Top of the Pops was advertised as being live. It was well known in reality that songs were recorded earlier in the day in the studio, and then mimed to live during broadcast. Tracy amongst others used this to make a joke on the audience. The drummer for Status Quo once dropped a drum stick, left his kit to go and get, while the drumming continued.

By "live" I think it was *supposed* to mean that it's transmitted from the studio as it's performed, not that the actual singing's live.

Apparently the original intent of TOTP from the beginning was that you could hear the song as it was on record, which obviously meant it was going to be mimed. They changed that on occasion, of course.
