Brilliant movie, really does a good job capturing the stress of that kind of situation, not that I've experienced it personally but it seems to be in line with the stories you hear from troops and vets

Just read the book this is based on by Mark Bowden, it's a great read! He painstakingly recreated the battle and now his work is a mandatory part of the curriculum at war colleges

I agree, this was a failed operation based on how the US overestimated the enemy numbers and failed to complete the mission objectives.. However, a force of about 50 men in different areas of the city were able to keep back hundreds of militants as well as thousands of men moving around with knives, clubs, and picking up fallen soldier's weapons to fight back.. the statistics only show the elitism of the troops.

I think KINGZ44four is just some kid who has no idea how war really is. I agree, this was a failed operation based on how the US overestimated the enemy numbers and failed to complete the mission objectives.. However, a force of about 50 men in different areas of the city were able to keep back hundreds of militants as well as thousands of men moving around with knives, clubs, and picking up fallen soldier's weapons to fight back.. the statistics only show the elitism of the troops.

At the end of the line, no one forced them to go. Just as no one forced them to go into Vietnam, Central America, Iraq, etc. the list goes on. US government enforces their foreign policies and objectives by sending troops to combat to do it by force. Don't cry later when you lose lives, if you don't want to get burned don't play with fire. And please, don't call them heroes, they are mere pawns in US foreign interests and schemes.

@KINGZ44four If you meant that they were trying to capture Aidid you are wrong. The rangers and the delta force were trying to capture the Aidids top ministers, which they by the way did capture.

@KINGZ44four no, the american soldiers defended themselves from enemy fire, the "unarmed civilians" you claim were killed because they were aiding the militiamen or they picked up weapons against the americans, in a situation like that if anyone points a gun at you you shoot them, no questions...
maybe the americans shot women, or even children BUT not because they are murderers but because the somalis were in some way a THREAT otherwise they wouldn have been on the streets o got shot...

Not only did these hundred men defend themselves against an enemy than outnumbered them 1 to 30 but they did so without leaving a man behind. Politics be damned. If those men were allowed to continue the mission they would have had Aidid in a week.

If you have thousands of men with just clubs and knives in their own city, holding them back without being completely overrun is quite amazing.. but this was with militia and armed civilians mixed in shooting at them. The fact they got out alive is amazing in the eyes of anyone with experience..

@KINGZ44four It was a failed mission, however the fact that there were thousands of civilians mixed in with hundreds of hostiles, and with civilian and tribal fighters that were able to instantly replenish their fallen, it is extremely amazing from an experienced standpoint that around 100 men divided (not even all together in one place) were able to keep from being overrun and made it out alive. The casualty rate is just a way of boasting their elitism : )

there's always going to be war whether its america going into foreign countries or some other nation in the future. that's what the message of the movie was and why they quoted plato in the beginning. so the only thing these soldiers can do is watch each others back and why there were so focused on leaving no one behind. ask any veteran. they might believe in what they're doing out there but in the end no matter what they're beliefs they're fighting for their fellow soldier
