Maybe Ratman IS dead. But in portal3, you end up in another sector of aperture, but instead of a portal gun, it's a time gun. And it has to do with the ship being saved with time travel, the ship that ratman mentions in his secret message.

Not only can you hear him in one of the dens, or see him briefly in the ending, but he restarted the life support for Chell after she was dragged back into Aperture Laboratories, but he didn't have access to the programs needed to set a date of awakening - Turrets blocked the way to that chamber, and Rattmann did try to sneak past them. He offered his reclaimed freedom and headed back into the (continiued)

But then again he was shot by the Turrets. So there could be no possible way he could have survived. But then again it shows that he made into the his bed. But, I can't help that he could be very welll alive as well. I assume that since the places he has been to required a portal gun half the time.

And i think i heard something about a ship in these voices, maybe it's together with the moby dick quote referring to the borealis dock. The Companion Cube was Burned and Charred meaning it went through the incinerator. Which is the same cube that Chell threw in the Incinerator so she can go to the next Test, in Portal 1.
