i bought a 32 gig Cowon S9 today. it doesnt even work. It keeps freezing and I have to reset it. None of the songs i loaded onto it work, the recorder doesnt work. it sucks! im so disappointed cuz i wanted it for months! and when i finally got it, it doesnt even work. i dont know if i should exchange it for another S9 or just get an ipod touch :-(

try formatting the s9 on a pc or try the new firmware. if that doesnt work check the forum(i can send you the link). people there can usually help you with that stuff. let me know.

You have to make sure utf-8 is setup when using linux hence why it fronze on you, it's a known problem something to do with it uploading unnecessary files to the player.

I have mine since a few month now battery holds like 48 hours with EQ. Sound quality is brilliant much better than my privious iPod and never freezed so far. I uploaded all my music at once to the plaec means like 25 gb at once( still habe more but jsut my favourites first).

lol@a monday model. thats a good one. im sure the cowon s9 is still a great device when its working. but im so addicted to ipod touch apps now, i cant imagine having anything else. "Tap Tap Revenge" is like electronic crack! lol

You know what sucks about this? The lock is on one end, and the play/pause is on the complete opposite end. If I want to pause the music without taking the device out of my pocket, that leaves me sorta fucked, doesn't it? You'd think the designers would have more sympathy for the gadget-loving working man.

Anyhoo, There is an option on the Cowon S9, and other Cowons, where Locking the Cowon would Only turn off the screen and keep the side buttons functioning.

Isn't that worse? I want to be able to stop and start the music from within my pocket without having to turn the device over to unlock it. And no, I don't own an S9, although I will probably invest in one when my current player dies.

I run often with my s9. This is what I do to change songs/volume..

The side with the earphone jack+hold/power is towards the opening of the pocket. When whenever I want to change songs, Instead of reaching into the pocket...I press the button from outside the pocket... Therefore I don't ever have to reach into my pocket nor flip the player around.

Anyhoo, i rarely need to change the song or volume.

Fair review of the Cowon S9 but I would add Cowon update their firmware every month with very nice patches and functionality updates, I love my S9 would never get anything other than Cowon PMP/MP3 players.

You can transcode with jet audio and there's no discernible loss in quality.

h264 would take far too much processing power, and before you mention the ipod not even that plays true hd.

@huxley309 How does that work exactly? Is that directly on the player? If I import an m4a file, will it transcode on the spot to uncompressed without me even knowing?

@Typhoon792 The player won't transcode no all it changes is how the player is recognised when you plug it in, the normal mtp causes problems with linux.

As for jet audio i have heard of people transcoding m4a into aac and mp3, i don't know of the id3 tag remains plus i haven't tried it, the iaudiophile forums can help you there.

Sound enthusiast's go for the Cowon S9 where as main consumers go for the apple as he said, personally having my S9 I'd never go to the apple again because the sound quality with a decent pair of IEM's is phenominal when using BBE+ enhancements.

I agree, I am using a Cowon Iaudio9 with a pair of Sennheisers Hd 598 headphones and the audio quality is to die for, I dislike the Iaudio9's clunky interface but the sound quality is awesome.

No it isn't, it's a typical korean interface made for their own market where as the iPod is made for the US/Western market.

The only reason people think everyone is ripping off iPod is because apple decided to go with an incredibly simple design which means anyone going for anything similar get's ripped into.

I stopped listening to Gadget show reviews ages ago since they deemed the iPod the best mp3 player simply because of it's looks.
