I have never seen a cello used with pencils!!!! This guy is great but I think he did a little to much with the background, its sorta distracting but other than that this is awsome!
Thanks folks! I recently finished a new video that's even more ambitious. YouTube doesn't allow links in comments, so just search for my name Ethan Winer.

Meanwhile in the real world, prominent figures in small, developing fields such as non classical cello must be questioned, lest we mindlessly praise any old coot who comes along so s/he can ruin something that could have been special.

5. I am no more pissed off at Ethan Winer for creating this music than I am horrified at the audience for blindly considering this to be a work of art. From what I've seen, it seems there has been no real consideration or evaluation into this piece.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
4. I could make a logical tree of why it is true that Ethan Winer is the fuckin' herpes of music and pop/classical crossovers. The pop-classical crossover to begin with is a dubious, thing & must be treated with caution to avoid being shit. This is why i cannot respect Ethan Winer as a cellist/musician - he did not tread with caution. I don't see any merit in this piece of music on any level, except that he obviously put his heart and soul into this. I gotta give him credit for at least that.

3. People being creative with whatever resources to express themselves positively is in fact, a good thing. EXCEPT when it is creating a false image of value and authenticity! Now I'm going to make some assumations about you, jel567. If this was a recorder piece - you wouldn't give a fuck about what this guy had to say musically. Just because it is the cello you immediately place a sense of value on this music. Which in substance is not that great from any idiomatic point of view.
you know, Im not really one for classical s*** i prefer HEAVY metal, BUT this is exceptional and very cleaverly put together
and with that exception this is very cool for a cello
without the crappy stick you move across it, that makes it sound f****** s***!!!! yo gotta use your fingers for this instrument but no one ever does so it will always sound bad thats why i detest a cello with a stick moved across the strings (dunno what the stick is called)
Complex and a great work of intelligence and editing. For the people who put it down with negative comments, I'd imagine they'd be lost on what has to be accomplished to begin to put this together. Seems to be a vein of jealously in their comments. It's an example of what man is capable of executing and producing with what ever he deems necessary to express himself. Great piece.

Ok I'm going to need to defend myself as one the "negative commenters".
1. I am not coming from a jealous mind set here.
Like finnhiggins said, I'll go and be jealous of someone who is actually good at my instrument (cello) such as Hank Williams.
He has done some very good cello work in the avant garde, jazz & pop industries & I'd do anything for a CV like his! Altho i don't like ALL of his work i have a lot of respect for him as a cellist & musician...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
2. It is self evident that this is a complex and well edited piece of work. But intelligence? Perhaps you're mistaking intelligence for a gimmick? All I see is a middle aged man playing the cello in time & mostly in tune along with barely amusing visuals. What is he saying with the music? This is the musical equivalent of spam with heaps of emotive & eye catching words that together, are totally nonsensical. There is no message. Just a load of bollocks!
I think it's a clever way to change and give something that's seen by todays society an outdated instrument a modern twist that's more society friendly.

Yes nonsense is the operative word here. I don't see any plausible arguments for this being a good piece of music at all. This is a large, writhing piece of shit in a sea of weak allusions to pop music and classical ballads. The type of shit you'd see in the $2 bin at your local CD store... "Time Life presents the best of *enter shit band here*. Arranged by James Last".
I agree with the negatives here. This looks like one of those nonsense videos people saw at the end of the old Monkees TV show. It's some of that crap well intentioned teachers use to motivate kids who don't care. The cello is a brilliant instrument with a tradition undeserving of low life muzak foolishness. Rostropovich must be spinning in his grave.
Jealous of what? Why would I be jealous? I'm a drummer, I'll go be jealous of somebody like Elvin Jones who isn't shit and who plays my instrument.
Seriously, I can't see what there is to admire here, this just makes you all look like that kid at school who everybody laughs at but who never figures out why.
If you've been playing cello for years and can't figure out why this is shit then I suggest you stop playing cello for a while until you figure it out...
i'd have to agree... as a cellist myself i find this video repulsive and pretty much antonymous with good taste! what is wrong with this guy? i can't even watch the whole thing... the shit visuals just add the immense crap-ness of its musical quality. sure its musis but how could you tag this as remotely good or entertaining? fuck this guy, i've just lost all hope in humanity after watching this...
That was absolutely bloody horrible. If there's anything keeping the cello as an instrument for classical elitists and a seemingly endless army of cloned new-age hippies with phrase samplers it's crap like this.
i bet he had to time it just right to be able to play that, which i think is amazing. makes me want to play more improv & stuff, & less vivaldi. i wish i could meet this guy!!
