This guy is sad. This is the best the Grand Ole Party could present this year? Another senile old man as President? Didn't Reagan's second term teach us anything?
Zapateros, zapeta, zapatistas...he thought they were talking about Mexico. But that doesn't explain his "senior moment" when the interviewer clearly said without much accent at all the words "Spain" and "Europe."
ive listened to this pretty carefully, and its clear mcCain had a tough time with the fast talking spanish accent.
she said "what about europe" and it sounded just like "what about you" which is what he heard.
its a little surprising he didnt manage to catch either "spain" or "zapatero" in the original question but he did miss it and like a dumbass went with a standard answer instead of getting a clarification.
hes just makes him an old man who doesnt hang with latinos and has shitty hearing.
I couldn't agree with you more. Everything would've been fine if his campaign's foreign policy wonk simply said, "Senator McCain simply misheard the question and believed the interviewer was still referring to the Mexican President rather than the Spanish President." Instead, he made McCain look even worse (which is not hard).
McCain's brain is eroding. If elected this drooling old man may serve as a puppet to represent the US and the image in the world for a long long time. Who knows when he'll kick it. Spain's already pissed about that remark.
no doubt he's redirecting the attention because he is confused, which is disturbing. what this translates to is he says he doesn't know and doesn't want to give a specific answer until he consults with his advisors.
however, he should know who the President of Spain is, and addressed that as Zapatero's name was very clear when mentioned.
perhaps McCain has too much blind trust in his advisors so he didn't bother to pay attention.
I've got it. Remember the '50-ft tall' dog in The Sandlot? That's Palin. And the old man who owns the dog is McCain.
Now understand that the metaphor ends about halfway through the movie, because in the end, the old guy turns out to be really cool. So the metaphor only applies to the first half or so of the movie.
Cringe...even after reading about it and knowing where it was going that was hard to listen to. How is anybody still taking him seriously as a candidate?
He clearly didn't understand what she said, which puts him in a pickle: If he had asked her to repeat, it would have been viewed (in these times) as hesitation and lack knowledge on the subject, so he keeps going on about another subject. McCain didn't make a mistake, his campaign did.
How in the hell can you possibly say McCain understood what he was saying? Wasn't he listening? There were more pauses and "uh"s in this small segment than... than... okay there's nothing to compare.
It's hard for McCain not to stick his foot in his mouth over and over when all he's got to work with is a short list of memorized talking points, rather than actual thought.
Yeah, he probably did get a little confused. Thing is, I think he's screwed either way - if he admits that he was confused, he'll just be jumped on for "not knowing what he's talking about." Whether that's actually the case I cannot say. Still, I think that's a huge hindrance to any desire he may have to be honest. It'll just turn into a huge political point.

She said "President of Spain" he replies "What about me? what?"
Obviously when she said Spain he thought she said McCain.
much ado about nothing.

She had a very thick accent. Obama wouldn't be able to understand her either.
Veracifier, can we get a video criticizing McCain? Your bias is showing.
MooseOfReason 3 years ago
A video criticizing McCain? I think that could be considered one.
Even though this video not highly critical and is just reporting what he said, and also reporting his lack of knowledge in foreign affairs.

TPM don't make a big deal about this because the message McCain gives will resonate with the bubba voters. This does not hurt McCAin
