I'm half-Malay, but I've grown up in America all my life so my Bahasa Malaysia is a bit rusty. Watching this video was interesting, because I realized that my Mandarin -- my major in college -- is much better than my BM. It's often difficult to reconcile my identity, especially when framed against the nature of racial politics.
But I'm happy that there are others like me, willing to go out into the world to understand others, rather than construct walls of ignorance around them.

I am not really get the meaning brings by the chocolate. I guess chocolate is something sweet.
The people (Malay, Chinese, Indians and other races) are unable to share the sweet moments everytime. We have to pay for "something" (sacrifice a bit) in order to get a small piece of what we want. Actually we are so close to it (like 5 sen only) or else we are already successful (live in peace and unity, like tasting the sweetness in our life).

Personally, I think that the clip is simply to show to the viewer that all the races still harbour far too many misunderstandings. Since I can only see one point of view, that is the Chinese's, my opinion would be from the Chinese's POV.
The mother told her son to get out of the country, study abroad, because in Malaysia, he will never be able to succeed. Her concept is that you have to be Malay to be successful regardless. -cont.-
The son didn't want to, using the reason that his friends are here, meaning, he has a life here, and going there, it'll all be moot. Chinese are treated as a 'secondary' race in Malaysia, as well as in any other country.
Then we cut to the counter. The conversation between the guy and the girl goes to show that perhaps he understand the idea that not all Malays are as 'privileged' as the Chinese make them out to be. But because of his earlier 'healthy conversation' with his mother,
he vented out his unhappiness on the girl, possibly also with the concept of 'if it weren't because of your race, I wouldn't face this problem'. Then, when she looked hurt (or at least, that's what I think she looked, either hurt or scared, who wouldn't be, with a half naked male suddenly yelling at you) he decided to make it up to her, but was called back by his mother, and probably didn't want to be caught with one of the 'privileged race', especially not to give her a 'free' chocolate.
That said, (in my opinion) the moral of this short clip, is that, if we truly desire a united country, it is everyone's duty. It isn't just one person, one generation, one race, or even one political party. It's everybody. But we are all held back by our prejudice, by our familial obligations, by the 'kiasu/kiasi' mentality, by our fear of moving forward. Perhaps, if one out of every hundred person takes that one step away from the deeply rooted biasness, 1Malaysia may very be reality in
the years to come. But if no one dares or willingly takes that one step... well...

Wow, this is a good video on racial differences between Malays and Chinese. It only concentrates on one issue, which is they way they communicate with each other. The girl is shy and the boy is brash, and yet it may not be the true character of these people. However, when they communicate, it creates a sentiment that soon becomes a generalization of the race.

Yasmin Ahmad is really a great film maker. It's hard to understand this video at first, but reading the comments, I realize how beautiful and profound the message is. I believe that with all this acknowledgment that Malaysia has certain problems, we will sooner or later be able to overcome it and truly become 1Malaysia. No need for slogans, just real application in everyday life. Then this video will just be a reminder of the past...

I am not really get the meaning brings by the chocolate. I guess chocolate is something sweet.
The people (Malay, Chinese, Indians and other races) are unable to share the sweet moments everytime. We have to pay for "something" (sacrifice a bit) in order to get a small piece of what we want. Actually we are so close to it (like 5 sen only) or else we are already successful (live in peace and unity, like tasting the sweetness in our life).

What I think the story brings the message is:
Last generation think that what they do is for their the sake of their children and future but they don't understand what the new generation want. The Chinese guy is born in this country, so he loves his home and insist to left (a patriotic guy I can say). He loves the life here including the people (the Malay girl is one of the people), no matter how the country treats him, or is he really a stupid guy? (Can see his act of putting sumthing on head)

Mother hates Malays. (indicated by the discussion at the beginning)
When the boy sees the girl he actually likes her, but the mother shouts to him as to why he's talking so long (and being nice) to the malay girl.
So he shouts at her to show the mum that he's not being kind/friendly to the Malay girl.
But after she left the shop, he leaves a chocolate for her...

Wow, this is a good video on racial differences between Malays and Chinese. It only concentrates on one issue, which is they way they communicate with each other. The girl is shy and the boy is brash, and yet it may not be the true character of these people. However, when they communicate, it creates a sentiment that soon becomes a generalization of the race.

Malaysia government isn't as rich as the British therefore, the British can afford to give a lot of scholarship unlike our government. no... BN.... they are the biggest problem in Malaysia. Just think about this, our diesel submarine, which is almost 10 times smaller than a nuclear submarine, cost about the same. Where is the logic? Corruption. Simple as that. BN is fulling corrupted.

wow...hahahha....is this a typical joke from a bitch who study in UK....or known well in malaysia as 'UJUNG KETIAK'...HAHAHAHA....can you explain briefly to me if we have a larger submarine compare to other countries......and when i see other countries submarine....and i can clearly see that they have a larger submarine.....BUT.....most of it were destroyed during patrol activity.....isnt that called improvement in technology....hahahahaha..+_+

...went overseas and chose to stat abroad and refuse to come back. If the government really treated all raceds equally and be fair to everybody, do you think this kind of thing would happen?
Most of the time is the people with high post saying all thess slogan and they themself failed to practise what they say..
Those days of our fore fathers, all races got along well without the need of any slogan, and now,what? with all the slogan but the people are still not united? isnt it alittle stupid?

the mom has her point there, other races hardly get to shine in malaysia if you really survey on it.. There are so many malaysians that were not well treated here in malaysia went overseas and shined so brightly. You get promoted depends on how well you perform in your careers, regardless of your background, your race or even your beliefs.
There is no need to argue over this issue, it is like an open secret to everybody in this country, isnt it? just look at the data of m'sian student who...

I think this short clips best describes the real issue is not race, but class and status. In politics, people are divided by class and status and not race, unfortunately, certain race falls in that low status while others are different. If people can actually understand this, they certainly will demand social progression and how to distribute equal opportunities to everyone to climb up the social ladder. But here, it seems other wise, the government rejects the best... and they go to Singapore, British, Australia.... the government in these country's immediately offer scholarship++ to get hold of these people...
but our government rejects them.

sorry to disappoint you but, I was the top student in my school. nothing to be proud of because it was a SMK after all.
And sorry to disappoint you again, that British University offers scholarship to anyone who gets a certain result and for malaysian 10As and above.
Unlike malaysia who claims to give to everyone who gets more than 9As but is purely bullshit. the system is still there to limit those that really deserve it.

and that piece of shit has 5As less than what I have. And fuck off if you want to say i don;t have co-curriculum marks cause i represent my state scouts team twice and represented in chess and many other things which are now useless. and for you stupid information, I am the head prefect in my school and got a 8.9 for co-co.
