i would disagree with the statement that a string quartet isn't theatrical. you can't be a robot and expect people to enjoy your performance; you have to be interacting and showing emotion with your face and connecting with not only your partners as well as the whole audience; most of them aren't smart enough to pick up on the nuances of what you're playing so you have to at least give them hints.
@mathal13 Cellists (like me) must sit when we play. Having the other three players sit too makes it easier to communicate and interact with each other while playing. Think of a string quartet as a conversation among four friends. The setting is intimate and comfortable (especially if you know your part!), not theatrical. :-)
