this is your captain speaking, to those of you over the wing, i hoped you like our fireworks and missile launching system... no slowly close those blinds and don't look again.
If you look out of the left window you can just about see the coast of France. If you look out of the right window you can see number 3 engine violently implode, blade by blade. Thank you for flying Ryanair. We hope you reach your destination.....
@iToasterman It didn't fail any test; they detonated an explosive inside the engine to force blades to break. The point of the test, like you said, is to make sure shrapnel doesn't shoot out of the sides of the engine, because that can sever hydraulic lines and all sorts of other bad things.
Also wrong. They didn't fire anything into the engine. If you look closely, you can see that one of the fan blades is painted orange - that blade was fitted with explosive bolts and purposely blown off the fan for the test.
@petershen1984 Not true, this is a test for fan blades, which should be contained. On the Qantas what failed was a turbine blade, which will not be contained. So what kept the Qantas safe was the segregation of the hydraulic systems.
@spursfan1977 Im not sure about the engine casing, but for the quantas incident ended up being taken as a serious incident and yes there was an investigation
@legox50 No this test was successful. The blade had a little explosive charge to break it to see the effects a broken blade has. Regulations are stating that in no circumstances any material may be thrown out of the engine. Imagine a blade being shot at the fuselage... But as you can see, no parts are thrown out of the engine. The engine stops and even the fire does not propagate. Full success.
If it's true that the engine is suppose to fall of when it literally explodes witch i don't beleive, don't forget your helmet when you go out just in case jet engine comes flying without an airplane he he he
what they did for this is is attach a small detonator to the fan and set it off. the outer casing is supposed to contain any flyin chunks of metal, so it doesnt hit or damage the fuselage
thank god they do this testing on the ground and not attached to an aircraft flying at 30 000 feet. the vibration would be enough to rip it from the wing

Well, when the voice counts down, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Fire. It pretty much says it all, they were intentionally "blowing up" the engine.
duski1966 1 year ago
@duski1966 wrong. they fired a bird into it. explosion was not supposed to hapepen. engine was supposded to withstand the bird hit.

this is what kept the quantas airplane safe, despite that metal shards blew through the wings..

@jkyet i was under the impression that any escape is a major problem and a full investigation. the test also checks engine casing does it not?

hardtop123 2 years ago
probly not rip the wing off, most airplanes now let the engine basically drop off from its wing fixing points when subject to fierce vibration
mrroby123 2 years ago 2
Are you sure of that ?? What happen then to the 7 tons of steal falling on our heads ???
