I have a suggestion if I may Nancy, tell your students to pull the raffia through 'gently' that way there'll be less 'breaking'..
Also if they're having a hard time pulling the needle through, tell them to use a rubber band. They put the rubber band around the needle, and pull. That way they aren't yanking the needle through.
The only thing better than that are Pamela Zimmerman's 'needle grabbers'.
