I have several Carvin's including a DC 727. It's an outstanding instrument. There's a Floyd available. Actually just about everything is available. Your choice. Their stock pickups are very good.
Agreed! Carvin makes some amazing instruments, and you get a plethora of options. The stock pickups on their DC7x7's are good and very versatile. Excellent for hard rock and blues, and incredible for jazz. However, they were a bit lacking in the high-gain department, I felt, and I switched the bridge out for a DiMarzio a few days ago. The lower register is much more clear now. Still a great pickup, the C26. I'm keeping it for a future 7-string!
I did try the EVO 7 a while back, and I really did like it! I was much more inexperienced back then, though, and I don't think I fully appreciated it. I put in a D-Sonic 7, as I was aiming for something a bit on the heavy side, and I'm NOT disappointed whatsoever.
The stock pickups aren't bad, actually. I've been able to get some very decent sounds out of different amps with these pickups. However, I do feel that there are better pickups out there for the tone I want. They're definitely not bad though, if that's what you want to know. I'd give them a try if I were you, and then, if you're still unhappy, search for replacements!
@AlbertoLaiho Thanks! I play prog metal so I am concerned with both gain and clean tones. I have heard that the gain can be to trebly? Do you find this to be the case?
Certainly so. The neck pickup, for example. When distorted, it has a pretty liquid-y tone, but it also has a very trebbly quality that can be annoying. The bridge pickup has a lot of highs, too. But, even more than that, I find the bass to be rather flubby. These pickups I feel are a great example of "Jack of all trades; master of none." Very versatile, but not focused on any style. With that said, I feel they excel in low-gain situations, for rock and fusion sounds.
Okay, awesome! I'm definitely gonna do that when I get my DC727. I've already got my order placed and it should hopefully be coming in no later than March.
This is meah941, by the way. I decided to make a new account because I wasn't a huge fan of the name. I'm going to post a video of the aesthetics, at least, the second I get it.
@AlbertoLaiho It was pretty standard specs with a little extra frills: Tung Oil Finish Alder Body / 5 Piece Maple/Walnut Neck Walnut top Rounded body sides Ebony Fretboard 14" radius Stainless Steel Med Jumbo Frets GraphTech saddles Engraved Truss Rod cover I'm also sending in a set of strings for them to set it up with because a 56 is gonna be too loose for me for a low B and low A
Yeah dude, don't worry haha they're understandable. Also, that looks like it will be great! Good call on the SS frets. They are the smoothest I've ever played on any guitar! A .056 for the low B can be a tad small if you tune to A. When I don't have plans of tuning down to A, I use either a .059 or a .060 and it works wonders. If there's a phase when I see I'm gonna use a low A a lot, a .062 works well (although you'll have to unwind it to make it fit through the tuning peg!).
I always thought the Stainless Steel frets would be a good idea. It'll obviously last longer than just nickel frets and they're gonna be a lot smoother, like you said.
I'm also sending in strings to get it set up with and it's gonna be a Cleartone 10-52 set and then a low 65 for the B/A. I pick pretty hard and I like to have a lot of tension on the lowest string and the 65 is perfect for me, even though it seems gigantic at first haha.
@AlbertoLaiho im ordering one soon, but I have to get flamed maple as flamed koa is so expensive! Super excited. does the 14" radius work for you shredding and such? I'm used to Ibanez's wizard II radius which is around 16". is it that different?
Their flamed maple is absolutely exquisite as well! Definitely let me know once you get it! :)
As for the radius, I honestly barely noticed the difference. I own two other guitars whose radius is 17" and I can't really tell the difference in the radius. I can only tell the difference when there's a large gap between both radii, say between 10" and 17", or 12" and 20". Honestly, I prefer Carvin's neck over anything else I've tried. Not too thin, not too thick, and fits great in my hands!
Hahaha it's not like I left it there for an entire day to cook under the sun. Plus, it was a relatively cool day in the middle of the spring, with normal levels of humidity. I haven't had to change my set up since then (except strings, of course), so it didn't have any effect on the integrity of my guitar :)
And thanks a lot for the compliment! It really is an awesome instrument :P
wha da fock!? D: man you play really amzingly good! ...how many years have playing guitar?...you play anything clean and heavy isn't haha can you please do a cover of "six" (all that remains) or stairway to heaven solo? maybe some guns n roses...woul be cool!!, sorry my english.... cheers from Venezuela!

You're right. If you want aftermarket pickups, you'd need to route the pickup holes. However, it's apparently very little routing that's needed, and it should be a no-brainer if someone skilled does it! But yeah, Carvin's quality is on par with some of the best in the industry.
Definitely let me know if you get a Carvin! I never get tired of seeing people getting theirs haha. Thanks for the comment! :)
Yeah, you might actually be right. But my other guitars with EMG's just sound better. I'm terrible at describing sounds, but to me, the distorted tones are nicer. Also, with the right equipment, you can make pretty much any guitar with any pickups sound however you like. But yeah, I'm definitely no taking ALL the credit away from the stock Carvin pups... Most stock Ibanez pups, for example, are much worse, I think. And of course... My Randall isn't exactly the best amp ever! Hahaha
It depends on your needs and what you're looking for. And that's why the video is there; so you can draw up your own conclusions. But, generally, I'd say go for it! They're exceptional guitars considering that you can customize many aspects, they're high quality, and extremely inexpensive for the quality you get.
@AlbertoLaiho and the video helped me out alot, i think mill get one :) and just swap out the bridge pickup, when i get it ill make a vid of it and shoot it to ya man thanks :)
im surprised at how good those pups sound clean, i dont care for the distorted tone idk if its the pups or just your tone but i have to get one of these! yours is gorgeous btw lol
But yeah, the C26 pickups are pretty terrible with heavy distortion. I've concluded that this video's distortion part was pretty sucky haha I even bought a 10-band EQ to see if I could get good distorted sounds. But, no matter what I did to them, they kept sucking at high levels of gain. The EQ did improve the sound, but still not to my taste.
The cleans though... They're BEAUTIFUL and sparkly, and BEAUTIFUL for jazz tones!
No problem dude! The DC727 is one of the best guitars I've ever even held. Definitely one of my best investments so far. Let me know if you go through with yours!
Yeah! Haha I butchered that part of the song though, I was playing terribly that day. I'm always happy to know one more person living in/from Bahrain who loves Dream Theater! There's not many of us around here haha cheers!
The tung oil finish is the most silky smooth thing I've touched in my entire life haha no tackiness whatsoever. There's only one drawback, however; it's easy to stain with dirty hands, and on places where your body is in constant contact with the wood, you can see a bit of a 'dull' spot, but it's virtually unnoticeable if you don't know it's there though. You gotta make sure your hands and arms are clean before you play it!
Hey man, i really like your sound and your guitar. I know you give an overview of the specs in the video, but could you post specs below the video as well.
I'm thinking about saving the money up and buying one of these.
I tried giving you the specs through a comment here, but it looked too cluttered and confusing, so I'll just post them up on the info description! I hope it helps!
And thanks for the words man. Definitely let me know if you do order it! :)
I've heard the strings can have some problems when you "chug" really hard. Do you have any problems with this even with the string through model? and do you think it stays in tune as nicely as a floyd would? I've been having a hard time deciding on a 7 String, so thanks for the video and any feedback!
Whenever I don't like the sound of my Carvin, I usually attribute it to the amp I'm using and/or the pickups, which aren't bad, but there are way better. Until I do change those, I really won't be able to know if the string-through construction is to blame :P
And yeah, this thing stays in tune almost perfectly! I haven't been playing much guitar at all lately, and I hadn't played the Carvin for almost a month. When I took it out a couple days ago, it was still perfectly in tune!
@AlbertoLaiho Thanks man! I've heard of a lot of people having that buzz around the headstock when they do that 'chug chug' and after owning guitars with floyd rose's for so long I'd love a neck-through. thanks for the response! You rock!
@AlbertoLaiho pretty short time for a custom made! Haha im thinkin about savin up for one of these so its just one of those things i wanted to know, thanks!
I don't remember exactly, but I think it was about 6 weeks. I had some issues with the wire transfer, so I ended up getting it some 10 days after I was originally supposed to have it. All I can say is that it was an agonizing wait, but so worth it!
Are you by any chance in school for jazz? cause that was some pretty tight AAL for being "Out Of Shape" aha. Seriously though, thinking about picking one of these up with really similar specs. What was the shipping like? I'm up in Canada so I'm a little skeptical to know what shipping is like for Carvin aha Thanks.
Well, considering that I'm not in jazz school (though I kind of wish... I love jazz haha), that is quite a huge compliment! Thank you! :)
Well, I ordered mine from Madrid, Spain. The shipping alone was, if I remember correctly, around $150. They said it would take about a business week. Fact is, it was in my hands within 3 days of them telling me it had shipped! All the way from San Diego to Spain.
So, definitely, if you're in Canada, it will be less money and equal, or less, time.
Incredibly low and comfortable :) By far the most comfortable 7 string I have tried. I measured the action on the low B string to be at exactly 1 mm :)
Well, they ARE custom guitars (semi-custom, actually, but custom for effects of this conversation), so you're bound to like different things than me, thus the price will vary. I'm gonna send you an inbox with the price I paid.
Hahaha nice! I love that song. Though if I had to wake up to it every day, I would end up hating it... It's already happened to me with a couple other songs hahaha "Tempting Time" has been my ringtone for about a year now... And I'm a bit sick of it already haha even though I still love it.
Beautiful instrument you got there too, man! I'm still in love with mine, and it's been more than 6 months since I got it haha. I just wish they had more 7-string models... Although I'd order another DC727 any day!
@AlbertoLaiho Yeah Carvins are sick. I'm not sure if you've seen but they now have a 24 fret california carved top. I've always loved the look of the carved top but hated the limitations of only 22 frets, however, that is no longer an issue. Also when you look at it, notice the access to the 24th fret...unbeleivable.
Oh hell yes I've seen that! That's my other favorite Carvin model apart from this one, the rest of the DC series, and the Holdsworth model. Too bad that the CC's are actually pretty expensive, and they've changed their policy for international customers (other than US and Canada), and they've become ridiculously expensive for us outside North america :(... However, I will some day own one, I'm sure of that :)
@AlbertoLaiho I know I filled out an order form for one and it came to about $2000, however thats still about half the price of a PRS and I suspect the two would match up evenly in terms of build quality and playability. Too bad for those who pay that kind of money for an instrument
Haha thanks bro. That came out really sloppy... But oh well, what's done is done :). What specs are you getting on your Carvin? Definitely let me know once you have it! :)
sweet dude, thats an awesome axe lol at the hairband stuck there, im so jealous of that thing im definatly getting a dc727 soon.. nice loomis sweeps man thanks for the review your a legend!!
Definitely get a Carvin man. They're the best instruments I've ever played. I've even played a couple EBMM JP7, and a BFR JP7, and this thing is right up there with them. Definitely the best 3 guitars I've ever tried. You won't regret it! :)
And thanks so much for the compliments dude! I really appreciate it :)

If you live in the US, it's probably one of the best deals you'll get, considering that you will get exactly what you want with very high quality!
AlbertoLaiho 8 months ago
@AlbertoLaiho haha yeah man!
lskynyrd23 8 months ago
How long did it take from the time you ordered it to the time you got it?
lskynyrd23 8 months ago
@lskynyrd23
I don't remember exactly, but I think it was about 6 weeks. I had some issues with the wire transfer, so I ended up getting it some 10 days after I was originally supposed to have it. All I can say is that it was an agonizing wait, but so worth it!
AlbertoLaiho 8 months ago
Are you by any chance in school for jazz? cause that was some pretty tight AAL for being "Out Of Shape" aha. Seriously though, thinking about picking one of these up with really similar specs. What was the shipping like? I'm up in Canada so I'm a little skeptical to know what shipping is like for Carvin aha Thanks.
DanielMoir 8 months ago
@DanielMoir
So, definitely, if you're in Canada, it will be less money and equal, or less, time.

whats the action like on these bitchs?
P5ych00 8 months ago
@P5ych00
Incredibly low and comfortable :) By far the most comfortable 7 string I have tried. I measured the action on the low B string to be at exactly 1 mm :)
AlbertoLaiho 8 months ago
This is the sickest 7 string

whats one of these gonna run you?
blacksgslayer 9 months ago
@blacksgslayer
Depending on the options you choose, and if you live in the US, anywhere from $900 all the way to $1.5-1.8k
AlbertoLaiho 9 months ago
@AlbertoLaiho I mean one just like yours.
blacksgslayer 9 months ago
@blacksgslayer

And I'm a bit sick of it already haha even though I still love it.

misztal2112 1 year ago
@misztal2112
Beautiful instrument you got there too, man! I'm still in love with mine, and it's been more than 6 months since I got it haha. I just wish they had more 7-string models... Although I'd order another DC727 any day!
AlbertoLaiho 1 year ago
@AlbertoLaiho Yeah Carvins are sick. I'm not sure if you've seen but they now have a 24 fret california carved top. I've always loved the look of the carved top but hated the limitations of only 22 frets, however, that is no longer an issue. Also when you look at it, notice the access to the 24th fret...unbeleivable.
misztal2112 1 year ago
@misztal2112
AlbertoLaiho 1 year ago
@AlbertoLaiho I know I filled out an order form for one and it came to about $2000, however thats still about half the price of a PRS and I suspect the two would match up evenly in terms of build quality and playability. Too bad for those who pay that kind of money for an instrument
misztal2112 1 year ago
n how much did this cost ya?
noobaxeman 1 year ago
Nice Change of Seasons at the beginning. I should be getting a Carvin 727 very soon.

MegaSnickle 1 year ago
@MegaSnickle
PS: Sorry for not notifying you before that I had uploaded this video... I kinda forgot haha but glad you liked it :)
