I will never understand why Slade never became one of the biggest bands. Noddy had a voice as good as Plant. They were as raw sounding as AC/DC, and could still do great lighter songs. They had a stage show as good as any band. Is slade even in The Rock n Roll hall of fame yet?

My favourite band when I was in junior school. Saw em at the Blackpool Punk fest a few years ago. Loadsa Punks and skins were Slade fans when they were younger. They brought it all back.
this may look old and dated to the youth of today....but trust me...SLADE were a real force to be reckoned with, especially LIVE......their gigs were a true 'EVENT'..a real spectacle...they were REAL showmen and insisted that every menber of the audience participated in having a GREAT time...they always worked the crowd and REALLY looked like they enjoyed every minute...I feel so honoured I was a part of the SLADE era.......

Hi carl, "best rock voice ever" is debatable as that's a personal opinion but great voice - undeniable. I think we differ on opinion as I love a good rock band that keeps trucking along and moves with the times. Apart from the christmas stuff Slade are locked (unfortunately) in the 70's. @proslade Plus, Jim Lea was a music genius. He could play literally all kinds of instruments, violin, piano, guitars, you name it. Dave Hill was the "clown" , and Don Powell behind the drums, always looking SO cool, always chewing his gum. I loved Slade, and I still do :-D

Anyway, they didn´t care about not being "recognized", I think. They played because they had fun, especially regarding Noddy and Dave, they always looked SO happy. Makes me happy watching them :-D

It seems that the (supurb) swing version of My o My was done by Noddy in one take after an evening in the pub. I have laughed so much about these guys. Slade had the completest packake of all bands, if it comes to number of real tunes in the largest variety of pop-rock styles, incuding classic, jazz, complete anthem style songs etc. and Jim Lea and Noddy Holder are the only match for McCarnney-Lennon regarding songwriting. Plus, I also consider Noddy the most versatile and spactacular rock voice ever, and most amazingly his ability to sing classical # Kill em at the hot Club tonite, Pity the Mother, Find yourself a rainbow....

I will never understand why Slade never became one of the biggest bands. Noddy had a voice as good as Plant. They were as raw sounding as AC/DC, and could still do great lighter songs. They had a stage show as good as any band. Is slade even in The Rock n Roll hall of fame yet?

Real kick-ass powertunes, diversity in pop and rock styles, massive live show, influential; one of the truly greatest and most versatile bands ever. The negative media in the late seventies are part of the blame. Also, the US market in the 70s was too conservative for their flamboyant image. They were labelled as just "Glam" which was considered "gay"

Slade was funny hats, and jump suits. My favourite band when I was in junior school. Saw em at the Blackpool Punk fest a few years ago. Loadsa Punks and skins were Slade fans when they were younger. They brought it all back.

this may look old and dated to the youth of today....but trust me...SLADE were a real force to be reckoned with, especially LIVE......their gigs were a true 'EVENT'..a real spectacle...they were REAL showmen and insisted that every menber of the audience participated in having a GREAT time...they always worked the crowd and REALLY looked like they enjoyed every minute...I feel so honoured I was a part of the SLADE era.......

Hi carl, "best rock voice ever" is debatable as that's a personal opinion but great voice - undeniable. I think we differ on opinion as I love a good rock band that keeps trucking along and moves with the times. Apart from the christmas stuff Slade are locked (unfortunately) in the 70's. Great music to revisit tho. Bestest x

And didn t AC/DC sound about the same for 20 or 30 years, just like Led Zep, Purps, the Stones who repeated themselves in the seventies and later etc.??? I think Slade really progressed and diversified up until the late eighties; I think this fact has been almost entirely overlooked. For me, Slade are the best and most versatile band ever.

Slade made real tunes in many pop/rock styles, Zep and AC/DC are/were onedimensional, made pieces of rock music, but generally not real tunes; plus they have never really evolved, something Slade has done. If you have listened to all their albums up to 87, you will agree. Plus live Slade were incredible. Slade are one of 3 best bands in the history of pop, hands down

@proslade Plus, Jim Lea was a music genius. He could play literally all kinds of instruments, violin, piano, guitars, you name it. Dave Hill was the "clown" , and Don Powell behind the drums, always looking SO cool, always chewing his gum. I loved Slade, and I still do :-D

@nuggigandalf Agreed, but Dave was and is a mastercraftsman, what guitar could he NOT play? Plus he wrote the guitar lines for "Lay your love on the line", yet another lost piece of genius. I simply do not understand why Slade have never been recognized as one of the best and versatile bands ever and why Jim is never recognized as a musical genius. It seems that you have to pretend a genius or as some kind of melogomane like Bowie to be percepted as such. The snotty media did not help either.

@proslade I totally agree, when I described Dave as the "clown", it was merely because of his acting on the stage, his weird costumes etc. No doubt he was a very clever guitar-player, even though not at the same level as Jim, who, as I remember, holds an education in classic music (?).
Anyway, they didn´t care about not being "recognized", I think. They played because they had fun, especially regarding Noddy and Dave, they always looked SO happy. Makes me happy watching them :-D

@nuggigandalf You are so right there, they always laughed on stage. I would not be surprised if they would sometimes go to the pub before going into the studio. It seems that the (supurb) swing version of My o My was done by Noddy in one take after an evening in the pub. I have laughed so much about these guys. I can understand why their image has masked their true brilliance.... That Kamikaze and Rogues Gallery.....superlatives don t cover it........ none of these "pretenders" comes even close.
