  • I love the fact that all these new crappy sceaming bands are buying like £3000 deans and jacksons and just playing really fast and dropping the tuning and people think they're an amazing guitarist

Then you got Thruston Moore with a £500 Fender guitars that look destroyed and have stickers on that have faded

And hes using palm muting like Ive never seen before and making an amazing sound

Just proves amazing guitarist is really give them a peice of crap and they can still make beautiful music

  • KIM ROCK ICON!

  • yeahhhh

  • Just came....

  • Бля, обожаю такие вещщи!! Супер! Вот у кого сука учиться надо!!

  • Sonic - zawsze indie!

  • Just saying I think this song isnt really that good.

  • @lolzerist sorry to hear that, go listen to Nickleback

  • I know this band is really know of the noise made by guitars, and of course there's this wicked chick, Kim...but without Steve on drums SY could not exist

  • @lukedeacon You're an excellent troll; I didn't think Sonic Youth fans would catch the bait, but it seems like you got some of them going. Everyone falling shamelessly to petty arguing, I hope listening to Sonic Youth eventually unsticks you in time so youTube/the-mainstream-Internet can be more than bickering. Sonic Youth, this is one of my favorite songs! I want to see you live, just one more time...you live so close to me...Thurston, your solo stuff would be cool too. Can I hit on Kim Gordon?

  • Jim Morrison wouldn't have known what to do with Kim Gordon. Until he figured it out. (Calm down, before Thurston I meant).

  • I was born in this year :D

  • reminds me of many drunken nights

  • dmaziado genialllll

  • @Lukedeacon It's no music for you, you are one of those douches that think that if the song is no too hard to play then is no good. You think that the only thing that make a song good is a pretentious guitar solo. So well, you can watch videos of Steve Vai and his borings songs on youtube.

  • @PeS1258 I hate guitar solos.

  • @thecrikster I hate you.

  • @PeS1258 I hate U2

  • @goducks20101 Yeah, i hate Bono...

  • @PeS1258 no bo nose... soy ugando; soy juegar(playing) con palabras, poquito. adios.

  • @goducks20101 I understand.

  • @PeS1258 Accurate explanation of how those douches behave.

  • @PeS1258 lol awesome

  • and I love you, kim!!

  • classic

  • end? ... fuck! hahahaha

  • cum this song is insane

  • caraaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiii

  • Sonic Youth is fucking great they showed people that you don't have comprimise your sound or sell out in order to be popular in the mainstream world. I wish more bands of my generation would take some pointers from the example they set

  • I have a fucking shiver when i hear the I love you *.*

  • Later..... even louder (kims moan will be)

  • Fucking Intense!

  • Sonic youth shits on your favorite band!

  • orgasm.

  • Thurston looks a lot like Johnny Ramone in this clip

  • qué yegua esta KIm

    i love u (l) i love u (l) i love u (l)

  • probably their harshest song.

  • Sonic Youth.......words cannot express.

  • @oddell - I've come to the conclusion that as well as being the worst band in the world, Sonic Youth fans are also the worst. So right-on, self righteous and desperately trying so hard to be anti establishment with your musical tastes and pronouncements (heaven forbid a chorus, or a guitar solo), that what you end up being are musical fascists and bigots who get highly agitated if anyone dares express a different opinion.

  • @lukedeacon Just stay out of our world dude and you'll do just fine. Keep on listening to your Bay City Rollers and don't keep on rockin' in our free world...you parasite!

  • @TheKennyjoe - Thank you for reinforcing my point, you stupid, reactionary, narrow minded, bigoted fool. I rest my case.

  • @lukedeacon Damn Dude you must live in a basement cell room or something. Get out there and enjoy something that every musician has to offer...you stupid, reactionary, narrow minded, bigoted fool...Your case is not rested...Wake The Fuck Up!!!

  • @TheKennyjoe Give it a fucking rest. I like all kinds of music. I'm entitled not to like Sonic Youth.

  • @lukedeacon GO AWAY u pathetic loser!put your head back in the sand where u like it.if u dont like sonic youth why r u watching this video?leave us alone in our bliss&get a life...if u can

  • @lukedeacon They do have plenty of really good material, but there's plenty of shit to get through first

  • @duegold

    name a few prettie pleaseeee

  • @lukedeacon Eruption by Van Halen? Fret wanking felt hollow and souless after fucking around with it as a teen.. now i listen to that charged up spandex glam bollocks and i shudder with shame (for ever thinking it above bands like this) and my teeth grind from cringing so much. Christ, that party-cock-rock era had no fucking substance whatsoever.

  • @Garkar2006 What has my posting of Eruption got to do with anything? I could've posted a vid of me (or anyone) doing the splits in custard. It makes no difference to my (or anyone's) view on Sonic Youth. Don't be so quick to assume that it represents what I'm about. The vid was shot about 10 years ago, on a whim, after a challenge with a friend for me to quickly work out the intro by ear. A pretty fine attemp I think, but who are you, mister smart arse, to assume it sums up what my tastes are?

  • WHAT THE FUCK ON EARTH IS THIS ??? omg and this vocal XD everyone can sing like this :))

  • Comment removed

  • @szkcs Great! So, found a music band and enjoy it.

  • and to think all this was going on while i was sitting at home watching barney and shtting my pampers.

  • God I remember watching this wasted. 40 now you don't half make me feel old. On the other hand saw them a couple of times in the late 80s early 90s and the butthole surfers so it was a great time for music.

  • @lukedeacon this band is one of the most original rock inspirations in history on the grunge/alternative scene. They're just like Mazzy Star, The Beatles, The Meat Puppets, Sex Pistols, Sound Garden, et cetera. One of those bands that came out during a certain time and sent shockwaves through the rock scene. Punk rock ain't too melodic or harmonic either. But it kicks ass. Go listen to Phil Collins or some shit.

  • I was never exposed to Sonic Youth but I just heard them for the first time yesterday

    WIN

  • i feel womanly because im attracted 2 her solely bcuz of her musical ability

  • yeah dude she's fucking fine as hell.

  • that song makes me want to party

  • @lukedeacon Douche

  • @kaiden691: I know "less is more", like Sonic Youth guitar playing talent, but c'mon, you can do better than that!

  • @lukedeacon It may not even be worth answering, but you, being an apparently bona-fide guitarist from what I've seens on your channel, seem pretty fucking ignorant on how Sonic Youth changed everything back then. It's ok you don't like them, a lot don't too, but I love myself the sexy-sluggish feel of this.

  • @Bootleder: You have described me as a "bona-fide" guitarist so on that basis I love you and will always agree with anything you say hereafter!!

  • @lukedeacon - Coming from a guy who features himself playing Van Halen on his page.....that's hilarious.

These guys have been playing together since you were 12, and with tunings that no one had ever thought of at the time.

  • @morecowbell69: Thurston & Lee have zero sense of melody or harmony. That's what makes them shit. Alternative/random tunings and playing a long time with your buddy doesn't = great guitar player. I've been playing guitar since I was 8 and I am the king of wierd tuning. I also appreciate melody and harmony i.e. what's known as music. I win.

  • @lukedeacon Joe Satriani likes Sonic Youth's guitar playing. Are you a better guitar player than Joe Satriani? If not, then you don't win.

  • @akiman10 Of course I'm not better than Joe Satriani and what a ludicrous comment. A) he's probably just trying to ingratiate himself with Sonic Youth fans B) just because he's better than me doesn't disqualify me from not liking something he (says he) likes and C) music isn't an olympic sport about who's better than whom - it's about music, which Sonic Youth are devoid of.

  • @lukedeacon how dumb can you be

  • @Oddell is that a question? Only very dumb people don't know how to use question marks.

  • @lukedeacon it was a rhetorical question. it didn't need to be answered. the fact that you are pointing out punctuation errors on youtube comments on a video for a song you don't like is enough for me to know. read that last sentence over again very slowly and realize how dumb of a thing what you are doing is.

  • @lukedeacon i don't think you've done your homework, chap.

  • @Garkar2006 I know more about music now than you'll ever know in your life, twat.

  • @lukedeacon Sounds like a challenge, my droogy.

  • @lukedeacon zero sense of melody or harmony? Are you fucking kidding me?!

  • @MrChents Sonic youth are inspired by no wave and are often considered noise rock. Melodie and harmony is out of the equation. it's not that they dont have a sens of melody or harmony, they choose to make music without it (which is not a new concept, chinese traditionel music also has no meldoies). So before u start running your mouth and judging, find out what ur talking about.

  • @lukedeacon You don't. :PPPP Go listen to Celine Dion.

  • @dragmio: Funny reply!! If it's any consolation - Celine Dion, to me, is a thousand times worse than Sonic Youth!

  • @lukedeacon Why so much hatred? Its not that by creating music sonic youth is somehow being hostile to you, but I guess being critical to music is reasonable and expected so I'm going to be critical to the trashy guitar work on your channel. Replace some of that technical skill with some of the originality and innovation that Sonic Youth are so well known for.

  • increibles como siempre

  • Then dont take the time writing about how much you hate the band. Im drunk so I took the time hating you

  • @brad0021

if this is garbage to you then don't waste your time trying to understand this kind of music.

  • studmon182 just doesn't get what sonic youth is about.

  • i meant it as a joke

  • you think they are "old". so what? theyre good and particularly important to musicculture. you are nothing, and you never will be something. go listen to lady gaga, shes young. dont waste my time

  • yes, such old!

    AOR

  • @Studmon182

The Rolling Stones looks like a bunch of dinosaur but they can still rock, age doesn't matter in order to rock.

  • yea i meant it as a joke

  • @Studmon182 QUE PILLO QUE SOS EH!!

  • english maybe???

  • @Studmon182 I said you are very pillo.

  • Generally amazing performance, though I'm disappointed that the drummer left out some of the absolutely slamming fills from the album version

  • Fckn awsm !!

  • I love this.

  • Sick version!

  • adoro essa porra, é mto loko!

  • the bass looks like a BC RICH warlock?

  • its a bc rich mockingbird bass guitar

  • Comment removed

  • what bass is that??

  • hee hee kim looks like tom petty :) no disrespect though.

  • To me, the instrumental version of this (Barracuda) is the punkiest metal thing I've ever had.

  • Lo maximo!!!

  • totally agree with magemayu. bunch of fucking hipsters. particularly kevorkian you reek hipster so much it's pretty sad, your video is a hilariously pathetic attempt at noise music. please just enjoy the music and shut the fuck up.

  • There's not a single Sonic Youth vid on YouTube that isn't flooded with trivial arguments.

  • you could probably extend that to most music videos. it makes you not wanna comment anything, but at the same time it's hard to resist, right?

  • I lov llluuuu xD

    great song

  • don't worry about people's backgrounds, just enjoy their great music! that's all that matters :)

  • Hahahaha Sounds like my past....

  • what, when you were a hooker ?

  • i love you i love you i love you

    what's your name?¿

  • kim <3

  • Kim makes me wet. <3

  • boner

  • dude... don't say anything. just shut up, curl up and die someplace warm and dark, sounds ok? has nothing to do with being incapable of understanding any of your bitching. what the fuck are you doing on this page anyway?

  • Suck one Kevorko. The only real correlative between SY and your precious Wire and Gang of Four and whatever else you're claiming derivative is the general energy. And that they launched a thousand bands in city after city. Just like VU. whom you could make an argument about how SY is derivative of. But why bother?

  • Schweeeeeeeeeeeeet

  • Steve Shelley looks like Mike Meyers in this

  • One of the last true bands!

  • what is this shit? i don't know how you could possibly be defining 'bands'.

  • "this shit" is my opinion - get over it

  • There is a reason we can post comments. And what I mean is that there is no possible way you could be defining bands that would make sonic youth one of the last true bands. It just doesn't make any sense... They're a great band, I wouldn't be watching this if they weren't but honestly there's nothing incredibly unique about them.

  • Nothing unique about them? About a hundred other bands that went on to become great found something unique about them. Would we have had alternative rock as we know it without sonic youth? I think not. Unique? I think so. I can't believe we are even debating this.

  • SY were a product of the new york no wave scene, which was in turn an offshoot of the whole post-punk philosophy. Both those movements are far more important than SY by themselves, and in terms of shaping indie music for the past 30 years, they are the movements to look at (besides DIY). Regional movements as well are more important than any one band, and its foolish to even imagine that sonic youth have affected all of alternative rock. Most influential groups ever? Wire, MBV, Serge Gainsbourg.

  • Besides DIY? Sonic Youth WAS DIY!

We wouldn't have MBV if it wasn't for Sonic Youth. The fact that Sonic Youth rose out of an obscure regional movement, going from playing noise shows at art galleries to playing the mainstage at Lollapalooza, makes them unique.

The most important of the alternative rock bands (Dinosaur Jr, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) all owe a debt to Sonic Youth and they would admit that.

  • Ha. Sonic Youth was never D-I-Y. Or maybe you're taking D-I-Y literally, which is not what I meant. I'm talking about the 1-2-3-2 chord scene, mainly in the UK but also somewhat in the states and France.

MBV is independent of SY because Kevin Shields was already doing stuff in '82, far before SY did anything he would have heard.

I don't equate successful and unique, for obvious reasons. And I also wouldn't call any of those bands especially alternative...

  • Oh, Kevin Shields was "doing stuff." My bad. LOL. Give me a break. SY had released half a dozen records before MBV released Isnt Anything. MBV is a great band, equally influential and important. Both bands changed the way guitars were thought of as instruments.

Combing the avant-guard with punk and hardcore I'd say was pretty unique for early 1980s. Then going on to combine pop, Just because Sonic Youth was the best band to come out of that movement doesn't make them all the less unique.

  • So you haven't heard "This Is Your Bloody Valentine" from '84? Don't ridicule what you don't know...

Anyway, combining avant-garde musical styles with punk and hardcore is often defined as postpunk, and Wire were doing it by 1978. And there were many bands who immediately started to try the same sort of thing...

When did I say SY was the best band to come out of No Wave? They weren't- Lydia Lunch probably was. SY were the most popular maybe...

  • Oh so there is no way here Shields heard Confusion is Sex (83), Bad Moon Rising (85), EVOL (86), Sister (87), or Daydream Nation (88) and was possibily influenced by it?!? Kevin Shields even picked Thurston Moore to play the MBV curated ATP in NY. So that settles that.

So because the Wire was doing the same thing a lil earlier that makes Sonic Youth not at all unique? Wire is another great band but there are obvious differences between them and SY.

  • EVOL was the first Sonic Youth release to get any sort of attention overseas. MBV already had one significant release under their belt at that point, and had just pressed a nice little single that would establish the basis for the sound you hear on Isn't Anything.

Shields picking Moore to play at ATP doesn't mean very much, Moore is just recognized as an interesting experimenter with noise right now.

I like how you are completely missing my point. SY were derivative of a greater movement!!!

  • Oh so your saying that MBV was so solid they didn't at all evolve in that span of time, lol.

"Moore is just recognized as an interesting experimenter with noise right now"

Right now? How about for the last 20 years? Lets put their influence on MBV aside and talk about the dozens of other bands influenced by SY, which I really couldn't fit here.

SY was doing their take on No Wave which is certainly unique to any other given bands take on No Wave.

  • Kervorko Dude... like just shut the fuck up. Keep giving piano lessons but stay outta this, huh?

  • Your inability to understand what I'm saying is incredible. I've got some tips, though:

Read s l o w e r. To enhance your comprehension of what I've written so far, you may need to slow down...

Look up stuff you don't believe. That may help...

Listen to a compilation you've probably heard of called 'No New York'. It will immediately make sense to you.

And shut up about stuff you really don't understand, k?

  • BRILLIANT!

  • Unfortunately, collge didn't teach you to punctuate your brainfarts did it? Har har, just being a miserly asshole. I know how you feel, at least I think I do.
