See, I'm a powerlifter at my high school and I'm interested in participating in olympic training in college, I weigh 187 pounds but I understand that the Olympics goes by kg. What is a good average weight for the two lifts in my class?
@DavidsHeir you would be in the 85kg class the world records for this category is 187 kg snatch, 218 kg clean and jerk. Good luck making it to the Olympics
@amusingisthedawn The first lift in the sport of weightlifting that is competed in the olympics is the snatch lift. It's one fluid lift. The second lift which is the second contested lift is the clean and jerk. you are correct in that it's split. The total for the best of both lifts determines the highest total. In case of a tie, the lighter lifter is determined the winner.
@amusingisthedawn I wouldn't do these lifts unless you really want to take time to learn them correctly. Squats and deadlifts are very slow and are so much less technically advanced than the explosive lifts. However, doing the explosive lifts develops your whole body in ways that doing slow lifts (bench, squats, deads) can't. It's so worth it to take the time to learn these lifts to earn the highest most athletic abilities offered by barbell training.
a trainer noticed it and told me to use a closer grip it helped immensly and i added 10 kilos that very day , so its really a perfect angle which may be the same for everyone but even if the angle was the same , the width on the bar would be different depending on the length of arms
late but i'd like to discuss it , it depends not your size and arm length ofcourse, if im tall and ur short and weboth grip the bar with the exact same shoulder angle , my grip would be wider (bcause im tall right?)
also i used to grip it really wide , so that i can get it higher on the second pull , makes sense right ? but i didnt realise that it made me lose alot of power and made the hook grip very hard and painful and also threw me forward for some reason
@athleticchak Are you asking me or coach Ho? If you want to learn weightlifting, get in contact with your local weightlifting club. If you have any questions just ask me, I'm happy to help.
This may be a dumb question.. But can you front squat more or clean more?

How do you resolve wrist pain. when i load the weights my wrist will hurt
MadManATA 3 months ago
@MadManATA Loosen off your wrists before training, do some wrist stretching. Keep training and the pain will go away.

@capscave Thanks for that. I don't compete, so I don't really do the explosive lifts. I do squats and deadlifts to stay fit and prevent injury.

I don't get it. Why is the guy just dropping during the snatches and cleans? Why won't he demonstrate the HANG clean?

That form is spot on!

Pretty much perfection.

how wide should your grips be when doing a snatch?
OrlyDudeGuy 1 year ago
@OrlyDudeGuy I think it depends on your style. Try different widths and see what works for you I guess. Sorry I'm not much help.

@weightliftingisgreat
Hi there! What are your thoughts on learning the lifts uncoached? Is it a very bad idea? As in I am better off squatting and doing speed squats?
Thanks.

@ViKtoricus Get a coach. I mean someone who has done weightlifting for years and years at a high level. Not some Crossfit gym monkey.

Phenomenal command and technique. Coach Ho obviously has done a lot of weight lifting.
