The worst thing they ever did with television was to deregulate it. There was a time when they could only broadcast so many hours a day. So, the programmes they made back then were better in that they had more time spent on them and the production values were better. Now, with hundreds of channels on 24 hours a day, the quality has been spread so thinly that it's almost indistinguishable. Quality over quantity, any time.

I remember trying to explain our celebrity culture to a girl from Belgium once. When I said we are obsessed with non-entities she said "oh you mean like that guy who owns Virgin?"
