@starguard i seriously doubt that, in 20 years, the demographics of china will be so bad, meaning, about 20-30% of their population will be over 60. thats, basically 360 million people retired... needing care.. the economy if china is shallow. The per GDP percapita ratio of Japan and china is 1:10 meaning, a avg Japanese worker who earns 40k a year, his/her chinese counterpart, earns 4k, that been the norm. The Chinese economy needs Japan technologically, and the world.. as a market.

Following the comments here, I would suggest that Japanese armor forces are really more for their prestige, political, oh-yeah-we-have-tanks-too value, than any real military use. Beachhead defense would be better served with rapid fire 155mm SP Howitzers doing "shoot 'n' scoot" barrages from 20Km inland.

Besides, if ever Japan is invaded, something has gone so very terribly wrong with the world, it won't really matter that much, anyway. (Of course, there is the Godzilla threat to consider....)

@spanish111japan The U.S, has been on the verge of civil war for the last 16 years. There were four atomic deviced detonated in 1945, 2 test shots, 1 in Nevada, one off what is now North Korea. The other two Japanese Devices were disposed of at sea about 20 miles off Satsuma in the yellow sea. Had Japan been earlier, or Germany, the world would have been much different. Note, only two atomic bombs have ever been used. If Britain got it first, the empire would still exist.

Also, Tank has limited use in Japan cos the country is too mountainous and small for large scale tank regime offense. The future invasion force,presumably and most likely ,China will be confined to a limited space to wage its invasion after they had ever defeated the combined fleets of Japan and US Navy,however, the chance of such scenario is next to 0.

Yes, Japan would be benefited more from deploying more attack helicopters which react much faster to eliminate those invasion force. However, Japan still need some tanks for beachhead defence.May be a thousand tank would be more than enough. They should be deployed at the beachhead to encounter Chinese landing force.

I heard that this tank design was limited to a certain weight, so one can't fairly compare its armour with those of other tanks (as many ppl like comparing tanks)

Yeah, every Japanese tank is designed to limit its weight. The new tank is also the same. The reason is heavily relating to Japan's geography and defense policy. You know Japan's mountainous geography. Most of the foreign tanks cannot act the same way JGSDF can. So, these tanks are not designed to combat in overseas. These are only designed to act within the soil of Japan. Weight is important for accurate and powerful shooting. But Japan's technologies are applied to cover that weakness.
