Ryu is officially the lamest ninja I've ever seen. However, he's not as lame as Naruto or Yuffie; though, technically they aren't ninjas but frankly who gives a shit. Ryu fails as a ninja, plot and gameplay

Best justification I can give that Robert knew Irene was kidnapped before Ryu did was that she was just recently kidnapped (as in a couple of days, even just hours) during work, and since Robert and Irene both work in the army (since 2 probably takes place after 3), "Duke" knew it before Ryu did

Of course, it might just be wishful thinking.

Its one (or even two) shadow clones. Its a "sub" weapon that you can get. They copy ever move you make.

If you look really close at the boss you can see that it's wearing a cloth-like mask, during the fight, and in the cutscene you can see a cloth-like material around the neck of the boss.

So I think that the boss was wearing a mask during the fight and Ryu took the mask off afterward.

I think this explains the different looks of the boss.
