  • haha why are they singing in hairbrushes???

  • @drollic Because in the promo video (which was shot at Jake Riviera's house, incidentally) they portrayed schoolgirls pretending to be popstars and singing into hairbrushes. After all, the average 1983 schoolgirl didn't have microphones.

  • singing in hairbrushes? WHAT?

  • singing , acting, writing, dancing... she does everything showbiz related. I'm impressed and even humbled. she's no ditzy diva.

  • i remember seeing this as an 11 year old on top of the pops and falling in love, what memories

  • @paddyhyland I was twice you age and fell in love with her at the same time. She lived round the corner from where I worked and I always hoped she'd pass and say hi - she didn't, but I did meet her mum once in Southall.

  • tracy ullman the most talented female in showbiz by far !!

  • very similar to Grease - We Go Together

  • 1:43 sooooooo cool and funny :D

  • The girl on the left is Sick notes wife from Londons Burning.

  • omg u r soooo right x

  • great vid, brings back some good memories, the dancer on the left of tracey went on to have a role in londons burning the series as sicknotes wife.. strange how life moves on..bernie

  • i thought this was going to be awful but i quite like it

  • Reminds me of Saturday night Pajamma Parties in the Sixties singing Leslie Gore and Diana Ross songs into our Hairbrushes!

  • that looks like a hairbrush in her hand.

  • @nahim55 it is

  • In America, we go off our pins if pop stars dont at least appear to be singing with microphones in their hands and I dont know why. Then again, we are kind of delusional anyway, but if someone sang with hairbrushes in their hands on an American stage there would be a revolution. When Jessica simpsons sister , ashley got caught lip syncing it virutally ended her career. You cant burst the illusion on an american stage, we are to fickle.

  • elke dag hoor ik deze nummer op me werk op Q music LMAO

  • my uncle used to fancy her!!

  • Tracey has never looked better .I loved this video when it first came out and its still better than anything in the charts today

  • If they sang live it would be shit ! As it is its great and she looks fantastic !

  • geweldig from holland

  • I bought the album...on vinyl...still have it and still play it...Irma Thomas did the original....I like both...I just wish it was faster so I can really bang it...Ha!

  • God, wouldn't you boys?

  • Think you need to be on Speed to keep up with this lol - Used to do that - The Hairbrush thing lol

  • The hairbrushes ruin any of the usual pretence of them singing live... classic Tracey

  • Top of the pops! was any group live?

  • I love the way Tracy uses hairbrushes on the stage, so she doesn't even try to fake it..

  • emmy, here in america , people fly off the handle if stars at least dont appear to be singing their music. When Milli Vanilli got caught lip sincing, and Ashley simpsons sister got caught lip synching america audiences booed them. At least in britian, its more about the performance than the actual on stage singing.

  • @blackshogun77

Well, the two guys from Milli Vinilli wasn't using their own voices. It was another person singing.

  • sometimes they were but in the 80's that was the exception rather than the rule.

  • hairbrushes XD

    lovely

  • This was the first record i ever bought with my own cash

  • Still good....One of the first videos on MTV back in the early 80's . Tis is a different version than the original.

  • I think you are thinking of "They Don't Know About Us". This song was never released in the US. Our Big Loss cause this song is great.

  • No way... I would wait for that song to come on MTV's videos everyday..someone else posted that there was a different video when it came out and later MTV has her "They Dont Know About Us" with her with curlers in her hair at a supermarket with good ol Sir Paul McCartney .

  • I love Tracey, but this vid is like Irma Thomas on helium

  • it's crazy i'm a youngster and i love her i've gone througha nd watched all her old stuff and funny thing is, this song was played at my prom..........that was last year.

  • Seiing Tracey Ullman like this and nowadays makes my pants feel stretched and small, LOL. HOT WOMAN.

  • thought the girl on the left was well cute back in the day - still looks hot!

  • u are so right mate, hot hot

  • Me too! It's amazing how you can develop a mega crush just by seeing someone on a pop vid! Just fantastic to look at just sexy in everything she does, the way she moves, smiles etc. She's that actress Amanda Dickinson she seems to have gone off the radar of late.

  • dance session in riccorda-disco madrid españa,from youtube...la honorable sociedad

  • whats wi the fuckin hairbrushes?? haha......no way !!

  • Tracey gets it and always did and on these shows they had to lip sync their songs and always held microphones without cords = (before cordless was invented). Tracey said why not just hold a friggin hairbrush = and she did.

  • awesome! I must be a crazy 17 year old for liking this right...

  • Nothing wrong with people our age liking any song from the past.

I think this is awesome and i'm eighteen.

  • tracy has that english woman sauciness

  • i have this on org- ep .flor-breaker

  • great song. it gets stuck in my head^^

  • I love the Detroit Cobras version of this song.

  • Tracy looks like Sandra Bernhard in this video

  • I am sleepy and going to dream about that black haired Goddess on the right-stage left.

    i i fell for her.

    \__|_0

It would be just my bad luck she is married or still married today:(

  • Sorry mate, you might not know her but that woman is Rosemarie Ford and she is married to the British actor Robert Lindsay... She herself was a TV presenter in the UK.

    And she has two kids

  • I was refering to orrjamesjames...

  • common knowledge??? not to me??? who cares!!!!! so wot!!!!

  • ronduit zielig commentaar

  • How do you know that? Long time lover??

  • It was common knowledge in Enland 25 years ago.........just before she moved to the states, to start her own TV show.funnily enough produced ny Alan Mckeowns production company.........

  • Hummm...I guess she lucked out then! Good for her!

  • Yet if a man acted just the same way you'd never say the same things about him!

  • Yes I would, but would call him a twat rather than a hag...............

  • The Usa got our Tracy and we got Ruby Wax... So not fair :(

  • this sounds like shout copycats

  • They can sing. They can dance. They're great performers, and they're beautiful too! Whatever happened to women like this?

  • The Brit girls are soooo fine.......LOVE YOU TRACEY!!!!! Only Tracey Ullman would sing into her hairbrush like we all did in our bedrooms learning the lyrics to the newest 45RPM records.....THANKS FOR POSTING!!!!

    Tappin' Toes In TEXAS!!!!

  • why are they singing into hairbrushes?

  • Because they did on the video. And it didn't matter really cos that prog was all about miming, not singing live.

  • " But i can't follow through"...SHOCKING

  • shes magic love her

  • I always thought Tracy was such a great entertainer, but she never got the recognition she deserves.

  • 声が好き(・∀・)元JUDY AND MARYのYUKIがそっくり!

  • Damn, I love this song!

  • Just ain't no pop princess today who could do this. None Not one black or white - none. So hate all you want - they can't do it and if you want just have them try to actually sing - they can't.

  • lmao i think the pop princesses lip sing just as good today as they did back then :P

  • To all the comments lamenting Tracey's performance :

    1) Grab yourself a dictionary

    2) Look up the term "tongue-in-cheek"

    3) Come back and apologise

  • it's just a song people. i don't like to listen to the crap called rap. those people are alway's complaining about money, girls, and other stupid things.

  • is she singing into a brush, at least she doesn't pretend to be singing like Brittney who can't lip sync as well as Tracy

  • uh, i love the way you beat your hips babe !!

  • cool, tho the promo is the better, but still, this is such a perfect pop song covered magnificently. TFP!

  • tolli x33~ ^^

  • Great song and love the skirts!

  • LOVE her spoofing herself on the Live show in LA in '05 - hilarious

  • What a talented woman, i just got the single second hand and wanted to listen to the song, nicer than i expect. She is amazing in *A DIRTY SHAME* by John Waters. She can do everything...love you Tracy.

  • buen temazo saludos desde españa youtube la honorable sociedad

  • tip top jadoressssssss

  • Tracey - a classic 80s girl. (That is meant as a comment - put your own meaning into it...)

  • soo very fun i love it very very veryloves

  • Great video, thanks for posting it. Breakaway was written by Jackie DeShannon and first recorded by Irma Thomas in 1964. DeShannon says Tracey's version is her favourite.

  • Listen to Brotha Lynch

  • These two girls are miming, they are not on the song at all, it is Kirsty MacColl doing the actual backing with Tracey.

  • Actually, Kirsty only provided 2 tracks AND backing vocals on the album - They Don't Know and You Broke My Heart In 17 Places.

  • geiler "60er"pop song, ey

  • buena cancion un saludo desde españa myspace, com :la honorable sociedad

  • lmao... Is she holding a brush? I love Tracey Ullman!

  • Top of the Pops was advertised as being live. It was well known in reality that songs were recorded earlier in the day in the studio, and then mimed to live during broadcast. Tracy amongst others used this to make a joke on the audience. The drummer for Status Quo once dropped a drum stick, left his kit to go and get, while the drumming continued.

  • By "live" I think it was *supposed* to mean that it's transmitted from the studio as it's performed, not that the actual singing's live.

Apparently the original intent of TOTP from the beginning was that you could hear the song as it was on record, which obviously meant it was going to be mimed. They changed that on occasion, of course.

  • lekker nr. !

  • Great

  • i think the girl to the left the blinde girl is debbie wilson that famous singer

  • Trust me, It's Amanda Dickinson.

  • Quand je vois cette nana,ça me rappel moi à l'époque de cette chanson, trop cool!

  • Far OUT! I had just dug up the vid for "They Don't Know", and got curious --- I didn't know a vid had ever been done for "Breakaway". This whole album is just a *miracle*, and it's even more fun to have visual performances of it. Thank you!

  • There was actually a "real" videoclip made for Breakaway... Tracey and the two girls as teenage girls mimicking pop singers in their bedroom, with hair brushes as micros and incredible 60's style outfits. Very well done and hilarious !

  • The album is a miracle because it was produced by the late great Kirsty MacColl.

  • The album was actually produced by Peter Collins on most of the tracks except for Bobby's Girl which was produced by Steve O'Donnell and You Broke My Heart In 17 Places which was co-produced by Kirsty MacColl and Gavin Povey.

  • Oh yes!

  • you are a wanker of a DJ

  • I recognize the girl on the left. Who is she?

  • She is Amanda Dickinson who played "Jean Quigley" in Londond Burning. My occupation and my knowledge of this are purely co-incidental!!

  • She is Amanda Dickinson who played Jean Quigley in Londons Burning. My occupation and my knowledge of this is purely co-incidelntal!!

  • why is the original video removed from voutube?

    can someone upload again plzzzzzz?

  • No, that's not Julie Kavner. Julie was an established and well-known TV actor long before her association with Tracey Ullman or The Simpsons.

  • lovley Tracy...

  • I remember the video to this. memories....

  • princess63 I responding to jbrincka the girl on the right is not julie kavner. who agrees?

  • I agree...totally not Miss Kavner

  • Love Love Love Tracy ullman! Hope you all noticed the girl on the right is julie kavner (the voice of many charcters on the simpsons and If you're old enough....rhoda morgenstein's little sister)

  • There are several very good songs on the album. 'They Don't Know' was a huge hit. You couldn't get away from it for several weeks.

  • I can just imagine bananarama sitting there watching the telly on a couch on a thursday night in 1983 and there jaws hitting the floor and thinking "Must try harder", to themselves!

  • I love the hair brush / microphone

  • Sweet Tracey Ullman... =P

  • uhu very 80's look at the hair :D but I like the song!

  • wow....1983...no wonder it's "very 80s"

  • The look is very 80s, but musically it harks back to the early-1960s "girl group" sound. Albeit being played at 78 RPM instead of 45 :)

If someone asks me what that means, I'm going to slap them for making me feel old :-P

  • very 80s.
