This performance makes no sense to me. Orfeo has just travelled to the depths of hell to recover his beloved wife and resists looking at her for a long time. He finally succumbs, she dies and he then spends half the aria wandering around singing to the audience! Why?? It's an incredibly personal moment and the audience should be watching in on it, not having it forced down their throats. There was zero action to this performance, just "a pretty song." This may have been acceptable in the days o
Usually not a fan of the countertenor voice, but it works beautifully here. Striking to hear the high voice coming out of a quite robust physique. Gives one the flavor of what the castratti must have sounded like in much earlier times.
OMG - I can't believe it! I was at this very opera in Dublin! It was an excellent production. I was wondering where I could hear this again. Thank you very much for posting!! Really made my day!
I absolutely must say that this is the best rendition that I have seen. Just can't stand women singing Orpheus and avant-garde costumes and decorations because it looks so false. And this looks very soulful. I wonder if one can find a full opera somewhere.. hardly a chance.
This is definitely my favorite version of this aria on youtube. His singing and acting are the best I've seen on here. And I've watched about 12 of them in the past hour :)
