no, you dont need wires. USB gives out 5 volts. its enough to spin fans pretty fast ... but to max the speed of the fans you need 12 volts

I don't really see the point of this. The website says you can't even set a monitor on it due to weight restrictions. It's basically a $60 shelf with a USB hub. You could probably build one out of wood or buy one in a dollar store and buy a separate USB hub for less than $20-$30. I guess it at least looks pretty...
