The external fuel tanks were dropped too late in to the fight. If you want to dodge or outmaneuver a missile you want your plane to be as maneuverable as possible and external fuel tanks kind of restrict that.

yeah they accually show what they are trained to do is out turn the Sam and out last. Sams travel at mach 2.5 - mach 4. (some might be faster by now.) They dump fuel fast to make that speed, and still destroy the target. Total unrealistic to have a sam track for that long.

The sam missiles are far from realistic. It should be only few seconds for the pilot between get the threaten and the encounter the missile. Then, hit or miss. A missile can not approach the target time and time again.

The f-18 is supersonic so i guess it's possible for it to outrun it but if you look at the video, they aren't trying to out run the missile, they are trying to outmaneuver it to break the lock. because if they just go in a straight line the missile will eventually catch up to them

F-18 may be supersonic but it can never outrun a missile. The only chance is to outmaneuver it or deploy flares to decoy it. Although it's a great scene for a movie and don't think in a real engagement the pilots would have acted the same way. Those things have proximity fuses and it would be impossible to make a head on pass at such a close range (the missile actually hit the plane) without it exploding.

Super Hornets first flight>'95, service>'00, combat ready(pilots trained)>'01/'02, Bosnian war>'96/'99. Heat missiles cant turn around.
