Actually, even without seeing the episode the song is plenty understandable and very moving. When I first found it, I had it in my playlist for about 2 weeks straight. For me, the lyrics evoke a sort of anti-Quasimoto or Beast; a man who let his outward appearance twist him into a monster on the inside, with a mother who tried -- and failed -- to stop him.
this song gives me the thought of wanting to be released. like a caged bird. something that just cant stand its current surroundings. just wants to be released.
@Lordgale119 No, that's still your own doing. You do have some choice over what you let affect you and how it does so, though some matters are more difficult than others.
@Lordgale119 No one is correct? Ok, but a two are! Me and Rastefanis :P
One character has foreign cells implanted into him as a part of his work, and later decides that he's basically going to be the biggest douche on the planet.
The other is born a sickly little thing, and the cybernetics needed to survive essentially make him an abomination of his parents. Despite this, he goes on to try and do what he believes is good, rather than "Hey space alien, let's kill everyone!"
@diskincluded And that's where alternate character interpretation and depth of character come into play. Characters with layers-like FF characters- can be interpreted in multiple ways, and this is one way I interpret him and the song.
@diskincluded And this is where Alternate interpretations come into play. Are they really flat characters, or are we just missing something that would make them understandable and deeper? Sometimes it's not about what you see, but what you THINK you see. As long as I can speculate and come up with my own views on things, then that's all I need out of a story.
@Lordgale119 Dude, it's really not a good game, but it gets defended a lot by people for whom it was the first RPG they encountered. Now, had you said maybe Kain or Golbez....
@diskincluded I don't like the game, I like the mythos. The characters. The World. I don't like typical FF gameplay, but FF4 is one of the best I've seen so far, and I actually found myself caring about the characters while I was playing, which is a bit unusual for me. But regardless, I guess I just see something in it you don't, and that's perfectly fine.
Lol... FF4 ? Deep characters ? Hey, I'm a big fan of FF6 myself but even I can admit the characters are developped in a simple (but effective) way. And this game has a better plot/characters than 4.
I don't know why you get pissed because this song made someone think about a character from another series. Hell, I associate this song with a few non Gits characters too.
As for FF7, I'm not sure it's really overrated. The fandom for it tend to be awful (especially since SE produced the lame compil) but the game has merits. It does have a meaningful story, well developped characters and big twists. Deal with it.
But if you want something more impressive... you have Xenogears. It may fail as a game (contrary to FF7), but as a story, it has so much potential that it's almost a crime this game wasn't the one to get prequels and a remake.
On the day I bought this CD, my mood was at an all-time low. I had never seen this series, so I didn't know the context of this song, but it spoke to me. Maybe it is a depressing song, but knowing that I was not the only one to have felt these feelings gave me strength, and I became a better person after dealing with my issues. Now, years later, this song represents a familiar emotion, but I can appreciate it more for its aesthetics and enjoy it more.
i cant remember how many times i got stoned or drunk to this song. it's humbling i suppose. but then again it's also beautifully refreshing to see the more morbid side of of it all. happy happy happy all the time can get rather sickening when you like to see things from a far broader spectrum. all in all a beautiful song that i count as a personal anthem. almost in spite of how selfish that sounds.
You know, I wonder if the cyborgs, androids, and full-prosthetics dream when they sleep in GITS or do their ghosts remain awake through-out the night.
@crazyjavi87 Well, I imagine that cyborgs and full prosthetics do dream, since they still retain their brains. Androids, not being human, not so much.
I love Yoko Kanno's unusuality. When the song came on it was dreamlike, and a rough man's voice started singing- it worked. In another song she uses kazoos to it sound evil- KAZOOS. And, others times I expect her to hold out the note, but she makes it stop almost suddenly. She also likes to sing in made-up languages- which I love and do too. Yoko Kanno should be more known in the world, she's 'fresh' (not in the normal sense, but just AWESOME).
This song sounds much more like it's about a transsexual, to me. I don't hear anything anti-feminist. Of course, it also makes sense in that way in the context of that GITS episode. But I don't get that from the song.
When I first heard this song I thought the lyrics were sort've weird and a bit disturbing... And then I saw the episode in which this song appears. It makes perfect sense now.
As has been pointed out here, the fellow in the episode was born very infirm. I believe in the song when he says, "a woman underneath" he means he is a weak creature.
he means that he is gay or affiliate himself with a woman. He was expressing the pain of being that way in his society(probably a religious family). That's the vibe I got from it.
Though that's not what it means in the context of the episode, it's definitely one way it could apply outside of it. I first heard this song outside of the episode while I was going through a pretty rough patch in my life, part of which involved dealing with my sexuality and wondering how my parents were going to react...and paying attention to the lyrics for the first time, I just broke down and cried. But I think it actually helped me in the long run - everything's going fine now, at any rate.
That's truly beautiful how the song helped you. I also feel that this song helped me through a part of my life fraught with pain and misery. And while it wasn't the questions I raised about my sexuality that were the cause of my torment, I can most assuredly relate to you. "Beauty is Within Us," that simple phrase gives me hope, even to this day.
Actually, it only really makes sense in the episode. It's kind of a negative view of "woman," to be honest - the man was born incredibly sickly, but helping him via cybernetics or placing him into a machine form was against his parents' religion. It twisted him, and that line is sort of him identifying himself as weak and helpless, which is kind of a crappy thing for "a woman underneath" to mean, but...
This entire song is tragic when heard alongside the episode. It makes me tear up every time.
@PoisonxTea I don't know if you are reffering to that episode where a man's ''consciousness'' is transfered in a tank and run rampant in the city to say ''Hi'' to his mom and dad because he was ''still alive''
ooo do u mean the second episode of the 1st gig? thats my favorite too. That episode made me cry the 1st time i watched it and it still makes me well up lol.
That 2nd episode with the tank has to be my favorite.
