  • i am a beginner and i was wondering wat tipe of oil pastels do u recommend??

  • what did u use to blend out your color? is it oil or water? and if its oil, what kind is it?

  • That is beautiful! I've been watching my front yard tree turn gold over the last few days and was wondering how to turn it into a painting. I think I will try something similar to what you did here, though I have no doubt coming up with such a beautiful product will not be so easy as you made it seem!

  • @vthings001 thank you much! And I wish you the best of luck

  • That's cool video!

I personally prefer to use the finger smudging technique. I did give myself a blister on my last piece though! Check out the Time Lapse of it on my channel.

  • how did you get it to blend like that?

  • Awesome, I will try to painting same you, thank you.

  • Panda brand oil pastels ? :P btw , is that canson xl paper? :O

    ToT ... beautiful

  • I like it, it's nice to see somebody do something other than familiar faces (like celebrities) good job man

  • @CherylRollison thanks lol

  • Where do you get turpentine?

  • @YagamiRaitosan i bought mine from michael's. i'm sure any supermarket sells some, like walmart.

  • Pretty cool :)

  • nice job and I love John Mayer. Thanks for sharing

  • please post some more....

  • @2720vish i've been so lazy with my art lately lol. maybe i'll do something over the summer.

  • AWESOME! Paint a portrait. :>

  • @J0viiS haha. i painted a mini self-portrait but I don't really like it =P

  • @dakarads Awww, Let us see it. Please? :)

  • @J0viiS i dont knowww. haha.

  • Can we use laquer thinner instead of turpentine?

    do you wear gas mask?

you work at open air area or closed area?

  • @commentbernas i work in a regular room. and no i don't wear a gas mask. honestly turpentine is NOT that dangerous. i'm tired of people asking that. they sell it at any art store. if it were that dangerous, then it wouldn't be on the shelf in the first place. you only use a small amount anyways. and i don't know what laquer thinner is sorry.

  • It wasn't boring, it was clever, hahaha lol

  • WOW!!

  • do you use rough paper?

  • @staydum93 what do you mean rough paper?

  • @dakarads the opposite of smooth paper...

sorry for my bad english :/

  • @staydum93 oh it's no problem. and yes, the paper is smooth. it's not textured or anything like that.

  • that is f***ing amazing man, I love oil pastel paintings :)

  • @BlackAndWhitetx hahaha thanks

  • o.O naise panting =]

  • I just started using oil pastels and was wondering where to get inspiration from? Do you come up with art as you go, or do you always have something to base it off of?

    Your work is very inspiring=)

  • just curious what brand of oil pastels are you using?

  • Reeves oil pastels

  • Very beautiful work! You are very gifted and blessed :)

  • This was a very nice painting. I haven't done this in a while so I hope I still can! Thanks for the turpentine tip, too; that should help.

  • thank you,

    and good luck

  • How do you draw the details?

  • you can use colored pencils.. i just used oil pastels.

  • this is really great, i love it :) i have two questions though.... what kind of paper did you use and is turpentine toxic?

  • Thanks =)

I just used drawing paper... Its called Strathmore Drawing Pads

And don't worry about the turpentine.. its only dangerous if you swallow it or get it in your eye, not if you touch it.. just wash your hands after you use it. Also, it is pretty flammable so be careful about that.

  • thanks for the info about the turpentine :)

  • no problemo

  • @dakarads touching turpentine may still cause irritation for some... your skin still absorbs it into your body. I would just use a brush!

  • its not as if your skin is like a fast absorbing sponge, it takes time for your skin to absorb chemicals. its just like washing counters with sprays like lysol and such...

you just have to wash your hands. its nothing dangerous.

  • @dakarads lol... not to mention the fumes...

years of using turp can be harmful... even some oils are toxic as well...

i prefer a brush... i'm sorry if that offends you ;)

  • i never said it offended me, but okay whatever floats your boat.

  • Oh couple of more questions! About how long did it take you to complete this? How many different shades did you end up using? Did you use a reference photo? I'm just learning how to use oil pastels and I found your video fascinating! Do you have any tips on how to use the turpentine correctly?

  • Just out of curiosity, what is that on the bottom left of the picture that you start out drawing? Is it leaves coming in from that corner?

  • yeah just a leaf that was poorly drawn. it took me maybe 5 hours or so.. can't remember really. and yes, i was looking at a picture on my laptop.

about the turpentine- you really don't need to use too much, because it spreads out pretty easily. and don't worry if you use too much because it dries.. nothing really happens except the paper wrinkles a bit. you can use your finger, or a paper towel to spread it. just play around a little bit ;)

    and thanks for the comment!

  • Do i need to use the special liquid or can i just draw with the pastels by themselves?

  • if you want to make the colors look smooth, then you should use the turpentine.

  • Hello Dakarads :)) I'm a vision art student, I wasn't familiar with oil pastel, I mean, Don't know the correct way to use it. But thanks to you, you kinda helped me :$ I was a bit concerned about turpentine, once that in portugal the name is very different and also the translution. Well, thank you very very much, you kinda saved a persons life today :D ((())) Congratulations ! ^^ *

  • lol well thanks!

    and i'm glad i helped.

  • That looks amazing! way better than what i do

  • What kind of paper did you use?

  • Strathmore drawing pads

  • Thank you! I couldn't tell if you were using drawing paper or watercolor paper or something.

  • I bet alot of people told u this but u are a awsome at drawing great picture

  • wow the way im looking at it, it looks like the tree branches are sprouting off the top of a cliff and you can see the grass and water below.

    really cool!

  • thanks!

  • You're welcome bud!

  • Very nice work darak....

  • I really enjoyed watching this! I've been teaching my daughter to draw using oil pastels lately and she totally loves using them. However, I can't let her use turpentine yet so she needs to rub a lot!

The outcome of your drawing is beautiful.

    -Rain

  • you can get water soluble oil pastels. Does this have the same effect or are the ones with turps have better results?

  • i wouldn't know. i only use chalk and oil pastels. sorry.

  • Yes you can get water soluble oil pastels. The brand I know of is Portfolio. They're a student grade oil pastel, but they work pretty well.

  • does water work? amazing by the way

  • haven't tried. i'd guess it doesn't. oil pastels are oil based (shocker, I know). so you know, oil and water don't mix.

    & thanks

  • I like the drawing! What an incredible piece of art it turned out to be! I would have never guessed....I watched it half way, then decided to cheat and see what happens at the end and wow I was amazed. Thanks.

  • haha yeah it is pretty long. if i could re-do it, i would make it shorter.. sorry!

    and thanks!

  • I was looking for videos to learn how to use oil pastels. I can do a pretty good job with charcoals but was given a really good oil pastel set for Christmas. This video is really good. It goes from starting out like crayon scribbles to amazing. Sooo many layers.... I'm gonna have to have patience learning this one. Luv the video! =)

  • good luck and thanks!

  • Do you have to blend it with the turpentine, or can you just use the tissue alone?

  • no you can use either or.

  • turps is really toxic a carcinogenic!

  • thanks for the heads up.

you know, i was really, really concerned.

  • *carcinogen* is the noun form

    carcinogenic is an adjective

    ...wow nerd moment

  • hahaha

  • LOVE IT!

  • NICE ** U

  • Very beautiful.. I watched with my daughter.

We both are natural artist.. and you are so talented.

Thanks for sharing. We learn something today.

    Regards

    Wendy

  • thanks wendy!

  • This is totally amazing. I love it. I can't seem to do anything with oil pastels. It's rather sad. lol- so what are you using the liquid for? Did you blend with a kleenex?

  • I use the liquid to blend the colors... That's what turpentine does. Using a kleenex or any kind of tissue works, I know.. but it doesn't give the same results as turpentine would. Turpentine doesn't really leave any smudges. Using a tissue sort of pushes the oil around... doesn't blend too well.

  • Awesome painting! I think I will give pastels a try. Blending colors is very much a thrill for me.

  • enjoyable, thanks

  • I have oil pastel. I can't do art like that. Keep up the work! You have the talent in your hands.

  • Your talented. there are only some people with this talent and you've got it!!

  • thanks!

  • wow!

  • i really like painting with oil pastels an dim currently recreating a piece by paul cezanne but urs is amazing hope i can get that good

  • divine!!! :)

  • Wow, beautiful

  • Dakarads, thanks for sharing your skill and

technic. I am a learner of oil pastel landscape.

  • well thank you for watching :)

  • sheeh~

    that's amazing

  • WOW ur really good At oil Pastels! All i can do with them is draw scribbles :(

  • it's not water. it's turpentine, and you can buy the odorless kind.

  • Did he use water??!

  • nice work . . what brand of oil pastel do you use?

  • wow what a beauty!!!

  • great vid

  • i favorited this, cos it is the best, ihav oil pastels and dont know how to use them, so tanx a lot, xx

    lynda

  • Mine is nothing compared with this art hahaha

  • I just can't get enough...I have to watching over and over again, SO AWESOME!!!!!

  • Turpentine is dangerous, be careful. It really shouldn't touch your skin, nor should you breathe the fumes. I would buy a stomp for blending with. I do oil pastels too, just thought I'd say something about that. Nice job otherwise!

  • lol i felt like watching this video again cause i stole some oil pasetels today form my drawing teacher. haha and i wanted to ask u.. umm whats that thing u use at 2:54... is that water?

  • wow lol nice.

but no its turpentine. you can pretty much buy it anywhere... kinda, lol.

    have fun :P

  • even though i dont paint as good as you i do like to record myself painting and i enjoy looking how i can create a white paper into something nice...

    you did it right!

  • this is awesome.

If you don't mind my asking, I noticed you were using some kind of wet medium to blend the pastels together. What was it? Just water?

  • no actually its called turpentine. its a paint thinner and you use it to blend oil pastels together.

  • Would water work in place of turpentine??

  • no. water wouldn't blend them together. think of it this way...

oil pastels are oil based, shocker i know, so do you think water mixes with oil? & that's why water doesn't work.

    :)

  • Very nice.. I liked it... You inspire me... I remember the first oil pastel painting I made, It wasn't that good but I am happy and proud with what I did.... Anyway what is turpentine and why do you need to use it?

  • Question! Do you have a DeviantArt profile? That'd be AWESOME if you did. I'd totally watch you. Woo! : )

  • No I don't... Yet, haha.

I should do it. I actually just googled it b/c i didn't know what it was lol. So thanks for letting me know about it.

    & Thanks for commenting!

  • I love you. : )

I love autumn and the trees. I just love trees in general, I draw them in art ALL the time.

    *glomp*

  • haha. i love you too!

  • brilliant love it! 2 ques...do u use anythin special to smudge the colours? also can one use acrylic paint over oil pastels?

  • yeah its called turpentine.

i haven't tried using acrylics over pastels but thanks for the idea... i should do that one of these days. haha time to experiment!

sorry it took so long to comment back.

  • Bellow i ment tree branches lol

  • Lol and my art teacher shows me the right way to draw a tree? Your better

  • seriously dakarads.. I'd like to see more.

autumn leaves inspire me too! :)

  • I forgot to comment this, why am I doing it at 1 in the morning?

This is Danny. Danny is amazing. He's an amazing painter, and I loves him. :) But you should see what he does on cam. :O lmao. This is really good, i'm a bit jealous. :D

  • same ol' crazy erin lol.

  • wow..can i use water as the substitute for the turpentine??

  • i haven't tried but i'm sure it wouldn't work. plus i think it would make the paper wrinkly after it dries.

  • Oil is not soluble in water, so no, you cannot use water as a substitute for turpentine in dissolving oil pastels.

You can buy water soluble color crayons from Caran D'Ache if you want to do similar work but using only water as your thinner.

  • Hey Dakarads.. Becautiful work. I was just wondering.. what was the whiteish stuff that you put on the paper to lighten it up? The first time on this painting you used it on the green part. Also I love the white on the 2 sides of the twig.. how did you do that?

  • it was tupentine Chris TBee22

  • thanks, i forgot to tell him lol :P

  • when i try to do stuff like that it always looks bad

  • Shauna, just try to practice everyday and soon your artwork could look like dannys.=]

  • yeah just never give up. and it probably actually does look good. i bet it does. whenever an artist creates their own art, they tend to think its horrible lol. but in reality its not bad at all. i do it all the time. im sure your paintings are great :)

  • Art isn't about the look's. It's about getting the message you're trying to send sent. For example, the art could look like a 3rd grader drew it, but have a really good message. The message of this: this person likes autumn trees

  • i still cant get over how nice that painting was great job!!!!:) keep with it im tryin to learn how to record me makin painting and put it on yt its a bit of a hastl for me....not much of a comp guy, ya know=]

  • thank you a billion =D.

it is a bit of a hassle to record yourself, put it on the computer, and then edit it and so forth... lol. but its worth it ;P

  • Hello im also an oil pastel artist well......a budding one=} i was just wanting to know what song the first one was?

  • well hello, lol. it was "Im Yours" by Jason Mraz.

  • was it the original or was it a remake by another artist?

  • im not entirely sure... it is jason mraz just a different version i guess.

  • ok=]

  • awesome, i want to make a drawing like u u.u well, now i have the bases hohoho!! thanks a lot

  • hi, did you put water to blend the colors?

  • no i used turpentine.

  • i love pastels too ;P

great job~ the colors are so beautiful!

  • thanks alanna :)

  • holy shit that was amazing.

  • thanks lol

  • I loved it. I own pastels and I am home with a cold today. Going to get them out and try them for the first time today.

  • they're so much fun lol.

    hope you feel better soon!

  • Great! The best thing...to me... is seeing someone get into art!=D
