No doubt Well Chief is one of the best 2m chasers never to win the Champion Chase. With this performance he would have won most renewal's of the race, he was just unlucky to come up against one of the greatest 2m chasers in Moscow Flyer. Unfortunately, after the 2004/2005 season injury pretty much ruined his career. I'm still convinced Moscow Flyer, Azertyuiop & Well Chief are the best three 2m chasers I've seen in the last 20 years.

@Beccalcf Ran in Point to points in Ireland a string of 2nds but nothing special. Only a half brother to Moscow :) I would imagine he fetched a price at sometime or other as looks to be well bred.

Well Chief hasn't won a grade 1 chase since 2004 because his career has been plagued by injuries. This is a horse that as a 6yo carried top weight in the Victor Chandler Handicap Chase off a rating of 176, giving 20lbs and a beating to Thisthatandtother who by the way went on to win the Ryanair Chase that season. That was a superb weight carrying perfromance, every bit as good as the one Denman put up in the Hennessy earlier this season. Without doubt at his best Well Chief was a great horse.

Plain and simple, the only horse that can beat Master Minded this year is Well Chief, forget Big Zeb, that will be found out soon enough, at the top of his game i am positive that Well Chief can beat Master Minded, off for over 2 years and only beat 7 lengths and they obviously rode him, for just that, 2nd place, just hope the horse made of glass can finally prove he is no nearly horse, heres to hoping, come on Well Chief!!!

well it looks like well chief has had his day,,,,, TWIST MAGIC was majastic in the tingle creek and he will be master minded biggest fow at cheltham this year.. never seen a horse win a tingle creek like twist magic did..... c'om the nicholls YARD

For me Twist Magic is only Twist Magic at Sandown, if the Champion Chase was held there then maybe he would be the bifggest threat to MM but he clearly just isn't the same anywhere else, his Cheltenham record reads F6F and he was beaten 52l when he actually managed to complete not the most compounding of cases for him to beat MM is it, i have nothing against Twist Magic, he just only seems to turn it on at Sandown!!

@18LiveForever erm. is i can remember rightly in a Group 1 race at Sandown Twist Magic fell when leading in 2008 and i cant remenber who won it. I dont think he LOVES Sandown. I think its a bit like Monet's Garden and Aintree today didnt do very well at all but they all have off days. just like the great Kauto Star

I have no problem with Master Minded, he's clearly a chaser of the highest class. However, I've read people saying that he's in a different league to Moscow Flyer, Azertyuiop & Well Chief - and that stuns me. If you took those three horses at their best and put them up against today's 2m division they would be just as impressive & dominant as MM has been IMO. I mean Well Chief was off the track for 2 years and still beat the rest into second in this years Champion Chase!

Mater Minded is so good because he has no other horses of quality to take him on, up against Moscow Flyer and Azertyuiop he might still well win but he would not look half as classy. I never rated Well Chief when he won the Arkle but he did prove to be a classy horse after that !! I miss Well Chief he was lovely little horse.

We will never know how good moscow truely was for the simple reason he never extended when he hit the front..... Well Chief or a Donkey he would win usually by about 2 lengths. A racing mystery that we will never know. Fact no one can dispute was he beat all that was put in front of him.

master minded will go down as one of if not the highest rated chaser of all time.i loved the flyer, but think master minded would of beat him. beating voy por ustedes out of sight is far more impressive than beating well chief 3 lengths. long live the flyer though. i had £80 on him to win the tingle creek that season and when he won that i put the winning on him for the champion chase. a real hero

Get a grip you clown. Master Minded is beating absolutely nothing, Moscow Flyer beat genuine top class TWO MILE chasers. Name a genuine champion Master Minded has beaten? ... He couldn't even see out 2m4f at Aintree.

Just like he did with Azertyiuop, Moscow Flyer would put yet another Nicholls hype horse (Master Minded) in his place were he in his prime.

And as NLM1980 says, to win a Champion Chase at 11yrs old beating Well Chief and Azertyiuop... Best performance of the past 20 years.

I think it is harder to win a champion chase at 11 years old rather than 5. Master Minded also had tons of previous of experience in France, chasers usually peak around 8 or 9 and are known to go on the downgrade from 10 onwards, so I think Moscows win at 11yrs old against GENUINE top class animals is far better than anything the Nicholls horse will ever achieve....
