John, you were THE voice of the Civic Arena. God Bless Your Soul, and forever a piece of Pittsburgh sports history. Hope you and Badger Bob loved the victory back in 2009. We love you John.
Its beyond words how much I miss hearing John Barbaro's voice compliment the Penguins. Hands down he was the greatest announcer to ever bless the Civic Arena and its fans. Hell, I'd imitate the guy in the shower as a kid and my parents would yell at me. When he mentions how much he wants to announce the Pens winning a cup in civic arena, thats tough to hear. Now... I just got home from a game 7 loss to the Tampa Bay Lighting, and I'm personally blaming the Power Ball Power Play guy. He must die
John was the best me and my 3 brothers used to imitate him all the time. Will miss him, I wonder if he will announce Marios name in heaven, "welcome to heaven number 66 Mario Lemieuxxxxxxxxx!"
john barbaro had to be the best pa announcer in the nhl.not just bc of the excitement he put into the way he announced the pens goal scorers.the way he announced the visitors too.you never heard him botch an opposing players last name.he was always quick to tell you things that i don't hear other pa announcers say i.e when it's there first of their nhl career,or when the opposition gets a milestone in pts.the new dude i don't like at all,and it's only bc john was so brilliant.
RIP Principal Barbero, such a great man everyone who loves him for him being the pens pa announcer would of loved him even more if he was your principal like he was to me but even him just being that to you know what a great man he was
It's hard to wrap my head around the idea that within such a short period of time the Civic Arena has became a relic of the past, and we've lost John Barbaro and Vince Lascheid. Those days are gone forever, but I'll also never forget.
most of you know mr. barbaro as the voice behind the penguins, but John was more than that to many of the people where im from. He was a great man and a marvelous educator. As my high school principle, John made my time in high school some of the best years of my life. RIP Mr. Barbaro. . . you are and will always be missed and loved!
John Barbero was one of the good ones. I would love to see the Penquins honor him by having putting him in the hall of fame, having the WCHS band come and play, having a red and black day - or something really cool like that. Great guy, he will be thought of fondly.
thats kind of a sad ending at the end of this clip that he said his last wish was to announce the stanley cup clincher which again, he wasnt able to do since the Pens won the 3rd one on the road too.
RIP John.
I always got chills the way Lemieux's name was called.
THE PITTSBURGH GOAL, A POWER PLAY GOAL, HIS 50TH OF THE SEASON, SCORED BY NUMBER 66, MARIOOO LEMIEEEUUUUXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!!!
RIP John... I am going to miss you... The Pens got you the cup on my birthday..I am sad to learn that you passed. You are going to be deeply missed... I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers...
Truly an honor and a blessing to be able to spend 18 years of my life going to the Igloo and hearing John call goals by Lemieux and Crosby...this is a sad day for me and for Pittsburgh, tomorrow it will sink in...RIP John Barbero 1945-2010
I wouldn't say the new PA announcer "blows," but he is no John Barbaro.
The new Pirates play-by-play announcer. That is another story. I used to watch Pirate games because even though they were bad, Lanny was entertaining. Now it is bad baseball with boring announcing.
dont count John out yet. As much as that guy loves the Penguins, well, sometimes miracles happen to great people, people who deserve. As loyal as this guy has been, I pray to god that we hear him at Mellon Arena again.
Never thought I would say this , I have been going to Penguin games since 1972...something is missing in the arena this year, the atmosphere seems different, when you heard John Barbaros voice you knew it was a Penguin game in the Civic or Mellon Arena....He is a staple like the P.A. guys in Edmonton, Toronto, Los Angeles, Montreal, and the old Chicago Stadium.....Get Well John, aka "The Voice of the South Hills"..
he was my principal in high school my freshmen year and hes one of the nicest people ive ever met, he would always talk to me about basketball, even when i saw him after he retired as principle he knew how i did. he actually cared about his students. im gonna pray like crazy for him so he can announce again and we can all be soothed by his voice.
if you havn't heard... John has a brain tumor. unfortunately he will no longer be the announcer. John is my neighbor, and it is sad to watch this because i know how much he loved the pens, and the whole organization. he really did want to announce @ the new arena.
A wonderful announcer and a great human being. It is a treat for Penguins fans who have been listening to him for more than 30 years. He is a guy that gets just as fired up for a game as anyone in the building. In a loss he takes it as personally as the players do.
Yeah. Paul McCall with the Predators is pretty good too. And you can tell he loves the game by just talking with him. He's a voice you hardly ever hear about.
Went to HS with his daughter & his wife was a teacher there too. Serious P.O.A's (pieces of ass) They both looked exactly alike. He seriously overkicked his coverage with that wife.
When he referred to a Stanley Cup win in Pittsburgh, he was referring to a PENGUINS Stanley Cup win in Pittsburgh. He's got to come back and call more Pens games until they win the cup at home, then he'll probably retire. I'd like to see him call his 1000th Pens game.
heis the VOICE OF THE SOUTH HILLS!! @ PENGUIN GAMES.He ranks up there with the Edmonton guy, Vancouver guy who sounds like Don Pardo, the Flyers guy, and the LA Kings guy, all have distinct voice..Cheers John..One of the Best!!
My bro and I used to get a giant kick out of John announcing goals at the Arena where Orest Kindrachuk would get an assist... he'd say "from KINdrachuk!" with a lot of lift in his voice. He's one of a kind. :)
I'm wondering how different it will sound starting in 2009, when the new arena is in place... the Mellon Arena just has that unique echo to it, in my opinion...
I hope the designers build something that will do the same thing. I've heard that if you're driving by the arena when the Pens score, you can hear it. How awesome! I've always liked how he starts the goal announcements with "The Pittsburgh goal...!"
RIP. I grew up with his voice and it will never be the same without it.
