  • RIP. I grew up with his voice and it will never be the same without it.

  • Pens hockey isn't the same without you!! RIP John Barbaro

  • John, you were THE voice of the Civic Arena. God Bless Your Soul, and forever a piece of Pittsburgh sports history. Hope you and Badger Bob loved the victory back in 2009. We love you John.

  • R.I.P.

  • We miss you john.

  • Its beyond words how much I miss hearing John Barbaro's voice compliment the Penguins. Hands down he was the greatest announcer to ever bless the Civic Arena and its fans. Hell, I'd imitate the guy in the shower as a kid and my parents would yell at me. When he mentions how much he wants to announce the Pens winning a cup in civic arena, thats tough to hear. Now... I just got home from a game 7 loss to the Tampa Bay Lighting, and I'm personally blaming the Power Ball Power Play guy. He must die

  • John was the best me and my 3 brothers used to imitate him all the time. Will miss him, I wonder if he will announce Marios name in heaven, "welcome to heaven number 66 Mario Lemieuxxxxxxxxx!"

  • 65 years old he was, thats still young. hate the pens but always like the way he annouced goals. havent heard the new guys.

  • @bryan1282 The new guy sucks.

  • I'm not a huge fan but I watch Pens game once in a while and wondered why he wasn't announcing this season. Know now. RIP these current guy sucks!

  • The new guy sucks ass!!! John barbaro FTW

  • RIP

  • john barbaro had to be the best pa announcer in the nhl.not just bc of the excitement he put into the way he announced the pens goal scorers.the way he announced the visitors too.you never heard him botch an opposing players last name.he was always quick to tell you things that i don't hear other pa announcers say i.e when it's there first of their nhl career,or when the opposition gets a milestone in pts.the new dude i don't like at all,and it's only bc john was so brilliant.

  • voice of God

  • lets not go overboard....bob sheppard has that claim!

  • He'll always be the voice I remember when I look back on the games I went to as a kid. RIP

  • he wil never be replaced

  • "The Pittsburgh goal was scored by number 66, Mario Lemieoooooooooooooooooo...."

  • RIP Principal Barbero, such a great man everyone who loves him for him being the pens pa announcer would of loved him even more if he was your principal like he was to me but even him just being that to you know what a great man he was

  • i remember his voice attending the penguin games. r.i.p. mr. barbaro.

  • Sometimes you take things for granted.

<3 Mr. Barbero. Thanks for the sounds.

  • It's hard to wrap my head around the idea that within such a short period of time the Civic Arena has became a relic of the past, and we've lost John Barbaro and Vince Lascheid. Those days are gone forever, but I'll also never forget.

  • It is a sad day in Pittsburgh Hockey, RIP Mr. Barbero

  • RIP Mr. Barbaro. You will be missed.

  • RIP, John!! Call those goals in the sky!

  • Rest in peace from a Rangers fan. Thoughts to you and your family.

  • R.I.P. MR BARBARO,YOU WILL BE MISSED.

  • most of you know mr. barbaro as the voice behind the penguins, but John was more than that to many of the people where im from. He was a great man and a marvelous educator. As my high school principle, John made my time in high school some of the best years of my life. RIP Mr. Barbaro. . . you are and will always be missed and loved!

  • R.I.P he will be missed

  • R.I.P, We will miss you Johnny... <3

  • Best ever RIPJohn Barbaro.

  • John Barbero was one of the good ones. I would love to see the Penquins honor him by having putting him in the hall of fame, having the WCHS band come and play, having a red and black day - or something really cool like that. Great guy, he will be thought of fondly.

  • RIP John. We'll miss that voice.

  • Mellon Arena, John Barbaro - Rest in peace, you'll both stay in our hearts.

  • RIP John :(

  • R.I.P. John Barbaro... such a sad time for the Penguins, and a huge loss for the NHL. He will be missed.

  • thats kind of a sad ending at the end of this clip that he said his last wish was to announce the stanley cup clincher which again, he wasnt able to do since the Pens won the 3rd one on the road too.

    RIP John.

I always got chills the way Lemieux's name was called.

THE PITTSBURGH GOAL, A POWER PLAY GOAL, HIS 50TH OF THE SEASON, SCORED BY NUMBER 66, MARIOOO LEMIEEEUUUUXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!!!

  • Please come back, Barbero! This current guy, Ryan Mill is a hack! Can't stand this monster truck style announcing.

  • i say he should announce the last game at the mellon arena

  • I wouldn't say the new PA announcer "blows," but he is no John Barbaro.

The new Pirates play-by-play announcer. That is another story. I used to watch Pirate games because even though they were bad, Lanny was entertaining. Now it is bad baseball with boring announcing.

  • i would love to hear him announce the stanley cup win. i'm praying for you buddy and i guarantee the entire penguin fanbase is also. get well

  • Get well, John...The Mellon Arena isn't the same w/out you. Bad enough we lost Vince LaScheid (sp?) last year, we don't want to lose you as well!!

  • that new pa guy blows

  • By the way, does anyone know how old he is by any chance?

  • dont count John out yet. As much as that guy loves the Penguins, well, sometimes miracles happen to great people, people who deserve. As loyal as this guy has been, I pray to god that we hear him at Mellon Arena again.

  • No way the Pens are making the playoffs this year without Barbero.

In all seriousness though, I really hope he gets better. Penguins games aren't the same without him, and he seems like a great guy.

  • Never thought I would say this , I have been going to Penguin games since 1972...something is missing in the arena this year, the atmosphere seems different, when you heard John Barbaros voice you knew it was a Penguin game in the Civic or Mellon Arena....He is a staple like the P.A. guys in Edmonton, Toronto, Los Angeles, Montreal, and the old Chicago Stadium.....Get Well John, aka "The Voice of the South Hills"..

  • Come back John the new P.A. announcer sucks

  • will he be back? please answer! thank you go pens

  • probably not. He is very ill right now with a brain tumor. Who knows, maybe one day he'll be able to make it back.

  • @TheT4xid3rmist

Oh no! I was wondering what was happening! Am very sorry to find out!

Best wishes John from the PA voice of Manitoba Bisons University Hockey team.

  • I applied for the secondary PA position but the Pens said I didn't have the experience they were looking for. maybe some day...

  • he was my principal in high school my freshmen year and hes one of the nicest people ive ever met, he would always talk to me about basketball, even when i saw him after he retired as principle he knew how i did. he actually cared about his students. im gonna pray like crazy for him so he can announce again and we can all be soothed by his voice.

  • I hope he gets better :-(

  • i started crying when i heard he wasnt coming back! the new announcer is terrible

  • Its depressing..i love his voice

  • if you havn't heard... John has a brain tumor. unfortunately he will no longer be the announcer. John is my neighbor, and it is sad to watch this because i know how much he loved the pens, and the whole organization. he really did want to announce @ the new arena.

  • i hope he gets to call a Stanley Cup at home.... what an appropriate sendoff that would be for the Civic Arena this year

  • great guy =)

  • A wonderful announcer and a great human being. It is a treat for Penguins fans who have been listening to him for more than 30 years. He is a guy that gets just as fired up for a game as anyone in the building. In a loss he takes it as personally as the players do.

  • a pleasure to listen to when the Penguins light the lamp. A great announcer!!!!

  • The best PA announcer in The NHL.

  • mhmmm hands down =)

  • proves how bad mellon arena is..

  • Yeah. Paul McCall with the Predators is pretty good too. And you can tell he loves the game by just talking with him. He's a voice you hardly ever hear about.

  • Went to HS with his daughter & his wife was a teacher there too. Serious P.O.A's (pieces of ass) They both looked exactly alike. He seriously overkicked his coverage with that wife.

  • When he referred to a Stanley Cup win in Pittsburgh, he was referring to a PENGUINS Stanley Cup win in Pittsburgh. He's got to come back and call more Pens games until they win the cup at home, then he'll probably retire. I'd like to see him call his 1000th Pens game.

  • This guy would sound vibrant at a funeral.

  • well his dream came true however when the red wing won the stanley cup unfourtionaly not the pens but there always next year

  • He is a great PA announcer

  • who sounds the goal horn anyone kno who does it a pens games???

  • Why don't they just move the chair?

  • yea, such a familiar voice down @ the Igloo

  • heis the VOICE OF THE SOUTH HILLS!! @ PENGUIN GAMES.He ranks up there with the Edmonton guy, Vancouver guy who sounds like Don Pardo, the Flyers guy, and the LA Kings guy, all have distinct voice..Cheers John..One of the Best!!

  • John Barbero was my high school principal, awesome guy!

  • John Barbaro is the greatest PA announcer ever. His voice on Sid's goals or when Mario played would send chills down you spine. I love this guy

  • I would like to meet this man. Such an incredible force. Also, the Bucco's announcer Tim Debacco isn't too shabby either

  • i want his job

  • My bro and I used to get a giant kick out of John announcing goals at the Arena where Orest Kindrachuk would get an assist... he'd say "from KINdrachuk!" with a lot of lift in his voice. He's one of a kind. :)

  • good story :-)

  • I'm wondering how different it will sound starting in 2009, when the new arena is in place... the Mellon Arena just has that unique echo to it, in my opinion...

  • I hope the designers build something that will do the same thing. I've heard that if you're driving by the arena when the Pens score, you can hear it. How awesome! I've always liked how he starts the goal announcements with "The Pittsburgh goal...!"

  • John Barbaro is legend of Pittsburgh Penguin hockey.

  • I wanna be the guy who blows that amazing goal horn! Seriously, im not lying either.

  • i wonder who sounds the goal horn, i noticed it wasn't john in that clip when the pens scored...
