Hi everyone. I am from Istanbul/Turkey, living in Los Angeles. The oud has a mythic status, its origins hidden in antiquity and enhanced by myth, story, and legend.
Beginning with the name, al-oud is traditionally taken from the Arabic for “the wood.” The definite article al was dropped in Turkish and in Turkey the instrument is simply known as oud or ud (a matter of transliteration into English).
Turkiyede cok udiler dinledim, degil benzerlik, yakinindan bile gecmiyorlar,bu ne sanatkarlik be Simon Shaheen bey,you create almost new maqams, you let the oud speak, thanx

Hello from Finland, I love this music, I have one old Taqasim-LP and I have listened it through decades whenever I want to relax. It spontaneously helps on concentration and is "meditative" because of natural rhytm. I think "Music Of The Gods" really is right term to describe this music, no matter where you come from or what is your spiritual vibe or religion, you just feel this inside.
LOL... a foolish debate which ignores the beauty of the music. The ancient Greeks derived much of their culture from North Africa; Pythagoras discovered his knowledge in Egypt. Culture circulates with no cultural or national boundaries. To originate this music in the Byzantine is as ignorant as originating in the Garden of Eden. It has always been with us.

unless you are an arab, dont talk about it..cause you know shit..what do you mean by improved design?? you should talk more spacified not just showing you self as you know something, infact you know nothing..again unless you're and arab dont talk about it.
kamanjate, the ottomans lived, influenced and were invluenced by other nations hundreds of years. Your statement may apply western countries, but in my opinion anyone with origins from middle east do have a natural way of understanding Taksim-kind-of musical playings. This guy plays well, but there are other people who do it well too...peace my brother!
bro..you can call the MASTER SIMON SHAHEEN this guy..in our studies says no matter do,no matter how long you practice 100 years?? you cant play chines music as the chines people do.and thats same to other nations.even if we were occupied by ottomans,we still have our oen music and style of playing,we share the idea, but not the music..thats why people steel music from each other, cause they cant produce the same quality
No. You don't need to be Arab. Although this style of great music comes from Arabia, the Middle East, and Turkey, anyone who feels it in their heart and diligently studies the music and culture can play it. 95, don't listen to closed-minded, small people who want to try to possess all the beauty as if it was property.
You are right my friend but, a small "correction" : this kind of music came from Constantinople/Byzantium.Before byzantium the music of all civilizations was very simple melodic lines.A lot civilizations contracted for the creation of Byzantine music.Byzantine music based on ancient Greek music system(pythagorean music theory, pythagorean comma/limma/apotome quarter tones, microtones etc.) Socrates called this music system "music of the gods". Its true..its music for ESOTERISM!Just for the history
@lefterhsk1 pfff this music is pure arabic & not byzantine neither greek nor constatine. & what socrates you're talking about! you are really out of mind! This is arabic since 15th century & known by zyriab from bagdad Iraq who was invited by lot of king in andalousia spain then spread his music to turkey, greek, itally. mediterannee anyway, but setled i spain where he created the first concervatory in europe...consult wikipedia & revise your lessons befor talking cauz u're out of mind.
@musksud read better before you answer! i didnt say this music belongs to Greeks or Byzantines...i wrote: A lot civilizations contracted for the creation of Byzantine music, Arabs too,and i am speaking about looong time before 15th century you said. i also wrote about the music system of this kind of music... the founder of this music system is Pythagoras..."tetrachords" existed..renamed to byzantine "echoes" and later renamed to "makam". but music belongs to everyone..there is not copywrite
@lefterhsk1 he again spread arabo-andalous to Qartaj in tunisia, telmcen in algeria & not constantine, then tetouan, tanger, fes was largely spread & have other own kind of moroccan arab andalous music, because it was from morocco that the invasion of spain started & invited known zyriab who was exiled from iraq of playing better Oud than his master in the places of sultans............ect. culture yourself
@JDMUHR Anyway, this is pure arabic creation! You talk about studies on culture & music, you can just shed an eye on wikipedia & you'll learn more. Zyriab! oud instrument! pure arabic! That tells u sth? To add, Simon shaheen is pure arabic & & arabic PPalestinian too. What a dirty man you are! racist you are son of bitch. If u are cultured, the music of simon is the music for of peace! & u must respect his arabic identity. Who is close-minded now? Archaic man u are. This music ins't for u. fuck
He started his taksim with Nawa Athar then he ended the taksim with Huzam which is part of the Segah after that he played Samai Huzam for Muhammad Abdel-Wahab.
In fact I don't know Simon, you told me about him and I don't know if he is Armenian or Arabic. You know that Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine they live a lot of Armenian and they talk the Arabic plus the Armenian and probably some of them they play the Arabic music
To be honest I don't know a musician (at least of my friends in Iraq, Egypt and Jordan) who plays the Arabic music; most of the Armenians play the Classical or the Jazz in the Arabic countries.
He started his taksim with Nawa Athar then he ended the taksim with Huzam which is part of the Segah after that he played Samai Huzam for Muhammad Abdel-Wahab.

We are not all Ottomans. We were all under ottoman rule. But we still are all brothers. We have the same soul and we have the same music in our hearts. That is what we should not forget and stop arguing. Greetings.
simon shaheen yahabibi you are the best ..thanks to tahirakbey for posting this video ...in 6.39 shaheen start playing the only sama3i hozam abdelwahab did in his life...
simon shaheen is my favorite , he is a very talented oud player , and a violin player also , and i want from him personally , more videos and more contribution to oriental classical music . God bless you and foreward
i'm unfamiliar with this type of music, but greatly enjoyed this superb player - incredible technique and beautiful emotion. is this a classical or traditional piece of music? is there improvisation?

unless you are an arab, dont talk about it..cause you know shit..what do you mean by improved design?? you should talk more spacified not just showing you self as you know something, infact you know nothing..again unless you're and arab dont talk about it.

kamanjate, the ottomans lived, influenced and were invluenced by other nations hundreds of years. Your statement may apply western countries, but in my opinion anyone with origins from middle east do have a natural way of understanding Taksim-kind-of musical playings. This guy plays well, but there are other people who do it well too...peace my brother!
johan314 4 years ago 2
bro..you can call the MASTER SIMON SHAHEEN this guy..in our studies says no matter do,no matter how long you practice 100 years?? you cant play chines music as the chines people do.and thats same to other nations.even if we were occupied by ottomans,we still have our oen music and style of playing,we share the idea, but not the music..thats why people steel music from each other, cause they cant produce the same quality
kamanjate 4 years ago

@lefterhsk1 Thanks for the information friend!

@lefterhsk1 pfff this music is pure arabic & not byzantine neither greek nor constatine. & what socrates you're talking about! you are really out of mind! This is arabic since 15th century & known by zyriab from bagdad Iraq who was invited by lot of king in andalousia spain then spread his music to turkey, greek, itally. mediterannee anyway, but setled i spain where he created the first concervatory in europe...consult wikipedia & revise your lessons befor talking cauz u're out of mind.
musksud 1 year ago
@musksud read better before you answer! i didnt say this music belongs to Greeks or Byzantines...i wrote: A lot civilizations contracted for the creation of Byzantine music, Arabs too,and i am speaking about looong time before 15th century you said. i also wrote about the music system of this kind of music... the founder of this music system is Pythagoras..."tetrachords" existed..renamed to byzantine "echoes" and later renamed to "makam". but music belongs to everyone..there is not copywrite
lefterhsk1 1 year ago
@lefterhsk1 he again spread arabo-andalous to Qartaj in tunisia, telmcen in algeria & not constantine, then tetouan, tanger, fes was largely spread & have other own kind of moroccan arab andalous music, because it was from morocco that the invasion of spain started & invited known zyriab who was exiled from iraq of playing better Oud than his master in the places of sultans............ect. culture yourself
musksud 1 year ago
@lefterhsk1 Wikipedia disagrees with you.
Girk 5 months ago

There is someone saying that Simon is Armenian. Not that I really care but he is not, right? As far as I know he is Palestinian.
ClarinetOfThracia 4 years ago
In fact I don't know Simon, you told me about him and I don't know if he is Armenian or Arabic. You know that Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine they live a lot of Armenian and they talk the Arabic plus the Armenian and probably some of them they play the Arabic music
ahmadjawadi 4 years ago
To be honest I don't know a musician (at least of my friends in Iraq, Egypt and Jordan) who plays the Arabic music; most of the Armenians play the Classical or the Jazz in the Arabic countries.
