this was the perfect way for omar to go. they didn't have to undermine his ruthless character by having him die in a firefight with some street boys. he gets crept up on by someone you'd least expect. i couldnt see it happen any other way.
I think that in his final scene just before walking into the store, Omar knew it was over. You can just see how defeated he looks when no one's around to hear his threat. Compare his actions to him effortlessly walking into the pit in season one and taking the stash from the dealers who claimed they had MAC-10's.
