Sorry for asking, I don't know much about cameras or camcorders, but this video just got me hooked, and i did a little a reserch on google and the SX30 IS is is only 35x zoom, do you have to buy a separate lent or how is that you get 140x zoom ?

Can you please let me know because i want to buy this camera but i don't want to buy the wrong one. Thanx.

@r1ckyjordan nop... the 140x zoom is digital, the 35x zoom is in the lent, and this camera cant have another lent, so.... if you buy this camera ypu are gonna have the 140x zoom, like a digital cam, and the 35x zoom...... e.e sorry for bad english :P

@JesperFTW No. Just because you can see the craters doesnt mean your going to be able to see the American Flag. Remember, craters are several times bigger than what is shown through the camera.

I'm getting one for my birthday...my sister has won awards with this camera, but she's moved on to something more sophisticated now, but I'm chomping at the bit to get mine. The Nikon/Canon plant in Japan got hit when the earthquake tsunami hit there, but they have fixed the plant and now so should have mine in a few weeks...I'm wondering if I should test mine for radiation???

Is it just me, or did anyone else notice something flashing? Vertically down from the top of the moon, beneath the first little grey crater (easier to see in full screen). No -Lol- I'm not a UFO nut, it's probably just a trick of the light. Great camera and video btw.

Hey Guys,

Please be sure that he used the digital zoom. Thats the same effect you get if you zoom into a picture after you made it. The Zoom he had at 12 seconds ist like 35x(thats the maximum optical zoom) You get much better quality with this. For all of you who want to buy a superzoom-cam: The Lumix DMC-FZ 100 would be a better choice. It coasts the same has a optical zoom until 32x(800mm) take more pictures per second(until11) and has a much better picture quality and much features.

Its not impossible.... learn more before commenting! the zoom is up to 140x digitally... its 35x optical but it can go past that to 140x. After 35x its digital not optical anymore.... it still can go past 35x but won't be as clear, more grainy....

@ShortyTHEone Its much better just to use the optical zoom on a camera. The digital zoom just makes the pixels bigger and thus reduces the quality of images.

I can confirm that this is pretty much pure video from the SX30, I've got a similar one on my channel. I've taken quite a few shots of the moon as well, very nice picture quality. For those of you who really want to give this camera a shot, keep in mind that the video on it is extremely simplistic, so don't expect too much in the way of setup for the camera, and manual focus is, like in most digital cameras, purely done with buttons, so it gets a bit difficult to keep a focus on something.
