  • @Grayson412 clawhammer is for banjo players that are annoyed by the loud twang of bg banjo

  • I like this version of , Cripple Creek. It's quite a bit different than most.

  • @Grayson412 Clearly you are inbred and I shouldn't get irritated with you - it's not your fault. But . . . the plural (means more than one) of "pussy" is "pussies." See, now you can get back to trying to insult people without exposing the depths of your own ignorance. Have a great day!

  • @Grayson412 It's actually more like the other way around. Clawhammer is probably more than a hundred years older than the Scruggs style you're talking about. You are neither required to play any particular kind of music genre or style on the banjo; when using this instrument, everything you do is enjoyable. Go and watch some of Grandpa Jones' videos, and tell us what you think afterwards.

  • awesome job

  • One of my friend is at the hospital but he was often listening to your banjo saying it was magical, now, I believe him... I hope he get well soon!

  • @KaimaniaFly - Good banjo joke. I gotta remember that one.

  • You folks crack me up on what tuning it is in. It's in the key of Goob! Get y'er noses out of the book and just play.

  • Nice job. I love the clawhammer style of picking. Nice choice of song too. Thanks for sharing and God bless.

  • What kind of banjo is that?

  • Epiphone MB-250 built by Gibson. The same parts as the Gibson Mastertone. Got lucky and picked it up off ebay a few years back with the hard shell case for $150 when banjos weren't popular.Lowered the bridge/action and took off the resonator to give it a less twangy tone for clawhammer. I need to take off the flange.

  • Beautifully played. i am trying to learn banjo but with 2 missing fingers on my left and and 1 on my right. It's taking a while. Pray for me Rev!!!

  • I just got a banjo last week. This video is one of the reasons I chose clawhammer over BG. Thanks. Very well played. By the way, I hate you. I'll be back in my room practicing. Bum ditty. Bum ditty. Bum ditty. Bum ditty.

  • It took me forever to do the bum ditty as I was listening to instructional videos and that was messing me up. Don't over think it like I did, let it come natural and do not worry about style. Having your own style is what separates all musicians. Just think of the banjo as a drum and tap out a beat with your thumb first. A couple of shots of white liquor helped as well :) Good luck to you.

  • Very nicely played, sir! And you're clearly enjoying playing, which is great to see.

  • I've always wanted to play banjo but I've never actually had a chance to see how the hands move but it seems so fun o.o

  • Great! Lovely sound! :-D

  • One of the best clawhammer versions of Cripple Creek on YouTube.

    5 stars, nice job Rev.

  • Well its good but your way out buddy, Try to stick with G tunning, or A, A is good to but really try to stay with G I wish you luck God Bless

  • As long as he's in tune with himself it's fine really

It's traditional for this style of music to be a bit off, makes it sound more bluegrass in my opinion. not everything has to be textbook :)

  • Way outta what :) Musicians tune to each other not to an electronic tuner. Been playing music with others for over 30 years. Listen to my sawmill tuning of Cluck old Hen. That's a whole different sound. There is no tuning standard unless you are selling books or instrument tuners. There are also hundreds of tunings and styles for the banjo. That's the beauty of this instrument. Everyone has their own style and tunings. Feel the music not just "perfect" it.

  • Amen brotha!

  • @ReverendGoob While I like your free spirit attitude towards playing music, I'm not sure telling people to avoid a tuner is sound advice. Have fun with playing, get weird, but keep yourselves in tune, kids. Your music will sound better and your mandolin player won't have to take 10 minutes re-tuning to the inevitably wonky banjo every other song.

  • @joereadel I'm not saying to avoid tuning. As you can hear I am tuned to myself. If I were playing with others we would tune together. Using a tuner and tuning to a standard key is only a reference and not a rule. I got past that mentality years ago. ....oh I still have my tuning forks laying around somewhere ;) Maybe I should put in a refernece note at the beginning of my songs so folks can play along? Man, these vids are old...I need to put some more up.

  • Its definitely a different G than my banjo...

  • I love it

  • I think that's a little higher than G... Could it be?

  • love this!

  • Sacralidge! Claw on a resonator! Just kidding..I did the same thing. Now I have a Deering open back so I will go to heaven ..Nice Job Rev

  • Claw Hammer on a resonator! I play SCruggs style on my open back and get dissed all the time..Hehehehe Good to see you on here!

  • Luv your clawhammer style...

  • Yee Haaww!!

    Pass me da jug Bubba!

    Great playing!

  • Man I just keep coming back to this video. You owned that song and made it yours. I love how you make simple adjustments and give it an entirely new sound. Wish I could play that...

  • That metal hoop really adds tanginess to the open back, unless thats a resonator and I just made an idiot of myself haha

  • brilliant

  • beautiful

  • Great playing!

  • Sweet!

  • You play a mean banjo buddy!

  • Nice playin', nice scenery!
