After 1971 all the power motors were gone thanks to restricter plates. You didn't see the cobra jets the 454s the 426 hemis and so on where gone thanks to the government changing car restricter plates! So the general with a 440 from 69 verses a 77 405 or 455 whatever was in the bandit car would have gotten smoked! And if you don't believe me go look it up! That's why hemi cars are going for big

There is Ram air 3 and 4 only on 400 Block ...1973 is the 455 HO or SD if your lucky..i have a 1978 Trans Am 400 4 speed T10 Borg.its all stock and puts out 250HP only with headers ,im about to swap the heads from a 1969 GTO that will get it to above 350HP..

In reality the 77 Trans am "Bandit" was a dog when it came to power 400 didnt really have that muchI believe it was 180 to 200 . So depending on what engine the general lee had (dont know if it was ever said in the show) but even if it only had a 383 it would still take The Bandit and if it had a 440 or even the monster 426 it would EAT the Bandit .

@PontiacBandit the SD-455 engines were only offered back in the day on the 73 and 74 trans am model years not 78 and even then they were not as powerful (stock) as the 440 (375 hp) or 426 hemi (425 hp) that might have been on the charger back in 69. Yes the SD 455 was the most powerful engine in 73 and 74 (310 hp) but had it not been for strict federal emmission standards it would have been much higher. A stock 78 trans am like the bandit's was not as powerful as it looked.

However, in 1970, Pontiac's Trans Am was too fast and had to be de-tuned like you mentioned about the 455 in 73 and 74. The 1970 Trans Am had an optional package called the RAM AIR V, it was a Pontiac 400 ci and had (500bhp). Making it the fastest muscle car built. Then after that they started to de-tune the Trans Am in the later years so it could be more driveable.

And besides the 1970 Ram Air V Trans Am outputed 500bhp and it was a Pontiac 400ci. It was way more powerful than the Charger. Still, the Trans Am is on top. Now, you mentioned that if you put a kit in the Charger that it will be faster. Okay. No argument there. However, if you do the same to the Ram Air V Trans Am, it will surpass it and still over take Charger.

@chevyman815 A stock 440 Charger would never out perform a stock 400 T/A overall. In straightaway racing the Charger would have a slight advantage but in handling the T/A would totally dominate. The General Lee as well as the Bandit were not stock. From what I remember both of these cars had around 400 HP and both used nitrous for certain jumps. The '78 Bandit was a beast.

That is why is the late seventies and early eighties the trans am was king. Not to mention the 73-74 455 Super Duty engine built with nascar components had to be tuned down a bit to satisfy emissions but that engine would rape any HEMI.

Great video, I am a T/A guy myself and I was rooting for the Bandit. Knowing full well and good that a '69 440 hemi or even a '69 383 would stomp a 400 or 403 '77 T/A.. The poor cars in the late '70s was so choked down due to emissions that they only produced around 200 hp. From what I understand from the S&B movie notes I read. Some of the cars had 455's in them w/ 4-speeds. The one that did the bridge jump had this combo. BTW still cringing about all the rock chips that had to come from this.
