  • Had both 45's of this song Four Tops & Johnny Rivers loved them both played them all the time.

  • awesome!

  • Both versions of this song are wonderful.. Four Tops and Johnny Rivers. Blessed are both of them for their talent..

  • Johnny is one soulful white dude...

  • This song has been stuck in my head 4 the past 2 days !!

    In a good way

I've replayed it a million times

I know I've heard this song in a movie but I can't remember which one

  • Johnny Rivers vocal signature is fantastic, one of the all time greats!

  • A wonderful song.

The last part, when the sound goes away... I wish it goes on forever. I think I could stay here, listening that moment of great music for the rest of my life....

  • The backing vocals really add to this song. The female touch is an effective contrast to the Johnny Rivers belting lead.

Thanks for the post-great HD quality sound.

  • You're welcome, helios1912-san!!

  • @helios1912 ... The back-up vocals are The Blossoms (Fannita James,

Jeanie King, and Darlene Love). That's Darlene gospel wailing toward

the end of the song. The Blossoms were a hit-making group also as was

Darlene solo, via Phil Spector. Tthey were among the most in-demand

session singers throughout the '60s and '70s for recordings and TV. In

studio recordings, they were 2nd in demand only to The Sweet Inspirations,

led by Cissy Houston (Whitney's mother). An era gone...

  • @SouLoveReal --thanks for the reply and passing along this info. Yes, Darlene Love-such a distinctive voice. I remember first hearing this Rivers cover and those backing vocals really grabbed me--I was concentrating on Johnny's lead, and, then, whoa, listen up, simmering backing vocals!

  • @helios1912

    good point....the background or

vocals are important in most great music...

  • his version of the 4tops tune is amazing.also his 'rewind' album is one of his best work.thanks for posting this one

  • I Love this Song and it is so great i cannot express it in words

  • OOOOOOO YEEAAH!!!!!!! Sexy, such emotion in his voice! Yeah!! Yeah!! I like me some Johnny!!!

  • JR was the best....i'm 60 now and this tune still reaches out and tells it like it is.

  • I love this song better than the 4 tops,I thought JR was the original one who sings this song. I was in love with the girl but I don't think she likes me a bit so I keep playing this song

  • @Panchitobear

the four tops recorded this song in 1964, JR in 1967. In my opinion the version of Jr is too melodic and the original version, the one of the four tops..it's the best one.

  • Johnny Rivers was able to take The 4 Tops great hit and make not just a cover but a great reworked versio. Both recordings are great.

  • One of his very BEST thanks

  • The Four Tops did this song first in 1964, and then Johnny Rivers in 1967. Between the Four Tops' song and this song, I actually LOVE both of them!

  • From his "Motown" period--this and his cover of "Tracks of my Tears" are as good as any ever done...

  • Such a desperate plea from his soul to the one he loves. Sing it Johnny.

  • Johnny is a Baton Rouge boy; and we love him here! Thanks so much for this great post!
