I kind of get his overall theory here but he's very bad at explaining it. Basically what he trying to say if that there are certain patterns and that "once you get going" on a pattern it's easy to know which notes come next... but he does horrible at explaining this.
Man this is probably the most important thing I have ever learned on guitar playing. I have usually learned riffs and this transformed my playing in a very profound way.
thanks. love Television. Love your sound. How did you get that great tone on Call Mr. Lee? thanks again.
this video is useless without a general knowledge of music theory. most of these videos are pointless because the majority of guitarists don't know fundamental theory. lessons on scales and intervals would need to take place to understand this even a little. also, whats the point when he does not really explain the concept or the use of what he just taught.
@punky246810 - the problem as I see it is that they print tabs which are useless if you can actually follow any of the videos. By the time you can follow the videos you can find so many songs by ear. It would make so much more sense for them to print lessons to get people up to the level of the videos...but I guess more people just want tabs than want any kind of theory lessons in print.
This is only the second place/site I've seen the modes and their relative positions described in the way I think of them but I go by the mode names. Descending, it is LIMDAPL!

@ANIM0SI7Y - the text would help actually. he keeps referring to it. by the time u see it online or on demand it's off shelves and u have to order from the guitar world shop :(. Thing is you want/need the column to follow. I'm convinced that with a lot of these lessons, if you can just follow along w/o the column there's a great chance you don't actually need said lessons.
Jeez, lay off the negative and personal remarks and do some homework. Richard approaches the instrument and the physics behind the music in a novel and interesting way. Not the ONLY way, and maybe not a way that's useful for you. Have some respect for the man. If you don't want to explore this, or can't, , there's always Mel Bay.
This guy is very good. Brilliant, in fact. Don't let his quirky personallity distract you from that fact. It would be like Eienstien trying to explain physics to the layman.
Richard Lloyd had some serious drug problem during the 70's when he created magic with Television. :) Which explains his appearance here. Absolutely brilliant guitarist, absolutely brilliant band.
@edwina9 very envious... wish I had the money, he's doing lessons via skype as well (for those of us not in NYC)... just can't afford anything right now :-(
You're very lucky ! I've made a giant leap in my playing since I followed his column in guitar world. How do you get in touch with him ? You just call ?!
I've read his articles and they're actually really good. I'm sure it's easier to follow in written form. Highly recommended. I don't think that the video necessarily does his column justice but GW thinks that everything has to be multimedia nowadays, though it might make a good supplement to the written material.
Dude is on meds! Okay, so he said that was major scales? But what the eff is 8675309, BR549 junk? My guitar plays keys/notes. Who would like to break down what just happened here?
How's that acid treating you? Chasing them magic numbers.. Open Sesame agricup agricultural AGRICULTURAL the magic ins to the secret of music... who let this guy in the studio?
