@lukedeacon this band is one of the most original rock inspirations in history on the grunge/alternative scene. They're just like Mazzy Star, The Beatles, The Meat Puppets, Sex Pistols, Sound Garden, et cetera. One of those bands that came out during a certain time and sent shockwaves through the rock scene. @morecowbell69: Thurston & Lee have zero sense of melody or harmony. That's what makes them shit. Alternative/random tunings and playing a long time with your buddy doesn't = great guitar player. I've been playing guitar since I was 8 and I am the king of wierd tuning. I also appreciate melody and harmony i.e. what's known as music. I win.
@akiman10 Of course I'm not better than Joe Satriani and what a ludicrous comment. A) he's probably just trying to ingratiate himself with Sonic Youth fans B) just because he's better than me doesn't disqualify me from not liking something he (says he) likes and C) music isn't an olympic sport about who's better than whom - it's about music, which Sonic Youth are devoid of.
@lukedeacon it was a rhetorical question. it didn't need to be answered. the fact that you are pointing out punctuation errors on youtube comments on a video for a song you don't like is enough for me to know. read that last sentence over again very slowly and realize how dumb of a thing what you are doing is.
@MrChents Sonic youth are inspired by no wave and are often considered noise rock. Suck one Kevorko. The only real correlative between SY and your precious Wire and Gang of Four and whatever else you're claiming derivative is the general energy. And that they launched a thousand bands in city after city. Just like VU. whom you could make an argument about how SY is derivative of. But why bother?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
haha, thats total bullshit. I never said anything about Gang of Four, but Wire and SY, as well as post-punk in general shared quite a bit more than energy. SY have not launched a thousand bands, and honestly i doubt post punk has either. I'd have trouble claiming that SY are derivative of VU, since they had entirely different musical philosophies and backgrounds. But you can try if you want!
Who cares its all the self-indulgent bullshit from a bunch of rich white artschool faggots either way. They claim musical freedom yet them and their fans are typically the most elitist bunch of fags you will find.
There is a reason we can post comments. And what I mean is that there is no possible way you could be defining bands that would make sonic youth one of the last true bands. It just doesn't make any sense... They're a great band, I wouldn't be watching this if they weren't but honestly there's nothing incredibly unique about them.
Nothing unique about them? About a hundred other bands that went on to become great found something unique about them. Would we have had alternative rock as we know it without sonic youth? I think not. Unique? I think so. I can't believe we are even debating this.
SY were a product of the new york no wave scene, which was in turn an offshoot of the whole post-punk philosophy. Both those movements are far more important than SY by themselves, and in terms of shaping indie music for the past 30 years, they are the movements to look at (besides DIY). Regional movements as well are more important than any one band, and its foolish to even imagine that sonic youth have affected all of alternative rock. Most influential groups ever? Wire, MBV, Serge Gainsbourg.
We wouldn't have MBV if it wasn't for Sonic Youth. The fact that Sonic Youth rose out of an obscure regional movement, going from playing noise shows at art galleries to playing the mainstage at Lollapalooza, makes them unique.
The most important of the alternative rock bands (Dinosaur Jr, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) all owe a debt to Sonic Youth and they would admit that.
Ha. Sonic Youth was never D-I-Y. Or maybe you're taking D-I-Y literally, which is not what I meant. I'm talking about the 1-2-3-2 chord scene, mainly in the UK but also somewhat in the states and France.
MBV is independent of SY because Kevin Shields was already doing stuff in '82, far before SY did anything he would have heard.
I don't equate successful and unique, for obvious reasons. And I also wouldn't call any of those bands especially alternative...
Oh, Kevin Shields was "doing stuff." My bad. LOL. Give me a break. SY had released half a dozen records before MBV released Isnt Anything. MBV is a great band, equally influential and important. Both bands changed the way guitars were thought of as instruments.
Combing the avant-guard with punk and hardcore I'd say was pretty unique for early 1980s. Then going on to combine pop, Just because Sonic Youth was the best band to come out of that movement doesn't make them all the less unique.
So you haven't heard "This Is Your Bloody Valentine" from '84? Don't ridicule what you don't know...
Anyway, combining avant-garde musical styles with punk and hardcore is often defined as postpunk, and Wire were doing it by 1978. And there were many bands who immediately started to try the same sort of thing...
When did I say SY was the best band to come out of No Wave? They weren't- Lydia Lunch probably was. SY were the most popular maybe...
Oh so there is no way here Shields heard Confusion is Sex (83), Bad Moon Rising (85), EVOL (86), Sister (87), or Daydream Nation (88) and was possibily influenced by it?!? Kevin Shields even picked Thurston Moore to play the MBV curated ATP in NY. So that settles that.
So because the Wire was doing the same thing a lil earlier that makes Sonic Youth not at all unique? Wire is another great band but there are obvious differences between them and SY.
EVOL was the first Sonic Youth release to get any sort of attention overseas. MBV already had one significant release under their belt at that point, and had just pressed a nice little single that would establish the basis for the sound you hear on Isn't Anything.
Shields picking Moore to play at ATP doesn't mean very much, Moore is just recognized as an interesting experimenter with noise right now.
I like how you are completely missing my point. SY were derivative of a greater movement!!!
Oh so your saying that MBV was so solid they didn't at all evolve in that span of time, lol.
"Moore is just recognized as an interesting experimenter with noise right now"
Right now? How about for the last 20 years? Lets put their influence on MBV aside and talk about the dozens of other bands influenced by SY, which I really couldn't fit here.
SY was doing their take on No Wave which is certainly unique to any other given bands take on No Wave.
i didn't like dirty when i first heard ... too commercial sounding, probably because I didn't get into them until a few years ago when i went to college and was completely in love with Confusion is sex, but still a closeted fan of John mayer until the whole JS thing threw him away and now it's all about SY and PJ Harvey and Sufjan Stevens not really related back to my point the album is incredibly sonic beyond what anyone else can muster even with modern technology and the lyrical content AWE
Unfortunately, collge didn't teach you to punctuate your brainfarts did it? Har har, just being a miserly asshole. I know how you feel, at least I think I do.

They claim musical freedom yet them and their fans are typically the most elitist bunch of fags you will find.

what is this shit? i don't know how you could possibly be defining 'bands'.
KevorkianDude 2 years ago
"this shit" is my opinion - get over it
LukeK79 2 years ago
There is a reason we can post comments. And what I mean is that there is no possible way you could be defining bands that would make sonic youth one of the last true bands. It just doesn't make any sense... They're a great band, I wouldn't be watching this if they weren't but honestly there's nothing incredibly unique about them.
KevorkianDude 2 years ago
Nothing unique about them? About a hundred other bands that went on to become great found something unique about them. Would we have had alternative rock as we know it without sonic youth? I think not. Unique? I think so. I can't believe we are even debating this.
ZiggyZen 2 years ago
SY were a product of the new york no wave scene, which was in turn an offshoot of the whole post-punk philosophy. Both those movements are far more important than SY by themselves, and in terms of shaping indie music for the past 30 years, they are the movements to look at (besides DIY). Regional movements as well are more important than any one band, and its foolish to even imagine that sonic youth have affected all of alternative rock. Most influential groups ever? Wire, MBV, Serge Gainsbourg.
KevorkianDude 2 years ago
Besides DIY? Sonic Youth WAS DIY!
ZiggyZen 2 years ago
KevorkianDude 2 years ago
Oh, Kevin Shields was "doing stuff." My bad. LOL. Give me a break. SY had released half a dozen records before MBV released Isnt Anything. MBV is a great band, equally influential and important. Both bands changed the way guitars were thought of as instruments.
Combing the avant-guard with punk and hardcore I'd say was pretty unique for early 1980s. Then going on to combine pop, Just because Sonic Youth was the best band to come out of that movement doesn't make them all the less unique.
ZiggyZen 2 years ago
So you haven't heard "This Is Your Bloody Valentine" from '84? Don't ridicule what you don't know...
Anyway, combining avant-garde musical styles with punk and hardcore is often defined as postpunk, and Wire were doing it by 1978. And there were many bands who immediately started to try the same sort of thing...
When did I say SY was the best band to come out of No Wave? They weren't- Lydia Lunch probably was. SY were the most popular maybe...
KevorkianDude 2 years ago
Oh so there is no way here Shields heard Confusion is Sex (83), Bad Moon Rising (85), EVOL (86), Sister (87), or Daydream Nation (88) and was possibily influenced by it?!? Kevin Shields even picked Thurston Moore to play the MBV curated ATP in NY. So that settles that.
So because the Wire was doing the same thing a lil earlier that makes Sonic Youth not at all unique? Wire is another great band but there are obvious differences between them and SY.
ZiggyZen 2 years ago
EVOL was the first Sonic Youth release to get any sort of attention overseas. MBV already had one significant release under their belt at that point, and had just pressed a nice little single that would establish the basis for the sound you hear on Isn't Anything.
Shields picking Moore to play at ATP doesn't mean very much, Moore is just recognized as an interesting experimenter with noise right now.
I like how you are completely missing my point. SY were derivative of a greater movement!!!
KevorkianDude 2 years ago
Oh so your saying that MBV was so solid they didn't at all evolve in that span of time, lol.
"Moore is just recognized as an interesting experimenter with noise right now"
Right now? How about for the last 20 years? Lets put their influence on MBV aside and talk about the dozens of other bands influenced by SY, which I really couldn't fit here.
SY was doing their take on No Wave which is certainly unique to any other given bands take on No Wave.

Your inability to understand what I'm saying is incredible. I've got some tips, though:
Read s l o w e r. To enhance your comprehension of what I've written so far, you may need to slow down...
Look up stuff you don't believe. That may help...
Listen to a compilation you've probably heard of called 'No New York'. It will immediately make sense to you.
And shut up about stuff you really don't understand, k?

i didn't like dirty when i first heard ... too commercial sounding, probably because I didn't get into them until a few years ago when i went to college and was completely in love with Confusion is sex, but still a closeted fan of John mayer until the whole JS thing threw him away and now it's all about SY and PJ Harvey and Sufjan Stevens not really related back to my point the album is incredibly sonic beyond what anyone else can muster even with modern technology and the lyrical content AWE
