wow those lightning flashes are bright if you can get lucky and pause it when they flash the whole town is lit!!! there must have been some great lightning just behind where this camera was..how could that weatherman not tell those were power flashes...
thanks for uploading this. I live in Junction City. This freakin tornado hit Chapman as an EF3, lifted up just as it was about to cross the highway here, and then dropped right back down on west Manhattan as an EF4. Truly incredible. Not only do tornadoes hit one house and miss the other, they hit one city, and skip entire other ones.
If the tornado would have stayed on the ground for the whole time it would have been on the ground for at least 30 miles and likely would have reached EF5 strength I assume.
yes, and then, i'm assuming, west Manhattan would look FAR worse than it was. My god, more than just Waters (a store) would've been blown away completely.
I was looking for the tornado by pausing and fast forwarding, and I found two thing. 1) pause and :53 and :54 seconds and it appears that what the wx dude is pointing at is a rain shaft. However, it seems like there is a funnel hanging down a bit closer to the screen. 2) After letting the video load up and fastfowrarding by dragging the play button, you can see the rain shaft move through town from right to left, and the tornado may have come in from the right, off camera. What can you find?
The camera was never pointed south enough for the tornado to come in from the right - it tore a pretty straight path from southwest Manhattan to just past campus, which is almost exactly the center of the city. So essentially what you are seeing is the tornado coming straight at the camera almost the whole time, although it does appear that the rain sweeps from right to left.
Good point. I don't know exactly the direction the camera is pointed in, but I saw a map of the damage path from the National Weather Service. Seeing that it hit town with F4 strength, you should see some debris swirl in the video, unless the tornado was rain wrapped. A pause at 1:51 illuminates the rain shaft again, but the cloud up above could be a wall cloud. It's hard to tell.
i think that the power goes out during those big flashes 0:01 to 7:03 i guess
