OK CIWS is NOT stationed below deck, Im pretty sure that you need to know what you are talking about before you run your mouth. anyway,Im pretty sure on all the ships Ive been on in MY NAVY career have CIWS at one of the highest points on the ship, IE the 04 level on a CG class.
He's saying that the CIWS radar cannot track at or below the horizon due to RADAR clutter and thus cannot ebgagae targets below 0* (angle of the horizon)
Of course that may be true of older variants (I'm no expert here) however current variants are also equipped with FLIR allowing it to engage low-flying and surface targets. Since the engagement rules are all coded in the software, it wouldn't be a stretch to make it engage non-direct inbounds. ;)
This is the navy's worst nightmare. We can't engage it, CIWS only tracks and engages DIRECT threats, IE, when a missile is DIRECTLY inbound CIWS tracks to Destroy it. This missile turns and is no longer a threat to CIWS. Then it comes inbound again and then turns ect. Then it goes up, then straight down on top. Not good enough to win the Falklands War. The British had their own Exocets and reverse-engineered them. So if more arrived from France, they would not have worked because the Royal Navy already figured out how to stop them after Argentina used the few missiles it had. So the Royal Navy ordered Harpoon missiles and Phalanx systems afterwards. Thanks to France, the USA made a huge arms sale!

The only advantage of Harpoons compared to Exocets is they are cheaper. Except it I can't tell you an other advantage.

KlubMarcus,the Royal Navy didn't figure out how to stop Exocet missiles.President of France François Mitterrand gave full support to the UK in the Falklands war.Sir John Nott, who was Secretary of State for Defence during the conflict,has acknowledged in his memoirs that "In so many ways Mitterrand and the French were our greatest allies".A large part of Argentina's military equipment was French-made,so French support was crucial.

exotecs are french, but i think russians produce them and sell them to iran. But sunburn and yakhton are much more advanced than exotec. US phalanx system can prevent exotec, but can't stop the others.

Yeah, and the USSR collapsed and Russia is a much smaller and weaker nation, weak economically, and a population half the size of the USA and dropping. Sounds like they got beat because the Russian Navy is rusting at port and is unable to use their Sunburns. So they have to sell to lesser navies around the world who are going to get mauled by the USA.

No, the Russians do not produce the Exocet, it's French. Damn, you're ignorant! No, the Sunburn and Yakhont are not more advanced. They are just faster. The US Navy uses Harpoon missiles to sink the enemy ships that carry supersonic missiles because they don't have aircraft carriers with enough fighters to stop the air assault. So the US just launches cheap Harpoons over an over again until they are sunk.

do u know what ur talkign about? first i never said exotec is russian. i said the sunburn and yakhton are. and the yakhton can cover the entire persian gulf and be fired from land. Any US ship in the gulf is vulnerable, and phalanx and harpoon CANNOT stop it.

Sir John has revealed that France provided Mirage and Etendard aircraft, identical to the ones that it supplied to Argentina, for British pilots to train against. It is also disclosed in Sir John's memoirs that France provided intelligence to help fight the Exocet missiles that it had sold to Argentina, including details of special electronic countermeasures that at the time were only known to the French armed forces.

that is so, but the french also told the argentinians about the gap in radar defences when using the satcom system to transmit. most of the excocet attacks against the task force seemed to occur around the scheduled TX times. Typical dirty french trick.

My coments were basd on facts; yours are based on pure French bashing stupidity ("Typical dirty French trick). France found herself in a bit of a predicament indeed, having Argentina as a customer, but Mitterrand quickly chose his side by helping Britain. Had the French helped the Argitinians on that one, I doubt VERY MUCH that Thatcher would have Thanked us for that. Think.

he did not choose from his own volition, there was pressure put on him from Thatcher as well as other eec member states. The fact was that france had to be coerced into delaying the completion of a delivery contract of exocets to argentina because of the anger that would be aroused if an EEC member state AND a member of NATO assisted a hostile force against another member within NATO.The information about the radar gap came from an officer serving on one of HM Navy task force vessels.
