My grandmother is dying from stomach cancer and always sings this song when the whole family get's together. She has requested we all sing it at her wake when the time comes. What a bunch of great memories I get from hearing this!
I'm Mike McNamara, born in Boston in1948, now elsewhere. This is the song I learned as a child from the nuns at the parish church. This is the song I taught my sons; they have never heard Bing sing it. They are grown adults, but they can still learn.
@Snowcap89 I also learned this song as a child from my mother who learned it from her nuns. I'm 29 and have sung it my whole life, friends always got a kick out of it. Funny the things you remember and keep with you. This and Galway bay by Bing....thanks for sharing.
Actually, this song came out in 1946 and according to n4zc.com was the 133rd biggest hit of the year, equivalent to approximately a #20 hit on the Billboard charts since the mid-1950s. Quite un-Crosby compared to his sterotypical ballad image and definately has that postwar spirit and pride to it.
this song is sooo great!!!!!! I'm irish and my family would all get up and sing this song whenever we had a family party.... such a great song to sing when you've had a few whiskeys
My grandfather, John McNamara, would always sing this song to us when we were little. So many memories attached to it and Bing sings it so perfectly
