I had mentioned in a previous post the Glynbourne production which I have now seen. It is very interesting and quite creative making use of contemporary problems around junk food and obesity. An interesting link. Unfortunately I do not have the DVD yet.
I have not seen the new met production. I used to take my children to see it every year when they were younger. I am curious to see the one they did in Glynbourne. It is part of the opera series that we get here and watch in movie theatres.
It is the sense of protective canopy the 14 angels provide the two children along with Humperdinks incredible music that appeals to me and I hope all children young and old.
You are right, but listen to the music: You can hear the angels descending two by two - and here the production is a bit confusing and disregarding to the composer. I only knew the MET production by radio and saw some pictures. Therfore:Thank You very much. Do You have some other scenes? cuckoo? Gingerbread House?
Hansel should have known how to sign the holy cross. And why there are no golden stairs? Therefore the whole choreography of the pantominme does not fit to the score, Nevertheless better than these awful new productions, like Covent Garden, Dresden.

The new production (Dec 2008) at Covent Garden was one of the most genuinely moving productions of H and G that i have ever seen. Humour, terror, good, evil, child neglect and abuse all well portrayed without a gram of saccharin. Go and see it when it is revived. The 'angels' in this typically overblown Met production look as though they failed auditions for the Statue of Liberty!
These MET angels are better than the Chipmunks at Covent Garden, the Clowns at Berlin, the moving trees at Bonn, the Teddy Bears at Augsburg or the Zombies at Dresden. Humperdinck never thought about such nonsense, that is the directors to decide. Awful Regietheater-Shit!
I have banished this shit from my mind. Never thought, that the european Regietheater will blow through the american theatres. Horror! In Germany, there is not one opera house left, that dares to offend against this tyranny.

Watched this production as a child in the late 80s. I owned the VHS. This scene still fills me with wonder everytime I watch it.

There is a DVD of this quite readily available. You can also find it on VHS tape. Try searching under Hansel and Gretel Blegen von Stade
