Thank you for posting this series--it was a real gift. I have hiked to Pu'u'O'o (before it was banned to hikers due to the danger), climbed Mauna Loa twice, hiked the Kilauea Iki trail...and every time I am standing in those places I think of the power of the earth under my feet. Thank you for these clips.
I love that calm guy walking by calmly smoking his cigarette like it's the most boring thing in the world and he is trying to get to something more important.
Nobody was killed by these two eruptions in late 1959 and early 1960, but just months later, about 60 people were killed in the city of Hilo by a tsunami generated by an earthquake in Chile - tumultuous times on the island of Hawaii. I saw the aftermaths of these events in June 1960. The cinder cone from the Kapoto eruption was still hot.
I remember seeing both these eruptions when I was small. The Kapoho eruption was quite spectacular.....and frightening. I remember the great roar and the cinder fall. The police guard drove away and we were the last left parked at the eruption. I think my dad started to loose his nerve, and we left. Cannot forget this eruption. Thank again for the film.
Thank you very much for all 4. Absolutely fascintating and truly enlightening. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Please post anymore that you may have or find.

Funny how he pronounces Lava XD

Imagine the immense pressure it would take to shoot molten rock 1700 feet into the air. That's over a quarter of a mile.

Is Mauno Loa active, or is it just Kilawea?
darkhappiness 2 years ago
@darkhappiness Mauno Loa erupted during the mid 80's for sometime...guess it's classified as active but dormant.

@Dhragonfly I would imagine the orchids are for all the lei (s) that everyone to Hawaii gets....chuckle

@Dhragonfly They contain a unique natural toxin that is refined and used in cardiac surgery to stop the heart very quickly and safely
