That's not true at all. Most people who are against the war, and people on the left, are just as upset as anybody else when troops die. It just so happens that we also get upset about the loss of civilian lives. Don't misrepresent other people.
Regarding McCain. Maybe it's a British thing, but I see little wrong with a bit of dark humour, especially from someone who has actually experienced it. It doesn't mean he doesn't respect the troops. It's not like he made the joke at a funeral.
