • man my choir sounded nothing like that hahaha

  • NICE!

  • where is the cantus firmus in this song?

  • @rbdbety top voice, I would guess?

  • @rbdbety The song passes on the melody between the parts. There are moments where the soprano stops singing and the other three parts will exchange the melody.

  • @rbdbety if you listen the tenors are the first to sing the melody which then gets passed around between the parts, which is only noticeable because the part that has the melody is the most heard part at the time

  • Contrapuntal form of writing... The beginning of Opera

  • LOL ... the notes and the melody don´t follow eachother !!!! LOL ... LOL ... LOL !!!

  • 1:35

oh yes.... reminds me of a Whitachord

  • Everything beautiful finds its resolution in Deus. Art imitates life.

  • Wonderful. It brought tears to my eyes.

  • The man that saved Catholic Music.

  • we are currently singing this song, with a whole choir SATB... i doubt it can be this good. brought tears to my eyes

  • Pity about the clefs in the score. It would have been much more useful to have found a score with just treble and bass clefs. Anyone who can read soprano and alto clefs isn't likely to need training materials on youtube!

  • A dislike? -_-...

  • You can lead one person to the streams of beautiful Renaissance choral music, but you apparently can't make them drink.

  • @tesubcalle I read a comment really elegant and a bit ironic. I would add that the page of '"Ita desiderat anima mea" is, for me, one of the most beautiful pages in the history of music. Sometimes it seems to me to hear a faint echo of this in the beginning pages of second movement of Symphony No. 1 "Spring" by Schumann. What do you think about it?

  • And by the way, although the sheet music indicates this is in F major, it's actually in A-flat. I checked with a pitch pipe - A-flat is, as far as I know, the original key anyway, and singing it down a minor third would be needlessly difficult for the altos and baritones (the basses would be just fine xD).

  • Splendida e armoniosa esecuzione.

  • Wait. What in god's name is going on with the clefs in this score?

  • @carahnaseem lol. That's called a C-Clef. - - :D The note C starts in the VERY center of that particular clef.

  • @willjustice89

    It's actually called

  • @carahnaseem This is why being a bass or baritone is so convenient when singing Renaissance music. =D

  • @carahnaseem In order, the clefs are soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. As you can tell, they correspond with the vocal range. Soprano clef has been dropped for treble, as you may know, and so has alto (in vocal music).

  • @carahnaseem Alto and Tenor clefs.

  • BRAVO!

  • Returning to Sicut cervus (see my previous comment) I would like to add that running a little 'less traditional, with vocal effects and rhythmic changes the piano-forte-piano, highlight, in my opinion, the fact that the page of' Palestrina Ita desiderat anticipates three centuries, the emotional outbursts of a Beethoven or a Schumann

  • Personally, without having studied music, I think on the staff to transfer the phrase "ita desiderat anima mea" Palestrina has created by far one of the most beautiful pages of music of all time. I hear echoes the opening of the second movement of Symphony No. 1 by Schumann "Spring" but it is my feeling.

  • There are very few things in the world I can think of as beautiful as this one. This is divine. I'm very sorry for those who are not able to understand and appreciate this kind of music. Musica davvero divina, Musica Sacra - appunto.

  • @ALupusAlbertus word up! this is the best

  • the worst part of this song is 2:23

  • @shahen101 No, it isn't. I hit "Replay" :)

  • 1 person does not know what it means to be at peace.

  • this is soooo shit and borin y do they sing such shittt all da tym its all abt rap n dubb steo but i imagin u r all too poncy for PROPER MUSIC insted u listen to ur gaybois singing shit lyk dis.

    FAGGOTS!!

  • @chavboi111

How did you even figure out how to get here?

  • @chavboi111 I do not even think I could type like that if I tried.

  • @chavboi111 Then you must be a faggott too for listening to this. I mean, how did you come to listen to it in the first place. I suspect that you are a closet queer.

  • @AaronLeBaron1 wat da fuck is ur probblem u fink i lyk dis shitt it was on a link from another vid i was watchin and i jus clikked on it and i find dis crappy quiet boring fuck shit oh yeh lets all sing lyk wankers and gays dey shud all be shot and if u disagre ur gay too so fuck off

  • @chavboi111 Calm down, please. Just because you don't like this particular style of music does not mean that it is not beautiful or good, and it also does not mean that you are required to go and insult it and all who listen to it in the comments. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and opinion is not law.

  • 0 dislikes I love it!

  • palestrina = god

  • This is one of my favorite songs to sing in choir!!!!! It's just really beautiful to listen to. I hope we can make it sound like this with only 14 people in our choir...

  • I like the way he doesn't allow it to quit, building one suspension after another, and then all resolving at the very last.

  • we are doing this song in my show choir class at eastlake high school. my part is the tenor

  • PerFEcTo...!! La BeLleZa De Lo GrAnDe... WaO..!

  • essa é a melhor do mundo!

  • its so hard to find my favorite parts in this song!

    i'm torn between :16 through :30

    and :40 through :53

    its just great all together!

  • @LambentBoleyn The answer is quite simple. The best part of the piece is from 0:01 to 2:23!

  • @LambentBoleyn very hard! I think the best is tenor's "desiderat" 1:36 followed immediatly by bass' "desiderat" and then tenor's "anima". Beautiful :)

  • i love how that Bb major chord sounds final at the end, and then he just switches right to F major.

and people say modes are useless.

  • I swear that there is nothing better than the "oo" of that last note.

  • Beautiful

  • I performed this in high school with my choir, I love this. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!

  • my choir is singing this, but alittle slower. we're doing it for choral festival & we're also doing "gloria fanfare" composed by jeffery ames."

  • @baby0940 - where are you from? which choral festival? Maybe in Gorizia...:-)

  • @kmaczkowiak - i'm from michigan. it was the msvma choral festival in northville, michigan on the 17th of march. we ended up making it to states, so now we are going to state choral festival in holt, michigan on the 29th of april.

  • @baby0940 Hi! Congratulations! I'm from Poland and actually my choir prepairs this nice song also :-)... Good luck for the state festival!

  • @kmaczkowiak well, i hope it turns out great for you & your choir! & thank you very much.

  • breathtakingly beautiful

  • nice voices, they blend so well... this version is a tad bit fast for my liking, but it's excellent nonetheless

  • I love this piece, but I'm really struggling with hearing the alto part in the last couple measures.

  • Ugh, 0:35-0:38 is breathtaking.

I sang this once in a high school with a, well, less than enthused choir, for the most part. Such a shame, because it was by far my favorite piece. It sounded incredible even being sung sub-awesome by most people. Imagine how amazing it is in person when it's done perfectly!

  • najpiękniejsza muzyka, jaką kiedykolwiek słyszałem

  • My hs chorus is singing this song. :) Its very pretty.

  • Very balanced.. great job!

  • Full domain of polyphony and counterpoint... Bravo!

  • I like how there is always 4-3 suspension on "anima" meaning "soul" : ravashing.

  • @ericbelify as if your soul is being held from relief. or suspended above rest.

good call bro, thats called musicianship right there.

  • @ericbelify I noticed that too. Beautiful isn't it? :)

  • @ericbelify I have always felt Palestrina was a composer with a lot of soul..

  • I think it's a really work of art. I love it.

I sang it for the first time yesterday and now I can't stop!

    Thank you for posting it!

  • I actually prefer the part after 1: 34 and 1: 44 where I perceive that the women's voices create a great cadence of sublime feelings

  • My choir sang this for a national festival earlier this year. Thank you for posting! I appreciate that you included the sheet music, too.

  • if you listen very well and study the flow of the music, it has a eerie feel to it

  • Ahh I remember singing this at state competition. <3

  • I love the part after 1:20 with the major seventh between soprano and alto!!

  • @saschamuecke ...its actually a P5th, not a M7th (different clefs)

  • @saschamuecke yeah thats really cool

  • Wow, in a hurry guys? This is supposed to be a thought out, reflective piece!

  • @Natofade nah bro, if they take it a little faster, who gives a damn. its perfectly in tune, thats the biggest thing.

  • @musicmister20102010 You're quite right my friend, it is perfectly in tune, and that is most definitely to be appreciated. It's just that from my experience of performing this piece it is most effective when taken at a more relaxed pace :)

I do love this though, and when it's done well it's enough to give you shivers!

  • @Natofade well, personally, i think the ending is best at this speed, but i agree that the begining is a bit fast.

  • @Natofade If it's done too slow, then the choir members will run out of breath during those long melismas, especially the tenors.

  • Who is the 2nd part (Siti vit anima mea)?:-)

  • Professional!

  • That's nice.

I sung it in a choir too :)
