Saw them In 1981 and they opened for FEAR It was called toys for twats.Great show in a circus tent.Absolutly nuts!!These guys were the shit in the 80's!!
I've loved Boingo from the 1st time I heard them. A recent acquaintance heard them for the 1st time last yr and said they sound like Duran Duran. I'd have smacked him upside da haid if he wasn't the bosse's golden boy. gemspackle
@jawkneekat I hear ya! If you lived in po-dunk-no-where-midwest like I did, this was what you LIVED for! Did not see them at the first US Festival, (was 12 yrs old at the time), but man did I start concert going at 14 yrs old in the "scary" ol town of chicago, when these bands came into town.... Drove my parents nuts... But MV3 did that to ya in the day...
This was my favorite after-school show. Like "Nightflight" on USA Network, you DID NOT miss MV3. Oingo Boigo were so good! Saw them at the US Festival about this time and consider it one of the best shows of my life. Elfman=Genius.
Wow, Oingo Boingo on MV3 - takes me back to jr. high days rushing home after school to catch music videos - this was before MTV came around. One of my concert highlights was catching them general admin at Cal Poly Pomona, very very fun show, esp at 14.
loved going to see them at every Halloween!! It was a tradition and we went to all sold out concerts at the Universal for the Farewell Series...........awesome
Damn! You too? I used to love watching my favorite groups perform as well as watching their videos being aired, for free too on regular broadcast TV! Now, we can't even find any TV channels that would just outright play music videos, whether now digital broadcast, cable or satellite. MTV & VH1 need to rename themselves into Reality TV or the likes because only at specific times late at night would they even consider airing any music videos. They used to have at the very least a top 10 countdown.
I wish there would be a TV version of AltNation channel on satellite radio or better yet, a video feed simulcast of all the songs they play! And play them in HD too! Now that would rock! They should air various shows featuring alternative music of the early 80's, the latter 80's, the 90's and modern alternative with even some grunge, post modern, some electronica and of course, you gotta have Industrial! Can some rich Apple-savy person come up with this type of broadcast channel? Make it so nr1!
I love Oingo Boingo. The only problem with Oingo Boingo is they are too great of a band. Making all other music seem inferior. When a listener is under the influence of Boingo They will start to see flaws in all other music. Bands like the Dead may seem too bluesy or folksy. Floyd may seem too slow. Devo's great I just watched them perform complete sets of Are we not men? and Freedom of choice but I think Elfman Is the best songwriter of the century.
I definitely understand where you are coming from the sheer talent of Elfman's compositions and his music with boingo is incredible but if you want some other things to listen to with similar talents check out yes or muse both excellent musically
Great old video of 2 of my favorite Oingo Boingo songs...
...and great messages too, don't be afraid & think for yourself.
I especially like the psychotic stares Danny threw out during Grey Matter...he is a master of that creepy theatrical look.
The dual balaphones are great too...I especially like the farewell performance where he is just jumpin' up and down and beating on them like a six year old having a great time.
I'd love to see just 1 more halloween show by them. always their best.
I respect his work on Tim Burton's films but I'd trade all of them for one more Haloween night live show of Oingo Boingo. There's a good tribute band in LA called Dead Man's Party which I recommend, by the way.
This is Danny Elfman and is and was a genious before his time.Occupation now is a composer, singer, record producer, actor, voice actor behind tons of great movies like Tim Burtons creations to Bat Man! Also uncle to Jenna Elfman the actress.
There you go! See if you can get an actual job involving film scoring/composition when you graduate (a lot have trouble with the getting a job that pertains to our degree) and try to get one out in the L.A. area (I think he still resides there most of the time). Good luck!
(krisvirgin) Actually, Danny's the uncle of Jenna's husband, Bodhi Elfman. My Bad and knew it was something like this, Thx to Harmonie66 for correcting me. Kris
Holy crap I don't think I've seen this since I was in 5th grade of something. I remember this MV3 and it being my first exposure to Oingo Boingo and being completely mesmerized. Amazing to find this!!!!! Thanks to the poster. Awesome.
boingo always put on badass shows at the hollywood palladium danny elfman is a badass musical genius who now does movie soundtracks i sure do miss seeing this band live in person
I remember seeing them at the Palladium a few times. They would play a couple shows between Christmas and New Years. They did it for a couple years, actually. 85 to 87 I think. After that they usually played at Irvine Meadows, Universal, or the Greek. Yuck! You needed to see them play in a club or dance hall to have the best experience. Seats just get in the way.
Kerry Hatch decided to leave the band in 1984. He performed on the So-Lo album (which was released as an Elfman album but was technically a Boingo album). However, John Avila came in just in time to replace him and shoot the Gratitude video.
Thanks for the info. I ask because my wife is related to John Avila and I never really followed them. I do think that Elfman is a music genious and I respect all that he does.
This is so cool. I was 11 years old in 1982 and I watched MV3 quite often. I remember seeing and hearing OIngo Boingo for the first time with this performance.
They repeated the show and I remember putting my cassesette recorder up to the tv.
I would listen to that tape constantly.
I still have it and I still love Boingo (CD's now)
Many thanks for posting this. It brings back a ton of memories
Either they were really, really, REALLY, REALLY TIGHT that day and precisely duplicated the albums music note-for-note... or they were lip-synching for TV.
Still... It's tragic that I missed seeing them live.
Totally Awesome. I remember the live show at Great America - Fabulous! NO ONE can duplicate - sadly the record companies won't let it. Not pretty enough. Pretty is boring! Danny is a GOD!
Yeah, Leon dubbed them "rumba-phones" when he created them. Xylophones actually look observably different from them. It drove me nuts as I couldn't tell the difference between the Boingo "rumba-phones" and balafons until I saw Leon's comment that he built a balafon that could be used with western instruments, thus rumba-phones.
Is that Kurt Russell introducing them at the very beginning?
It's easy to tell which Oingo Boingo clips are older or newer because Danny had his hair shorter in the early '80's and then he grew it out from the mid '80's and beyond.
I know, most of the fun of watching live O.B. performances is Danny's antics on stage. There isn't, wasn't and never will be a frontman who could emulate the deranged brilliance that was Elfman's performance style.
