Very tight and fluid, I really like it! I doubt i think i can do better at all, check out my cover of rosanna if you feel like it. The rosanna shuffle is a bit tricky haha.
i quite like the variation on beat 4 of the shuffle as in hh sn sn, instead of hh hh sn, sounds even better in my opinion! great track and great cover!
@jasincarlin Hi man Iv been doing this grove for quite some years and think your way is cool..but as fare as snare's goes i had alot of trouble accenting the ghosts to make them stand out alittle more in the early days.. on a crappy pearl piccalo.
Then I bought a 13/5" DW costom and the accents were 100x better...LoL!
there's always the jeff porcaro version here on yt to study, jeff clearly illustrates the groove and where he got it from, try searching for jeff porcaro rosanna.
Nice playing though fella! I am not good at these types of grooves; more of a metal fella myself.
I'm studying your video (see, you're famous)...your ghost note count appears higher than how (at least I'm interpreting) your explanation...(to me) most of your ghost notes look more like a double stroke than a single stroke... are you using any bounce off the snare (to get a double stroke)?...can you put your playing in L/R notation?...
Hey Man...Once again, i apprieciate your interest in my take of rosanna. The best way to understand how im playing this groove is to watch my version of Home At Last by Steely Dan. Its a slower version of exactly what im doing here. But i'll take a shot at trying the notation in a way you'll understand.
RR*RR*R(RL) RR**R*RR*R(RL) ...*=ghost note. (RL) indicates that its a right and left flam. I hope that helps. Best of Luck
Thanks for the Roseanna lesson...you have confirmed what most of the videos have explained: it's an RRL, not an RLR...I find myself interpreting the triplet as LRR, and I start the first note of the verses/measures in this manner (although the triplet can "blend" both ways as you play it out in series...so I play it (l is ghost note: L is regular note:
lRR lRR l LRR lRR lRR lRR l LRR
[Regular snare (L) initially on the 3rd, subsequently on every 4th]
Your playing sounded excellent to me (including ghost notes)...I have seen a number of videos on this beat (Rosanna), and it has been explained as "triplets" (one as "hh-hh-sn")...on Jeff P's video, he said that the 1st and 3rd hit (of the triplet) was the hi-hat (hh) - which makes me think that the extended beat/shuffle is simply single strokes alternating between the snare and hi-hat (i.e., hh-sn-hh)...am I interpreting the beat incorrectly?...can you explain?...
hey...thanks for the comment. JP's video always had me wondering too. All i can tell you (if you watch mine again) is that i play a RRL triplet for 1, 2, and 3, and on the end of the forth i switch it to a quick LLR for an extra ghost note. and actually the R restarts the groove. This is just the way i learned the half time shuffle
In my opinion he catches the rim of the snare way to much, personally i think the ghosts flow better w/o the rim. but then again, you did say different take at it, and i had actually never heard it played that way.
Watch Peter Nttregren, he's doubling the bass drum after the second hand beat of the snare once after every measure. It's how Jeff plays it and explains in his videos.
That is sick, dude. Definitely one of the sickest pop rock drum tracks ever. This is one of those tracks just like "Spirit of Radio" that I'll NEVER be able to drum to. I put this in my top 5 as far as nice grooves, along with the aforementioned Rush number, "Fool in the Rain" by Led Zep and "Cissy Strut" by the Meters.
Hello, you asked me to check this out after you watched my version of this!
Seems pretty good to me, though I do not pretend to be a Porcaro expert. The full shuffle builds in 1st verse, and there is a bass drum double that helps the groove. Like your bridge section, though purists will probably complain! Have a look at geofffry doing this - awesome.
wow, the first tight cover. Well done!

You kick ass. Loosen up that snare tuning a lot. Way too tight.
You got the groove though down cold.
