Kitahara has a good handle on this piece. Tempo is so crucial here. You almost want to go at varying tempi simultaneously to build the feeling of impact between glacial stasis and breakneck violence. Wanting to capture the revolutionary collision but without reverting to "program" music.
It's kinda supposed to be a bit mechanical. But I think most performances of this symphony tend to be too fast. It just makes it sound smaller. I have an old LP version of it where the 2nd movement is apocalyptic, a slower tempo makes the textures and the resonances bloom a lot more.
Quantum 79: This is not a Chinese National Orchestra. This is from Japan, the well know NHK Orchestra directed by Kitahara . ¡Read the display ¡and enjoy it.
Most people don't realize it, but Shostakovich was the last of the "Great Giants"; the last of the Late Romantics in the spirit of Mahler, Elgar and R. Strauss. At the time of his death in the mid- 1970's he had no peers; he was only 69. think what might have been had he lived to a ripe old age of say 90 or so - like R. Strauss!! Maybe 15 symphonies and 15 string quartets?? BTW, this NHK version of 11th, final movement is f-----g excellant! Much preferable to the Stokowski or Gregiev
I do not know... But something is not pleasant to me in this execution... No, I have nothing against the Chinese National Republic. But nevertheless "kixes" were audible =) That at french horns, that at pipes and trombones! Gergiev' the orchestra plays much more brightly and whether more more plausibly that...
His directions are right on time. But hands down BEST EVER CONDUCTOR of this piece goes to: Eliahu Inbal.

All the strings seem too stacatto; there's a lack of unity among the strings.

I totally agree.
I think that after Shostakovich's days.. music has gone down hill.

Do you know Andrades's first Symphony? it's a great work made as a tribute to Shostakovich in the hundredth anniversary of his birth (2006).
You may hear it in my account.
Regarding this performance... absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!

Shostakovich did write 15 symphonies. 12-15 are not often palyed.

Solid conducting, no frills, beat time, kick butt.
Much more aggressive than the somewhat lazy performance of Shosty 10th on this same channel.

This is not a good performance, it is a GREAT one. Who is the conductor? Very clean playing.
