  • she looks darn good for 71

  • I saw this show when I was a kid-wow! To see Janis on tv, at that time, was amazing. To see Swanson, was double wow! Both of these ladies, and they were ladies, were bigger than life, and real. We have, thanks to all the PC, nothing this original or authentic.

  • Seeing flashy, glamorous, fun, people like these 2 ladies makes me feel like I've lived a sheltered, dreary existence so far. I agree with Gloria's view on romance, marriage & children. =:)

  • getting married 5 times isn't marriage.ps when Janis laughed it was a whole hearted laugh.

  • Gloria looked so polished and stylized, while Janis looked like she smelled.

  • Beautiful actress and person!

  • Her skin is so smooooth! Janis is trash! BUT...Gloria was a tramp in her day!

  • @MrThesheenster Plastic surgery.

  • Uh-oh, saw a flicker of 'What you say to me bitch' come out on Gloria's face!

  • Janis Joplin is probably known nowadays more for her drug overdose than any music she have made.

  • @PungiFungi You are talking utter pungi-fungi! Twat.

  • @farfisa , I am sure Janis Joplin did her fans a great service by overdosing on drugs.

  • @PungiFungi I wasn't sure that she OD'd on drugs. I can't find that documented anywhere. You must be single and ugly (and very lonely) to make such crass statements. Go and have your nightly wank and think of me breathing heavily into your lobular-orifice - it's your only outlet. xxx

  • @farfisa , Janis Joplin could have lived on and made more great music for her fans. Instead they are now lost and angry, like you.:-)

  • @PungiFungi I think Joplin would possibly have been dead by now - it's 2012 now silly! Now dear, I'm not angry I'm just enjoying playing with you a little. Hell I'm not even a Joplin fan - gave it a go but I'm more into bubblegum. I'm here because I'm checking out Gloria Swanson. Now are you feeling stupid (and angry too). Anyway enough about me Pungent Fungus sorry I mean Pungi Fungi.xxx. Oh and get this buster, you haven't got a creative bone in your body, never had and never will. NSUAEMC.x

  • @farfisa , so you do admit in being a troll? :-)

  • @PungiFungi Most certainly Pungy. I am a troll, I am a bitch, I am a whore, I am a cock, I'm a slut, I'm a hooker, I'm a blue movie, I'm whatever you want me to be.xxx

  • @farfisa , in that case, you are an angry bitter Janis Joplin fan then.:-)

  • @PungiFungi darling I draw the line at fandom. But if it makes you happy I'll wear the dress for one night only. Fuck me hard tho. Oh and it's a shame that the numerous literary references have gone way over your head. Not surprising for a hick. Man - I love being your friend!

  • @farfisa , back pedaling now? LOL. Don't offer if you can't deliver.

  • @PungiFungi You can back pedal me anytime you want.

  • @farfisa , as you said yourself : "I'm whatever you want me to be". :-)

  • GLORIA SWANSON TO JANIS JOPLIN -, AND WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU ?

  • she's quite sexy for an old bird

  • wow. amazing. what a pair!

  • JJ really was trailer trash, wasn't she!

  • Out of respect, I would think Janis Joplin would've stood up upon Miss Swanson's entry. After all, she's only one of Hollywood's belle dames.

  • I love Gloria Swanson, she is so beautiful here! Thank you for posting this video. But I dislike the title saying she "bitches about romanceless marriage". Miss Swanson is not "bitching" (I hate that term!), she's just giving her opinion, which is actually very sweet.

  • What a strange thing to happen! I'm a straight girl but I seem to have fallen madly in love with Gloria Swanson! My, my...

  • What a peculiar combination for an interview!

  • Gloria was an intelligent fascinating lady. Beautiful expressive eyes, and well spoken. Janis is cute, but she isn't a very interesting person to interview, she couldn't articulate herself well. I still enjoy her music though.

  • @FaithIsAnnoyed I didn't see Gloria knocking anyone out with her wit and charm. She seemed rather boring as a guest. Janice was much more entertaining.

  • @lowelljohn68 not really surprising she topped hereself.

  • 2 months later Janis would be dead - what a waste.

  • @remymartain yes exactly...she died oct 1970 and this was taken last august ryt?

  • @belle26ramirez Wow.

  • Its like Madonna and Courtney Love in the same room together.

  • Can you believe that they schedule Gloria Swanson & Janis Dope-head Joplin on the same night? What a contrast in the quality of entertainment, even in 1970!

  • @Jeetyet Dicks guests were generally people that he had a genuine interest in. Which is why the contrasts seem odd compared to nowadays when people are often only on talk shows to promote their current work.

  • GLORIA WAS BORN IN 1899 NYC, DIED 1981 AGE 84, HER CAREER STAR IN 1914 SHES A REALLY HOLLYWOOD TRUE STAR!!*

  • how classy.... how do u do? lol but i mean its janis... if she would have gotten up it wouldnt b her.

  • What the fuc´´´´ is on her head??? It IS from august 1970? - right?? And she is wearing a wig too - is´nt she? There is someting wrong with her eyelashes too, I think. Is anything about her natural?? except the bags on the sides and her big nose??

  • the gguy looks like ed harris.

  • Her voice

  • Yes, why couldn't Janis at least stand up when Gloria entered the set? Come on girl, have some class!

Loved the way Gloria dressed here ..... very vaudevillesque!

  • OH MY GLORIA WAS STILL A BEAUTIFUL CHICK.. SHE MAY HAVE BEEN ABT 60 I THINK

  • @sierria64 she was 71 there ;)

  • How odd to have these two on the same stage.

  • This could never happen today!!

  • Wow, what an outfit! That's style and class. And what a memory, to come up with the names of the plays you did on the road in split seconds. Remarkable.

  • I love everything to do with you Janis. Hopefully i'll see you one day !!!

  • now that's charisma

  • Fascinating

  • @MistressLord I strongly agree with that. Unfortunately, the music is dying, I don't know when did it begin dying, but it sure is...

  • She is so beautiful, and her voice is so seductive.

  • The first lady I remember who ate brown rice! When an interviewer asked her (1975) : How does your skin remain so smooth?(Or something like that)Her answer was: BROWN RICE! Haha, that was an eye-opener to me...

  • That was a great famous Star and the american shall be proud of those and not of such of so so so Stars like janis.

  • 2 of the fiercest women in show-biz! May they both rest peacefully.

    GLORIA SWANSON (1899-1983)

    JANIS JOPLIN (1943-1970)

  • That suit of Dick Cavett's is SO 1970's ... LOL

I had to turn down the brightness on my computer screen.

Btw Gloria is exquisite, a beaut.

  • holy crap that was funny. "I wanna do his head. Do you know what i mean by that?" "Yes, *snort* I do!" Too funny! Janice was quicker than lightning.

  • effing flawless at 70!!! the stars are ageless...

  • two legends in a single room!

  • I cannot believe she was 71 here. She was incredibly sharp and youthful, such a classy lady

  • Why are the Gloria fans spitting on Janis, and the Janis fans spitting on Gloria? They were both legends in their own ways. Plus, they don't seem to have nothing against each other... I am a Janis fan but I respect Gloria, I think that's what they would have wanted...

  • Don't know how to take Swanson sometimes. She seems a little stiff to me or too serious sometimes. Also, a long term marriage will have some "dull" moments which you have to accept if the marriage is going to last.

  • can believe that idiot put janis joplin junkie next to gloria swanson

  • By the way, Swanson was 70 or 71 years old here...Not bad, eh?

  • I think Dick Cavett is a very humble talkshow host. Not like Oprah, who is full of herself, intimidating and very proud. Cavett is a very soft spoken man. Wish talkshow hosts of today would learn from him.

  • Cavett looks very uncomfortable interviewing Swanson. Gloria is a typical Hollywood slut, having had adulterous affairs with many men including Joseph Kennedy who was old enough to be her father.

  • @onthewall888 "Typical Hollywood slut"? She was the most famous star of her generation, revered by millions. There was nothing "typical" about her, you jerk.

  • @beeroosterm At least you did not deny that she was a slut.

  • Janis Joplin is dressed like a 80s trashy pop star. I did not know she dyed her hair in different colors. Gloria seems to be classier and younger looking than Janis is. Too bad her drug habits and bad hippie lifestyle made her look older than 29.

  • If only all chat shows were as good as this.

  • Gloria Swanson was the FIRST great Hollywood star to "go under the knife". Among Hollywood intimates it's a well-known fact. She was Joe Kennedy's whore too.

  • Reminds me of Gwen Stefani...hey, same initials.

  • its messed how ppl watch others on the tube and rate them as human beings, one you dont truly know them and two who are you to judge.

  • GLORIA SWANSON & JANIS JOPLIN.....

    thats' f...ng brilliant !!

  • you know what they are talking about DICK!!! ; )

  • what a pair! WOW!!

  • Gloria Swanson was married to the monstrous Wallace Beery, one of the very greatest actors, who fed her a drug to induce a miscarriage, and had a long-running affair with Joseph Kennedy, who allegedly made his wife Rose serve them breakfast in bed. Kennedy was eventually amply repaid when he had his stroke decades later and Rose left him on the floor and went to Mass instead of getting him the medical attention he so desperately needed.

  • @Onlymusical Go Rose!

  • @CorieFaulkner Yes, she lived on and on and on while her husband, who'd allegedly had her serve him and Gloria Swanson breakfast in bed back in the '30s, went from making lengthy secret phone calls to his son Jack the president every day to being unable to speak or walk for a few years before he finally died. One of the world's most comprehensively powerful men found himself trapped in a body which no longer functioned, able to watch and comprehend everything but unable to do anything at all.

  • @Onlymusical I know, wow, Karma is a major B-I-T-C-H isn't it? With Rose being such a spiritual person, I'm convinced she saw what he eventually became as God giving him earthly Purgatory for all the s-!t he put her and their children through (especially Rosemary, who he had lobotomized, and Jack, who he pretty much pushed into the presidency -and even though he was a great president, we all know how that ended) . Or at least, I hope she did. Because it obviously was.

  • @CorieFaulkner Yes, Dick Cavett once said on his show that he'd never heard a good word from anybody about Joe Kennedy, Sr.. It does seem like karma but I really think it was Rose subconsciously paying him back. If she'd called an ambulance immediately, he might've completely recovered, but she left him on the floor for a solid hour instead. By the time help reached him, it was all over and he could never say anything for the rest of his life except "No." Just "No no no no."

  • Gloria just never grew old in appearance or certainly in mind. She was always ahead of the time, a health food devotee decades before the movement started. Please note she gave the great Janis a run for her money in conversation. Janis' death and the death of her musical voyage was oh so unnecessary. On the road, many artists after a show, much less a fragile person such as Janis was known to be.

  • Dick Cavett was a nerdy, intellectual hottie.

  • Those not old enough to remember this kind of talk show don't realize what a tricky spot Cavett was in at 1:16. Today, the subject of oral sex would hardly raise an eyebrow--but then it was REALLY taboo. Even the spaced-out--and wonderful--Janis knew not to go any further. (She gives him a knowing tap on the arm).

Marvelous moment, captured in a world that was rapidly changing.

  • @BoElley You're joking, right?

  • @BoElley Oh honey, please search for Joplin here on youtube. You will not be sorry. Listen to her sing.

  • Priceless!! God, I love youtube. Janis J and Gloria S? Charlie Rose is such a bore; Dick Cavett, where are you? Come back to us!

  • she was GORGEOUS. And I love how she still seemed to be fashion from the 20s while in the 70s. That's one of the most stylish decades to me anyway!

  • Quite a comparison. Gloria Swanson, as always, with grace, poise, manners, and looking her best. And Janis Joplin looking as if she was just pulled off skid row.

  • what a great diction she has. Who talks like this anymore? Out comes crap when they open their mouths. Hollywood has become so crass in the days since...

  • @tolykozin Especially considering she started out in silent movies!

  • I like the sound of Gloria's voice! Strange though, cause it doesn't really match her face! Anyone agree?

  • gloria swanson reminds me so much of an aunt I have that I'm always uncomfortable around. they both seem like they enjoy themselves and people, but you're just not sure.

  • in the beginning they looked like they said to each other: ''oh, how do you do?"

  • Mr Cavett is wearing typically awful 1970s fashions.

  • Age doesn't change a smile.

  • Get up janis, a legend has just entered the room!

  • @Valapaca I was thinking the exact same thing.

  • @Valapaca i like your statement. Gloria should be respected and Janis should've stood up to greet Gloria.

  • @Valapaca I thought the same thing.

  • @Valapaca get up? she probably stoned or drunk!

  • @Valapaca ? janis is a legend too.a music legend as gloria is a movie legend.not nice not nice.

  • @Valapaca Absolutely.

  • @Valapaca She's not a queen, and they aren't in England. Speaking of England... Gloria Swanson was one of Joe Kennedy's lovers. On one of his hops across the pond, he had Gloria and his wife on the Queen Mary at the same time. or so a couple of bios say ;)

  • if anybody ever did a biopic of ms. swanson's life, it should be susan surrandon and her daughter eva amurri. they'd be perfect.

  • Cavettbiter I don't see it as her "bitching", she seemed a romantic who after five marriages is talking about her experiences in love. Too bad, she seemed like a wonderful woman and sun set boulevard does not do justice for her great looks, considered she was 70 or 71 in this clip. and I do not see the shiney forehead that is indicative of a face lift so I am assuming she lived well!

  • Wow Gloria Swanson sure had a great surgeon - she looked fantastic - but the most amazing thing about her are her eyes - just captivating and very blue. Sunset Blvd is in Black and White and of course all the silents were so it's great to see her in colour.

  • @Lovingsundays absolutely, she looked much younger than in 1950 the plastic surgery must have been occurred circa late 50's

  • She was 71. wow.

  • For a woman in her 70's she looks so young and natural compared to joan rivers, just shows you what healthy living can do.

  • They couldn't be more different but both fascinating women! Great together; I mean talk about fire and ice!

  • @3daysofpeacenmusic are you kidding me? yes janis joplin was one of the greatest singers of all time. but... gloria swanson was a legend. her kissing joplins feet? i think not

  • I THINK GLORIA IS A VERY CLASSY LADY !!! THATS BEFORE MOVIE STARS BECOME CHEAP SLUTS!!!!

  • I don't know much about Mrs Swanson, except for "Sunset Boulevard" and the fact that they used to call her "the bitch". I have to admit, if you look deeply into her eyes and face they do have something bitchy, don't you agree?

  • MIss Joplin should have rose in respect for an elder person when Miss Swanson entered.

  • @geyser Miss Swanson should've kissed Miss Joplin's feet in respect for being in the presence of one of the best singers of all time.

  • @irish89055 I never liked her singing either. I just like 'Piece of my hear' that one song only. Otherwise she was a terrible singer.

  • I got called a "silver tongued devil" once. I didn't know how to respond.

  • How cool is this? Read bios on both.

  • Janis Joplin and Gloria Swanson? Never thought I would see these geniuses together.

  • what an interesting mix of guests for one stage.

  • The modern equivalent of this would be Lady Gaga and Angela Lansbury or something similar...

  • @84ccipollini i'm thinking more like NOboDY and NOboDY.

  • @teflonmagnet

    I don't follow...

  • @84ccipollini ...Comparing Lady Gaga to Janis is a sacrilege. Seriously.

  • @panicxitsxbrea

No. Because they are on the same level of fame as janis was way back when .

It has nothing to do with the style they chose.

  • Is that janis joplin

  • her eyes are so pretty

    they always were

  • I can't believe she's 71. seeing a former silent star on a modern and bright talk show like this is a little bizarre.

  • I wanna look like her when I'm 71!!!

    Fab wig too!!!

  • im surprised when i saw sunset bulevard she was bitchi she is nice and smart

  • I love the fashion of the 60's & 70's....so over the top and costumelike.....if someone went on a talk show like that now, they'd be killed. :( being born in 1992 sucks, why couldn't I have been a child of the 70's? :(

  • @nickfvideoaddict For being born in 1992 you sound very bright. I appreciate that you appreciate outside your own era. You watch, one day someone will be saying, "why couldn't I have been a child of the '90s? :( "

  • What lovely ladies........gosh.

  • Janis Joplin died just two months after this interview. Eerie.

  • Dick cavett is said to be horse-hung. Are there any nude photos?

  • wow.what an incredible lady..

  • Oh, I really disagree with Ms. Swanson. Children don't have to kill the romance.

  • She's not blaming the third person.

  • Not only was she classy, but even at an older age notice how she has a very sweet, "young" voice. Close your eyes and she sounds the age of a woman not older than her late 20s.

  • She wanted to do his head.Gloria you naughty girl !!!!

  • Gloria Swanson was such an eloquent, beautiful, and classy lady. Love her.

  • Gloria Swanson was quite dishy, even in her old age, and rather classy. Very sharp lady.

  • We would like to GIVE head to Dick C because he is said to be horse-hung!

  • The size replies.. It hurts my eyes..

    To her surprise...

    To find out after all...

    It lives and dies....

  • I have such a low opinion of Dick Cavett. Such a poor interviewer. He kissed Katharine Hepburn's ass and other stars but when a lovely woman like Gloria Swanson comes on he treats her like crap. Very unprofessional. I've seen other interviews with him; he comes across to me as being arrogant and for some bizarre reason he thinks he is some kind of comedian.

  • he is an arsehole...whoever he is..not fit to lick her feet

  • Sadly Janis died two months later :(

  • Gloria was the very definition of CLASS.

  • Clearly Ms. Swanson was not amused by Janice Joplin. LOL.

  • tell me jay, how many actors you're aware of who have been nominated for an oscar 3 times but had "limited talent"? can YOU say oxymoron?

  • @jaysimmons82

In my opinion dear, you can't compare a singer to an actress (unless they are a triple threat). But comparing the two is quite silly. Gloria was a cinema queen and Joplin was a rock diva, got it!

  • I don't want to put words in the legend, Gloria Swansons mouth but, when she looks at JJ, I can't help but wonder what she is thinking...."what a trainwreck" comes to mine.

  • @tomcat28563 i agree with you lol. She must've thought who is this trainwreck and why is she sitting like a queen and calling me names.

  • WHat a lovely lady, the epitome of class. Really sharp too- seems her ideas and thoughts were never dated- perhaps because the twenties were so mad anyway!

Great lady, great actress. Stars of her character are in short supply now...if they even exist...

  • It's a shame that she wasn't allowed to play the mother's part in "Butterflies Are Free" when it became a film in 1972!!!

  • @koln1996 Yeah, but Eileen Heckart gave a fabulous performance!

  • What a great clip Janis and Ms. Swanson OMG I'm in Heaven!

  • Wow, I didn't realize what a nice lady she was. Far from some of the legends (i.e. Lauren Bacall, Katherine Hepburn) who really think/thought they're miles above everyone else.

  • One of the greatest actresses and very beautifull woman till her last days, who managed, as well as Marlene Dietrich, to look stunning at 70 just like at 20 or 30.

  • A great actress and a beautiful woman.Such a shame that so many people have no idea who she is or how what an accomplishment it was to make the transition from silent films to the talkies

  • fascinating... she was so sleek...We will never see the like of those ladies again.

  • Her role in "Sunset Boulevard" is probably one of the finest acting jobs to come out of Tinseltown. Awesome!

  • wow she was so grand

  • Gloria is one rare treat! A great Star from the Silent era that went into the "talkies" She also made a fun appearance on " the Beverly Hillbillies" She really was a true giant. Janis Joplin was a goos singer but showed lack of taste in this show. It's liek speaking to your mother or grand mother in that way. Just rude and not funny. Keep that humor for ppl your own age and not make a joke out of someone who is way older.

  • Its ironic that if Janis Joplin were still alive today - she would be around Gloria Swanson's age at the time of this interview (close to 70)

  • She was a wondeful Ladi Diva !

  • She looked pretty amazing for her age......she doesn't seem so plastic like todays older stars.

  • Ms. Swanson had beautiful skin and gorgeous legs. I know that she was something of a health fanatic--but with great results.

I think it's great to see three generations of people talking on stage here.

Janis' "head" comment was clearly understood by Cavett --but Ms. Swanson, although she gracefully ignored it, did too.

  • She's so pretty! I love the way she dresses! How gorgeous! Even at her age! Love her!
