Besides my other thoughts.. Cybil Shepard was and still is one of the most beautiful women alive. I would not say 'hot'- Megan Fox is 'hot'.. this lady is a living masterpiece.
Big drawback in this film is that people like Travis Bickle do NOT look like a young Robert De Niro in real life. This scene apeals to lonely teenagers because it sort of represents their fantasy or transcending the ritualized norms of social interaction and having a deeper, more meaningful connection, preferably with an attractive female they desire. What Tarvis does with Betsy here is what all very lonely, socially awkward teenagers wish they could do.
Speak for yoourself idiot, Robert De Niro doesnt look like a particlar model or Mr World, this represents that those lonely people can get hot chicks like Betsy, you completly missed the point in this scene and movie.
@bpatrice49 Yes, but is there something wrong with that? "Transcending the ritualized norms of social interaction and having a deeper, more meaningful connection, preferably with an attractive female", sounds pretty great to me.
Travis taking Betsy to the adult theater automatically proves that he was gay, because no man who likes women would ever try to pull a stunt like that.
@XFS540 Despite being disgusted by the world around him, Travis wants to be apart of that. We see this in the scene right before we are introduced to Betsy as he says he believes that someone should try to become a person like other people. This also partly explains Betsy calling travis a contradiction as he proceeds to call those people a "filthy mass". He views the porn as normal because he sees that sort of content everyday on the streets. He takes Betsy there because that is what he believes
@XFS540 No it means he was totally out of touch with reality and he was that detached from people that he thought she would like something like that....
Travis Bickle seems so observant, and honest. He seems normal and confident here. But he seems to be very devious and cunning in his way, he tells people what they want to hear for his own sake. This may be blatantly obvious, or wrong but it is disturbing to me. This film is so bold, this character isn't likeable he is relatable in a very unfortunate way. He could of had Betsy, but for his utter inexperience with women. He ruins it before it can even begin. Tragic and realistic.
@HBK344356 Yh I tried not to lay blame on either side though, but I see what you are saying. He is a victim, but at the same time maybe not. He himself blames her and the world for the way things are, ''you are going to burn in hell like the rest of them''. But he is obv not stable, he is bitter and delusional. In this mind frame he would feel like a victim and play it, but we cannot just blame the world for our ourselves, that is completely devoid of responsibility. We make choices.
@13thfloor18 Bitter yes Delusional no, he has every right to be bitter not only is he a victim when he is living the terrible life he is living but he will be an even bigger victim if he carried out dispicable acts (which he did, just because killed the lowest form of scum to our society the bottom line is he committed murder) where brainwashed so called normal society will cast him as the bad guy when the reality is it is their way of living that has caused him to go over the edge.
@HBK344356 Interesting point, the anti-hero, very complex characterisation. The people he kills are scum and his act despite being murder is somehow heroic. He is corrupted by all the shit he sees around him. What about the Palantine scene though when he looks as if he is going to assassinate him? Something to do with Betsy?
@13thfloor18 He was actually trying to kill Palantine but the police officer spotted him so he directed his rage at a different target... the pimps, so it is the same rage just the scum happned to be the victim of it....
@13thfloor18 That being said with Palantine being a politican he is scum as well the only difference is sport works on the street and the other wears a custom made suit...
Something about his acting in this particular scene just amazes me... I don't know, the eye contact, the actions, I don't know.. It's simple, but very amazing.
i know the ,movie like all,but what ireally like its the way how travis introduce himself, being just a taxi driver and her a smart and beatiful woman, and finally she accep it,but what women likes are men who feel sure, authentic, and little of goog and evil,a good bad man like Travis.
At the end Betsy has a renewed interest in Travis, I thought his flame for her would never dwindle, but I think he found a new inportance in his celebrity,After she dissed him and after he gained this new inportance he just found Betsy unimportant . Am I right?.
The first one essentially agrees with you; whether it be through the catharsis of violence, a bolstering of self-esteem through celebrity or that gained from performing a wholly meaningful act, or simple emotional growth, Travis no longer needs Betsy.
The second agrees with the interpretation but perceives it as too good to be true; the coda of the film is Travis's fantasy. After all, what can be better than getting Betsy? To have her want him and him not need her.
@mrstrings65 AHA but did the last scene in the taxi really happen? That's what's great about the ending. You can choose to believe that either a) Travis is a hero and lives as a free man and one night picks up Betsy again only to be able to shrug her off or that b) this is just his fantasy as he rots in a jail cell somewhere, or c) he's free and Cybil's last appearance is only in his imagination.
Nothing wrong with analyzing great movies that make you think!
Also, his self-hatred is sufficient that if she turns him down, this perverse, masochistic side of him will relish the experience, and seek to push him further into madness and violence.
Indeed, this part of him ultimately holds sway. As Schrader has made clear, taking Betsy to the porno theatre is not naivety; Travis's driving unconscious motivation is to shove his ugliness in her face, to show her how sordid and lonely and screwed up and unworthy of her love he is.
Betsy may superficially seem to have a perfect life - privileged, beautiful WASP but Travis is right - she IS unhappy. Trapped by expectations and rules of WASP society - and her looks. Being hit on with that line, she must think: so what about the rest of me? Will anyone ever care to know the real me or they just wanna look?
I was partly inspired by this approach to ask the woman of my dreams out just yesterday, in much the same, utterly candid Travis style. It wasn't completely unsuccessful. Now I just have to avoid taking her to a porn movie.
It also gave me an insight I probably couldn't have reached any other way: Travis has accepted despair; he's in a place where deep down he knows he has no hope of succeeding with Betsy, and for that reason he is free to approach her. True loss of hope is a liberation.
nope, Betsy is the symbol of Travis's loneliness. As much as he wants her more than anything; he will never be able to have her. He was destined to be lonely.
Travis isn't like other guys, he will never find someone who will love him back. Most Guys can't relate to that. It's his life long curse.
She was quite excellent in this movie and it for peanuts. Her repuation had hit the bottom thanks to boyfriend Bogdanovich putting her in roles she was not experienced for - and generally being an asshole when they bombed. The script had called for a "Cybill Shepherd type" as Betsey and Scorcese was astonished when The Real Thing was really up for it. De Niro hit on her and was rejected - and hated it for that...
Erm...this info was out there and common knowledge way before Cyb's book and was talked about by others long before herself ever mentioned it - see the book Easy Riders Raging Bulls by Peter Biskind for 1 example...
Yes,that is true...obviously there are perceptions..or wed just be drones drooling...but some people take things too far, like this dude..he is getting into things that dont exist, hes reflecting the parameters of his own world, which has nothing to do with this, jack
What makes this film so brilliantly disturbing is that it's easy to relate to Travis Bickle, and also frightening to see what he becomes by the end of the film.
@WWAAK What would you've 'turned into', love? Up to this point in the flick we are with Travis in a safe place of strength and keen observance, anywhere, anytime, at night. Bit now it's daylight. When I see this scene, I feel like the cab, I am worried for Travis. He is a strong scared fellow, swinging for the fences the best that he can. I'm still rooting for the fellow!
She does a good job in the movie playing an arrogant bitch. Apparently, at the time, her career wasn't going well and they were surprised that she would take the role.
LOL, I know the only good performance I've seen her in was in The Last Picture Show, where she played another arrogant bitch. She doesn't seem to have to act much.
who the fuck disliked this? that 1 person is officially part of the problem.
